Heroes Honored

  • Also honored Tuesday at a City Hall ceremony were Police Sgt. Jason Kaczynski and Officer Kimberly Thorp. They received the Carter Harrison Award.

The two officers, who were on desk duty and not wearing bulletproof vests, stepped into the line of fire in July 2010 when they heard gun shots outside a police station.

Thorp was met with a spray of bullets as she exited the doorway. She took aim at a gun-wielding man advancing toward her. Kaczynski was close behind with his weapon drawn, and fired several shots striking the gunman in the chest.

At the time, neither knew that Officer Thor Soderberg had been mortally wounded in the parking lot moments before they arrived on the scene.

Congratulations Officers.

Good Work Guys...

Rest in Peace Thor..

Off Topic... Posted as a comment on Sun-Times Story about Reins in the Gay Pride Parade.

(Had to modify the word "hell")

Leave it to the Sun-Times to overlook a very important point why the mayor wants to downsize this parade.

He and his predecessor Richie Daley have been downsizing the Chicago Police Department for years through attrition. There has been 400-600 retirement a year but barely half as many hires for a lot of years now. At this rate when this parade rolls around again we will be lucky to have a 9000 man department and this will be after the G-8 and NATO debacles. According to sources, which the Sun-Times should check out, we will have no mutual aid for G-8 and NATO. The CPD and the citizens of Chicago will be on their own facing hordes of mostly out-of-town “protestors’ who will be coming here just to raise hell.

If you want this parade, if you work or own a business downtown or anywhere in Chicago and want to do so in peace get on your Aldermen to HIRE MORE POLICE.

Two great choices and even two greater people, the type that will never boast or brag about it. The awards committee finally got it correct after they cheapened the award by giving it to AW for political purposes.

President of Sgt's association put Kaczynski, thorpe and Casey in for Top Cop award and they were awarded in May in D.C. during police week. The department was mad at P.O. Casey and Lt. MB in supt's office got a CR# on Sgt's Association President. Department then sent out admin message (111261) stating only award committee can approve other agencies awards. Well they finally got one right.
Congrats Jason and Kim.

Soon, even CPD heroes will have to record their own actions for closer scrutiny by experts, and lawyers! Read about what is beginning to happen around the country:
The Christian Science Monitor - CSMonitor.com
"Questions abound after fatal shooting is captured by cops' own camera"

"A camera on the chest of an Oakland, Calif., police officer recorded the officer's fatal encounter with a suspect. The incident highlights the rising use of police chest-cams – and the legal and ethical questions surrounding them."

Great job Jason and Kim. They ran in when others hid behind cars and in stairwells. They saved a P.O's life when she froze up while being shot at. The down side to the story is that when their unit was disbanded these heroes were not even considered for an "Area Team" by their commander or Lts. Instead they took care of the inside admin people and sent Jason and Kim back to the watch.

Let's see, stolen car offender or police officer murderer, hmmm, the right officers got the award. The alderman can scream at the supervisors in 024 who perhaps failed to put the 024 officer in for an award. They only give out a limited amount of these things but there are other awards worthy of honor.

They aren't automatic, the supervisors must write it up and then a commander has to follow the thing through the awards committee.

Rahm and McNutty would like to civilianize the desk and lockup. Do you think those civilians would've ran to the sound of gunfire??
Regardless of what Rahm and McNutty think there still is a need for sworn personell working district desks and lockups. I hope the FOP stands strong on this point.
Chicago Police stations, unlike most suburban stations, are anything but secure. Besides not being secure they're a magnet for the homeless and the nuts. There have been several arrests of crazies right at our desk. How would that work out without sworn personell working the desks?
This was truly a tragic situation but it's good to know that even though these 2 officers were "housecats" that day they did what was required of them. Awesome job officers!

Hey jackass Hey didn't say put them in for the Lambert Tree. He simply stated that they didn't even get an honorable mention. You know sometimes a simple award(piece of paper) might boost a little morale. Anyway I saw the chase and tackle on the news. Great form tackle lol and see us mean cops didn't even beat the poor criminal(so no brutality beef ha ha). Good job officer and well worth at least an honorable mention.

How can he have an opinion on the supervisors when he hasn't had any contact with the majority of them. As much as I hate Jody within a month of his appointment I had seen him in our station for roll call and speaking with the W/C for a period of time. Also saw him out on the street with his driver. haven't seen this guy out there at all. As far as his evaluating the lt and capt. he didn't even consider the ones without the clouted reference for the position of commander so most likely the best ones out there have not even crossed his radar. Only when he gets out into the districts and speaks with the non meritorious will he see the talent that exists on our department. Howvever the clouted will never allow that to ocurr because it will show them up for the incompetent boobs that they really are.
