The Most Dangerous Cities

Coming in at #3....wait a minute....is this right? Springfield, Illinois? What the hell:
  • The capital city of Illinois, Springfield ranks third on our list because it had 855 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2010. The city also confounds analysts who try to interpret its relatively high crime rate. The unemployment rate was lower than the national average at 7% as of July, so the economy wouldn’t seem to play a major role in crime. And although meth usage saw a small spike in the mid-2000s, a law passed a few years ago making the necessary pharmaceutical ingredients harder to buy seems to have cut down on abuse. There are also poorer neighborhoods – literally on the other side of the railroad tracks – that tend to have higher rates of poverty and the higher rates of crime that accompany that, which contributes to the city’s overall higher rate of crime. Another factor could be Springfield’s relatively young population – 66% of the city is under the age of 44 – and relatively younger populations are historically correlated with higher rates of crime.
The other cities in the top 5 are:
  • #5 - Anchorage, Alaska
  • #4 - Flint, Michigan
  • #2 - Memphis, Tennessee
  • #1 - everyone's favorite - Detroit, Michigan
Rockford came in at #10. And Chicago?

Chicago doesn't appear to be in the FBI's statistical table that Forbes magazine used to determine the "most dangerous" cities. Maybe we're missing it. Or maybe Chicago doesn't keep statistics that the FBI can trust to actually determine crime rates.

You can't be noticed if the blanket is pulled firmly over your head, right?

For most of my career, we've been told the FBI refuses to accept the way Chicago compiles its 'statistics' and we aren't included in any of its tables of reckoning.

Perverse, isn't it?

Read the comments associated with Memphis. The city instituted a program called " Blue Crush" which closely follows the FBI guidelines for reporting crime. They are saying that Blue Crush resulted in reporting many crimes that other cities are missing, crimes that are ging unreported to the FBI and this resulted in a higher ranking for Memphis. They emphasis that crime actually has not increased in that city. Chicago should follow the same format. These ratings onloy show what is actually being reported by the department, not what is actually occuring.

springfield is a rough town. Reyn aldo snipes came from springfield. The first light beer ever made in america was test marketed in springfield, forty years ago. In springfield, even today, if you got a problem with someone, you work it out on the bricks. Why do you think they hold en banc hearings there? The streets of springfield have street cred.

It's tough to be in business in Illinois. Due to the lack of concealed carry in Illinois I don't know who I fear more the criminal element or those we elect in Springfield.

Here's a popular explanation as to why Chicago is routinely left out of these types of lists. From Wikipedia (I know, take it or leave it):

"Because the Chicago Police Department tallies data differently than police in other cities, the FBI often does not accept its crime statistics. Chicago police officers record all criminal sexual assaults, as opposed to only rape. They count aggravated battery together with the standard category of aggravated assault. As a result, Chicago is often omitted from studies such as Morgan Quitno's annual 'Safest/Most Dangerous City' survey, which relies on FBI-collected data."

Forget the crime rates folks. Keep your eyes open and listen up. In your house, going outside to walk the dog...go to the store...go to work...or whatever. Sleeping? Keep that Glock nearby. Look over your shoulder and alwys be aware the bad guys are lurking.

The Feebs do not use chicago statistics. At least they did not when I was on the job. They do not trust CPD and anyone with an ounce of brains would not trust the Feebs.

SCC you're right, CPD doesn't submit the REQUIRED Correct crime classifications to the FBI. That will change soon.
