Mark Brown Again

  • Thanks to the magic of YouTube, it’s a fairly simple matter to go back and take a second look at the speech last January where mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel unveiled his crime platform.

His campaign posted the video at the time, along with this caption: “Rahm Emanuel introduces his crime plan to put 1,000 more cops on our streets and expand after-school programs to keep kids off them.”

If you listen for a few minutes, you can hear Emanuel make this pledge:

“Earlier in this campaign, I proposed using $25 million in TIF funds, unused monies, to put an additional 250 police officers on the streets of our most violent communities. But frankly, 250 more police is not enough. Chicago must do better. Chicago can do better.

“As mayor, I will put 1,000 additional police on the streets working closely with Chicago residents to fight the guns, to fight the gangs and to fight the drugs that now pervade.”

Over the final weeks on the campaign trail, the promise to put “1,000 more police on the streets” became part of Emanuel’s talking point mantra that was drilled into us through daily repetition.

And so it was with some amusement that I heard Police Supt. Garry McCarthy tell the Sun-Times editorial board Friday that he’d never heard the mayor say anything about putting police on the “streets” when he’s been present.

“I heard him say districts. I heard him say beats,” said McCarthy, who of course didn’t get here until after the election.
Ah, McTool. Playing Rahm's numbers game. And the semantics game. And any other game the Machine wants you to dance to, credibility among the rank-and-file be damned.

Hunker down people, rough sailing ahead.

NOW is the time for the unions to start a massive PR campaign and keep it up until contract negotiations begin or shortly afterward.

The unions need to do the same thing as the city is doing; flood the media with the CORRECT info about what is going on in the city.
Flood the media about the city's true finances.

I am not a hair gel tact guy and yes I am lucky to have a spot, so by no means am I complaining just giving my humble opinion. Last week we were told no outside vest covers and to remove everything from our belts let alone having a duty rig period. We were told to cover our vests with another garment in attempt to look less like the police.
Now this is all fine and dandy, but do these fucks running this dept into the ground really think that the bangers dont know that the 2 or 3 white guys jumping out of a god damn unmarked squad car aren't the police!
NYPD has the resources, vehicles etc.. to make that unit operate under the radar and not look like the police, we are lucky to have a functioining pdt let alone a covert vehicle.
I'll end my rant and let all the tact haters comment now, but the other issue is officer safety. What happens during the first foot pursuit when a copper shoots at, or god forbid hits another copper mistakenly took for a bad guy when he is running with his weapon drawn? Does the Sup know we just gave every banger the tool to say I didn't know they were the police after we are battered or shot at?

Wait...these ARE the CTA paid hires to REPLACE special employment! 50 recruits hit the street and 50 spots will open in Public Transportation. NO increase on the street.

10/02/2011 11:24:00 AM

Wait a little more. Take those 50 officers, make them full time, and add the furlough, rdo's, bfd's,personal days (don't mention anyone being on the medical) those officers can take and you have a net loss of about 30 officers!

You read that right. Make those 50 officers full time, instead of officers working their day off. You get a net DECREASE in manpower on the order of 30 officers a day. Ask Rahm or McPuppet THAT Mr. Media.

Chicago has more murders, more agg batts, and more robberies. McCarty is a blowhard and a bull

Chicago has more murders and violent crime but also has more ghettos than new york. In new york ghettos are violent but smaller areas not like in chicago. the entire south, east and west sides are trash. In new york there are not sprawling areas for over 20 miles of just constant ghetto like in chicago.

Im not a troll but you have to look at the response any politician is going to give you and that is the first one... The number of officers is comparable to the size of new york police department because of the difference in population and how large new york city is.

Size of New york: 498 square miles

Size of chicago: 227 square miles

population density new york:28,000 people per square mile

Population density chicago: 11,500 per square mile.

New York population: about 8.2 million

Chicago population: about 2.695 million

That means in new york there are about 245 residents for each police officer.

In chicago that number is about 277 residents for each police officer...

Thus, chicago has a proper sized police force compared to new york city.

Now Rahm orders McCarthy to put the police office workers in the field , back in a beat car and everyone's complaining .

Rahm has to remove some of the exempts in command of less than 100police officers . Those units could by supervised by a sgt. or lt. Captains should only be assigned to areas or the busiest districts like 7,8,9,10,11,14 &15 .

Don't you think that it would actually increase the amount of light duty officers then?
Also, in case you've forgotten.. or perhaps never knew, district desk spots are bidded spots by seniority. This is clearly spelled out in the contract.

Is McGruff actually Charlie McCarthy? I noticed everytime McGruff is with Racoon Eyes the mayor has him sitting on his lap with his hand in his back. I even saw Rahm's lips move a little.

My car has 105,000 miles on it, no A/C, no computer and the paint job is so bad it is barely recognizable as a CPD squad car.

I can remember not all that long ago that cop cars had no A/C at all in many places. The reason - they wanted the cops to have their windows open so they could hear what was going on around them better.

And, I suppose cop cars also had no heat, because we might be tempted to close those car windows and keep the heat inside during the winters?

You bought the official b.s. hook, line and sinker. Emperor Daley the First just didn't want to PAY EXTRA for air conditioning in the squad cars.
