Oh No!

  • Moo and Oink, the chain of iconic Chicago meat stores, is in bankruptcy and has shut its doors after 150 years.

There were two stores on the South Side, one on the West Side and another in south suburban Hazel Crest. The stores employed about 200 people.

A lawyer for Moo and Oink's largest creditor says it wants to take over the assets and sell them, but a group of investors hopes to buy the company and re-open the stores.

We remember a lot of the old timers having some crazy story about this, that or the other thing, centered around the "Moo & Oink." It's like the end of an era.

Those old places are dropping away, at least they had some character, a real flavor of the city. I wonder if there sometimes was some mystery meat mixed in with the ground pork sausage, sort of like Satriales on The Sopranos.

Does anyone know if there is still a Shine King at Madison & Pulaski? Or Elmo's Tombstone Service at 60th & State. "Before you go, see Elmo" Gravestones while you wait was their specialty.

Used to enjoy the 'smooth jazz' of WNUA, UNTIL the annoying, and intrusive m-m-m-moo and oyyyynk shriek, signaling their commercials, destroyed the mood. Mmmooooood.

Yep all those post offices will be closing soon too... mass layoffs,

Not to mention...heh..where's Governor Quinn going to get $150 million dollars for a Chicago Board of Options Exchange tax breaks to match that offer (see link below)

What's he going to do raise the state income tax again? More of the tax base leaving and digging the hole deeper.

The best one I remember is the 300 plus female shoplifter at the Moo & Oink on Madison. As she tried to exit the store a 20 pound ham fell out from between her legs. She looked up and said "Who threw that ham"

Mary "SunTimes" Mitchell is in a deep funk over this. I hope she recorded those commercials that she loved to dance to at home when she was loaded. So long Moo and Oink. 150 years is a pretty good run.

Man,

like the Magikist sings on the expressways Moo and Oink is an institution.

Sometimes it sucks to live in what was then the future.

I have seen the enemy and it is not nearly as tasty as pork products.

Moo and Oink going the way of "Buddy Bear." Remember "People who care, shop Buddy Bear." They were a west side chain of about 3 stores. The Italian owners got in some crap and they closed.

Yes, my friends, there was a lot of "mystery meat" sold at their stores. The labels on the packages should have been " Ground Meat " not beef or pork. Truth in advertising ? ? ?

WRT: Elmo's Tombstones Made While You Wait: 20 years ago the then-current owner of Elmo's sold t-shirts with that "Before You Go" slogan...

I hate to hear of pretty much any business closing, especially in this economy.

I wonder though how this is possible, with the cry of "food desert" being heard in these areas. You'd think Moo & Oink had a monopoly in this market.

There was no excuse back in the day to have unshined shoes working in 015. Shine King was the best.

I took a recruit there in '86, the look on his face was priceless when the lighter fluid went on his brand new boots and was lit to melt the shoe wax for a better shine

Thanks for bringing back the memory.

Wal Mart is just the new version of Alco's that was at 35th and King Dr. in 002..open 24 hours a day, EVERY DAY, and you could count on handling a few jobs there during each tour. One of a kind!
