Shooting in Rockford
An off-duty deputy shot and killed a 16-year-old and critically injured three others during a robbery at a Rockford pizzeria.
The deputy involved in the Saturday night shooting is a 29-year-old U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq, according to Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers. Meyers did not identify the deputy, who was put on paid administrative leave.
The deputy was talking with a friend at the restaurant when the suspects entered the business, acccording to Rockford Police Chief Chet Epperson.One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the deputy and his friend. A struggle ensued and the deputy used an employee's handgun to shoot the suspects.
The 16-year-old died at the scene. Epperson says the other three suspects were treated for life-threatening injuries.

employee was not injured and the

A perfect example of why CCW should be passed in Illinois. The thugs always carry, it's about time the rest of the citzenry who work hard, pay their bills, pay their taxes and contribute to society are allowed an equal means of self-defense against armed thugs.

I am from Rockford, and was going to submit this story to your blog when I had a chance. Im pleasently suprised that it is already on here.
Rockford, although significantly smaller than Chicago, has seen an uproar of violence, robberies, and burglaries this year. I have lived here my whole life and the crime this year is astonishing. I live downtown and have never felt threatened, but just recently a 17 year old on a bicycle robbed a woman at gunpoint at 1pm on a weekday just around the corner from me. Broad daylight.
These kids need to learn that they cannot just run into places and take their things. What did the pizza place honestly have on them? Maybe $250? To split between 4 kids? 1 of your friends is dead and you are all critically wounded for $60. What a sad life you must live.
Teach these dumb fucks a leasson. Maybe somewhere, some kid will think twice about running into an establishment with a gun. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT POLICE WORK AN OFF-DUTY DEPUTY. I wish I could find the man and personally thank him for his efforts.
Deputy, we know you saved at least two lives by your actions. You may have saved many, many more by precluding any future criminal activity by these felons.

Two years ago I went to the Riverfest in Rockford and recall seeing a contingent of shit birds running down the street afterward. There were housing projects across the street from the festival, but the fest had heavy security. I was in an Irish bar two blocks from the venue when I saw the shit heads fleeing. Rockford has had problems with gang bangers for quite some time.

Not true. State law forbids concealed carry for law abiding citizens. A county cannot supersede state law. But keep your fingers crossed, cause hopefully the winds of liberalism will blow away from this corrupt state and sanity will return and we will get concealed carry one day soon.

Sheriff Meyers of Winnebago County (IL) is very good at backing his deputies. His is up from the ranks and I don't think the deputy will have an administrative problem. Carrying a weapon off duty is optional for them and in this case would've been a good idea. The restaurant manager has a FOID card for his weapon and hopefully will be OK with the State's Attorney. Chief Epperson of Rockford PD, who is handling the investigation, is also OK. The State's Attorney is new and could go sideways but I hope not. The comments in the local media have generally been supportive of the deputy.
Like that 4 and 2? Now that we've had a taste of it, it is the first thing on the chopping block come contract negotiations.
Second thing? Rotating! No more shift differential. This is going to be rough.

If an employee has a foid card and permission from the property owner, he can carry a firearm, concealed or otherwise. He cannot carry it in public, though.

He is an Veteran from Iraq God only knows what he saw or did over their, then too encounter this? Only God know what mental stress he is dealing with over this situation, to take a life is not easy let alone critically wounding three others not knowing will they live or die. Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato announced during a news conference Tuesday that Brandon Sago, 22; Desmond Bellmon, 23; Lamar Coates, 23; all of Rockford, have been charged with eight counts of first degree murder, or felony murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, and three counts of attempted armed robbery.
At least they will be in court for a while before Quinn pardons them, One however got the death sentence over Quinn's veto....
