Wave a Flag?

Honest to god, who thinks up this crap? And get's paid for it. And probably gets some sort of kickback:
  • The City of Chicago is hoping to improve pedestrian safety at certain unprotected street crossings with brightly-colored flags that people can use to be sure cars know they are there.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, the flags are in what basically amount to buckets hanging from streetlight poles on either side of the street.

Pedestrians can take one of the several orange flags from a bucket, and wave it as they make their way across the street. At that point, the flags are placed in the identical bucket on the other side of the crossing.

We almost drove off the road laughing when we heard this one. And the first intersection to have flags in the bucket? 64th and Western.

We give the buckets about a week before they're gone. The flags won't last a day.

This makes me so sad. It's a good idea -- one that would have worked in a monocultural society about 100 years ago, back when a social contract existed.

You're right -- the elderly person who could use one of these flags won't find one there.

At first blush, it does seem odd, and even though the flags and the buckets will most probably not last very long before they are reappropriated, having handled a gruesome fatal pedestrian accident, I applaud any effort towards helping pedestrians stay safe. Besides, the flags will be great for catching a cab and might attract more attention than yelling, "POE-LEECE!".

VTF, Vanecko Taxpayer Fleecers, takes pride in their products! How much do the flags cost the city, you ask? $25 per flag. Wuh? Why so surprised? Hey, I got's to make a living! Besides, the old paint buckets are a deal at only $10 each or $25 for three. VTF Company is looking out for dem pedestrian voters.

The Berkeley, CA City Council unanimously agreed to spend $3,000 on a pilot project to place brightly colored flags on both sides of a small number of Berkeley crosswalks for about $250 per intersection. The flags are likely to be stolen, they could be cheaply replaced at about a dollar each and that thefts should decrease over time. The city will attempt to get some of the costs subsidized by offering merchants a chance to advertise on the quivers or by seeking sponsorship of specific crosswalks by neighborhood organizations.

In Salt Lake City 44 crosswalks were equipped with bright orange flags measuring 18 inches by 18 inches, similar to those used by road crews. The sticks are about a yard long. They do get stolen and are replaced at a cost of $1.65 for the plain type and $2.65 for the reflectorized ones. Intersections are sponsored by businesses, schools or neighborhood groups, who take responsibility for maintaining and replacing the flags.

Cambridge, MA installed flags at two crosswalks in 1999, and has kept them at one. Flags installed at a busy crosswalk on a major arterial road were abandoned because they kept getting stolen and because no one was using them. Other measures -- such as raised crosswalks, barrels in the middle of the street and curb extensions or "bulb-outs" -- seem to be more effective.

In my opinion the creation of official crosswalks at random non-intersection points is one of the most cockamamie laws ever enacted. And I say this as a pedestrian. It is counter-intuitive and takes all the focus off compliance with the yield laws and signals at lights and stop signs. This flag nonsense only serves to highlight that obvious fact. They ought to repeal that law ASAP and re-focus enforcement on laws that actually make sense.

How about putting rifles and shotguns in strategic locations (like anywhere in the 7th district)...so that the indigenous can protect themselves.

If they place them near the cameras, no one will mess with them, except for legitimate self defense purposes. If a weapon happens to get stolen, it'll probably go to Mexico. No worries.

When do I get promoted?

It strikes me that they could very well be doing this in Japan today, where it would work fine. Is that where the idea came from?

People there bundle up their newspapers for recycling, and the man who picks them up gives a package of recycled toilet paper in exchange.

Brilliant idea..

The city can turn this into yet another revenue generation program.

$150 dollar tick$ets can be issued for crossing the street without a flag!

Then after the foot is in the door we- can continue the political re-education programs and expand the flag program to where you MUST carry two flags, one in each hand whenever you are outdoors.

See if you are holding flags you can't hold a gun! To top it off just think about all the people we can ticket generating city revenue when they are caught out side with a flag.

Hey..yeah I know..I know..however it's FOR THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN..don't you know haha...and if it saves just one live then isn't it worth it?

Better yet why don't they make the buckets more useful in the ghetto since there is no BAFFROOMS...use them orange flags for toilet paper too...

Also some other suggestions to leave out on the street:

-Bags of free Cheetos and Big Orange popsicles

-Some Apple Iphones since that seems to be what they want when they take them from people on the "EL"

-Link Cards (for the street gamblers to use when their monies run out)

023rd Citizen @ 12/10/2011
07:56:00 PM...

Do you hear that sound?

That is the sound of you, your neighbors and your family members feeling very much alone and left to fend for yourselves.

Rahm doesn't give two flamin' hot shits about annyone who isn't a North Shore or Gold Coast millionaire.

Pay attention to the people applauding Rahm "taking it to those Cops," stripping honest, hard working middle-class taxpayers of Police protection and doing his best to drive a wedge between The Police & the taxpayer. (while ignoring the fact that Policemen ARE taxpayers)

We're going to tell you something that will blow your mind 023rd Citizen... Your fate, safety and well being are inextricably intertwined with the state of CPD.

As CPD goes, so goes the city and all that it implies.

The smartest mayor and police executive ever in the annals of municipal governance have a plan, just ask them.

The recent spate of the toilet overflowing in 023 is nothing...

You people are about to witness first hand Rahm's promise of you paying for everything, getting nothing and being glad of it.

YOU ALLOWED THIS TO COME TO PASS!

Rahm is catering to his noisy, riotously fecund, democratic voting constituency.

Just wait until your doors get kicked off the hinges when Dude & Co. comes in, puts a gun to your head and tells you he's going to
crash in and sell dope out of YOUR house.

Makes you want to scream for help already, doesn't it?

Go ahead... Scream... There is no help coming for you or The Policeman in the field.

Everybody in Chicago is a dead man walking except those who have gamed and manipulated every rule and safeguard to enrich themselves.

Do you people think that the legacy criminal-political cabal of millionaires at the Chicago City Club who applauded McMouth getting in a shot against Mike Shields, are actually INTERESTED in seeing "good money" spent on hiring enough Police to protect YOU?

Rahm promised them something at the expense of everyone's safety.

The intentional destruction through attrition of CPD ensures that the toilet will overflow city-wide.

The Police didn't break "it"...

"It" has decayed way beyond the ability of The Police to fix "it."

A whole bunch of people who have NEVER had to fight for or defend a damned thing in their lives are going to find out what it's like to go up against the devils that stride 023 and other parts of this city like natural men...

Maybe you develop an appreciation for why Policemen think and react the way they do...

Some of you might even have the joy and pleasure of having the same nightmares Policemen have by the time this is over and done.

In La Grange that was not a random pick of the nanny.
Those offenders know the renters of that apartment and were looking for something specific.

I couldn't have said it better myself! To all of you who eagerly "drank the kool-aid" and obediently voted for Rahm just like the media told you to, you are getting what you deserve. You voted for a liar who thinks all you non-millionaires are expendable trash, and now, you are being treated like trash, trash that doesn't deserve police service. I trust you are all still happy with the vote you cast for Rahm, because I don't see an angry crowd occupying City Hall demanding his resignation!

Am I wrong? I thought stop signs and red lights with WALK and DON't WALK were supposed to do this.

This has been done for years now in various parts of Northern California. It sounds totally goofy, but this isn't some strange idea that Chicago made up.

Northern California, land of yuppies and tree huggers are a far cry from the "citizens" of 64th and Western. The buckets will be stolen after a day and the flags will be used as weapons for the daily after-school mayhem. Mark my words, some kid will get maimed by a flag and momma will immediately get the scum-bag lawyer for the ghetto lottery lawsuit. Socialist /commie Channel 5 will be there on the spot along with a Trib reporter ready to blast the city for their negligence and praising the honor student.

just sayin

023 dist citizens can thank Obama, Quinn, Daley and Rahm. No one thinks the police are needed...no wants the police to do their job...no one backs us up....even many of the citizens.....until they need a cop and then we are OK for that moment...as long as we do what "they" say and tell us "how it should be done"....we are few and far between and our hands are tied.

023 Uptown has always been a shithole, " one flew over the cukoo's nest" place, full of addicts, thieves, demented.

Condo's were sold to newcomers to Chicago as Lakeview North.

As a resident of 023, why is our community so crime ridden? In 2003 when I bought my condo things were not this bad. What happened? What can citizens who live in the community do to make it better?

Why did you move into an area, without doing your homework first? Did you talk to locals? Did you observe the area, before you moved in? Have you read many online articles, before moving in?

Ped safety? How about teaching the assholes to look both ways before crossing the street and not stepping out into moving traffic while drunk!!!

I look both ways, don't step into moving traffic and never drink. :)

How about teaching the (drunk?) drivers to stop? :)
