Welcome Mentally Ill Patrons!

Again, how about a locked, secure door with a doorbell, closed circuit TV and inch thick glass. In numerous suburbs, this guy wouldn't even get in the front door. But here?
  • A Northwest Side man was charged early this morning with heaving chunks of concrete at a large plate glass window at the 16th District police station in Jefferson Park Thursday night.

Three officers were injured when they tried to arrest the 38-year-old man, Chicago Police News Affairs [...] said.

Andrzej K. Borowiec, of the 5300 block of West Wolfram Street was charged with three counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of criminal damage to property and one count of misdemeanor resisting arrest. He was ordered held in lieu of $200,000 bail following a hearing today in Cook County Central Bond Court.

Mentally ill people wandering into police stations with rifles, destroying equipment, getting tasered 30 times, and now, bringing concrete into the station to inflict mayhem.

But everything is fine.

Let's get those civilians behind the police desk before another copper gets hurt. Maybe that fire captain could help out too.

Don't forget to mention that one of our citizenship-challenged female custodians here in 011 boosted a 1/W copper's iPhone out of the men's locker room last night. Victim PO was able to track phone via GPS to her residence in 004. She opened the door to return the phone but "refused to come out to be arrested" (another testament to how college/hairgel fucked this job up beyond repair...but this is a topic for another time). She was processed when she showed up for work in the morning, then had the nerve to bitch about not being read Miranda in Spanish (she WAS, I was there when they were read to her). Moral of this heartwarming holiday story???? What else have these bastards lifted from the station? Out checks, personal identifiers, interdepartmental mail, WEAPONS have the potential to be swiped. If mentals and others hellbent on causing chaos wasn't enough, we now have to keep a more scrutinous eye (as we always should've been) on the hired help. It'll be interesting to see if this broad has a criminal history. Speaking of which???? Anyone know whatever came of our other custodian that was arrested for ties to some terrorist group?????

True about suburban police stations. You get into a small waiting area with bullet proof glass protecting the officer on duty. Only when they consider you safe and on official business will you get any furthur.

Of course, McNutball and the police hating Mayor only want one armed officer in the stations now.

What can possibly go wrong with that idiotic plan?

Hope everyone is OK up there in 016.

Did you any Boss in any of your districts or other facilities do a walkabout outside and see what could go wrong here?

Did they or you look for loose and broken concrete curbs, garbage on the streets and overgrown weeds in empty lots around the stations?

Did they keep an eye on nearby buildings for hazards, and know about auto or motorcycle thieves living on the next block from the station.

Did they or you look for anything that might be picked up and used as a weapon, smash our car windows or one of those huge plate glass windows?

More importantly, did they or you do anything about it? We did to the point of pulling over Streets & San and Sheriff's S.W.A.P. crews to help clear away the hazards.

Things are better than they use to be since our station opened; at least now if someone wants to throw a rock at us they have to bring it with them.

I hope the powers that be are paying attention and rethink their silly idea of one P.O. and a couple civilians working the desk. More and more these unsecured desk/lobby areas are becoming catastrophes just waiting to happen.
Don't have blood on your hands by downsizing current staffing of desks.

I was just in a police station in Crestwood. You know, the department with all part time officers? The lobby is about 10 x 10. An elderly gentlemen sits behind the desk which is enclosed with two inch thick protective glass and an intercom. You have to be buzzed into this lobby in the first place. They have a large door under the window, probably to pass things out to the citizens. A camera in the ceiling. The inner door leading to the back is secured . There is no room for the homeless to lie down. Retrofit all CPD stations, make the lobby smaller, protect the working cops.

FOP should be screaming about this every day in the press and through safety grievances filed by every desk crew in the city. Both 35th St and City Hall are locked down by the "bosses" offices to protect them with guards and metal detectors. Why are district police not afforded the same protection? It's coming people, a repeat of the Detroit station shooting here. I just pray none of our people get hurt or killed.

Are you fucking kidding me? Have you ever been to the city other than Navy Pier or Michigan Ave? The city is not sending crews out to clean streets in the neighborhoods so yes there is broken concrete because after years of neglect it breaks into chunks. And yes there are abandoned buildings and empty lots around the city. The police in this city are so busy running from assignment to assignment they dont have the time to cut the overgrown weeds of the vacant lots or to break up the loose concrete and pour new concrete. And we really dont have time to pick up all the garbage in the street that lazy ass people cant find a garbage can to throw it in. Instead of bitching saying the police should do these services maybe the city could come up with a department that can handle it maybe they can call it streets and sanitation.

Sorry for the rant but sometimes stupid people bother me.

God Bless and be safe.

Our suburban station is like a fortress. Can't even get in front doors after 4pm without talking with dispatcher. Then lobby is beautiful, but with the all bullet proof glass and reinforced walls by desk area, looks intimidating, and we can keep the shitbags outside.
Been in CPD 002 and 005 and laughed my ass off at the lack of security. A friend of mine was on design team for 005 when it was built in the late 70s. Acceptable idea back then for a desk open area I guess....Its sad how behind the times CPD is on this sort of thing now. Its not 1950's anymore with the desk sergeant greeting the nice clean cut visitors in an open lobby.

As society continues to break down, and the economics continue to decline, I fear you will see more of this. The Police are, and have always been, a symbol of the establishment. Like it, or not, some people feel, that striking out against the police, is striking out against all the problems we are facing in this country.

Yep 016 has really taken a turn for the worse just as the politicians wanted. Section 8beasts roaming around everywhere,a couple methadone clinics one at Milwaukee/Lawrence,beggars,bums.A skeleton of a police force. But the property taxes are still 2-4x the southside even a comparable house on the west side of 8 has half the property taxes.

I am a believer in mostly civilians in administrative jobs to include the desk. But, not until the buildings are secure, which they are not at this point. As far as the cleaning help stealing around the station, that, my friends is nothing new. A few years ago 011 tact caught the janitor of 010 buying heroin. He was breaking into our lockers and taking vests and weapons, coffee cujps, flashlights, anything he found in the locker or lying around. Don't use cheap combination locks ( they are easy to defeat) or leave anything laying on the bench unattended. These jobs are political and sponsored and I doubt any background check is made.

12/10/2011 12:31:00

What, with trespassing? Surely not agg batt on p.o. or anything like that. Misdemeanor that will get tossed most likely. Hopefully coppers are all ok.

Any battery to a p.o. should be an agg batt. Fists and feet can lead to a knockout or bell-ringing where a shithead will then go for the officer's gun.

Read it again.

That is exactly why we had to pull over the Street and San and Sheriff S.W.A.P. crews to get something done. So who is stupid?

We got it done because we went to the street bosses of the guys in the orange vests with the brooms and shovels and weed cutters and garbage trucks and asked them nicely for a favor. That beats the shit outa filling out CAPS requests or calling 3-1-1.

And will do it again every so often so God Bless and Stay Safe.

Someone just dusted off the blueprints for "Modernistic High School, 1962." Lazy bastards.

At least the loans-on-auto-titles bail-money mill on the intersection island failed and shut down some time back. Those bright-yellow awnings with the powerful lights glowing behind them were a traffic distraction.

Methadone clinic at Lawrence/Milwaukee, huh? Walking distance from Jeff Park station...this'll be a real neighborhood "booster."

I wonder if they'll advertise in the little Nadig paper, hand out T-shirts and balloons at local events, be civic-minded like that.

*
Need some more "massage parlors," too. Maybe a half-dozen bridal dress places.

Whole new remodeled street full of empty storefronts -- not even a legitimate secondhand store can survive along there.

All the retail is in the malls now, so the smaller, older buildings will get here-today, gone-tomorrow tertiary-scum businesses.

New Internet cafe one door down from a vacant, for-lease storefront that still has an "Internet Cafe" sign. (Belmont/Central)

In between them is a "Medical Supplies," looks like a billing-fraud mill of the kind so popular today, to extract the last pennies saved by working people in the 1950s...

Where I work we have ID cards that we swipe and enter our PIN on a dial pad that randomly scrambles the number so that if someone is looking over your shoulder they won't be able to figure out your PIN. This dial pad is on all entrance/exit doors, elevators and even our locker rooms/bathrooms.
