A teenage mother shot and killed an intruder after a 911 operator said she was allowed to defend her infant son and herself with force.
Sarah McKinley, 18, killed Justin Martin with a single gunshot wound on New Year's Eve when he forced his way into her Blanchard, Okla. home and came at her with a long hunting knifeShe also holed up in her bedroom with a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol, while she put a bottle in her three-month-old son's mouth.
"I've got two guns in my hand -- Is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" McKinley asked the 911 operator.
"I can't tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher told McKinley when she asked a second time. The call went on for 21 minutes as the men powered their way into McKinley's house.
Eventually, Martin kicked in the door and charged at her with a knife, but McKinley fired before he could injure her.

Oh my god, this is horrible news. He was just probably trying to sell newspapers to support his tuition. He could have been a doctor or lawyer.
Just saw a flash of it on tv, but it looked like she lives in a trailer. If that's really the case, it's bizarre that it took them twenty minutes to get in. That gave her enough time to arm herself and prepare for the worst.
Brava to this young woman. Her husband just died, she was stalked by lunatics, and, when she had to act, she was decisive and accurate.
I heard about this earlier this evening and thought "If this poor woman lived in Illinois, there would have been a much different outcome. Being 18, she would probably not qualify for a FOID." This should be thrown in EVERY politician's face as our rights of self defence being trampled apon by a ruling elite above the law and a thug class apathetic of the law.
On another 2nd Amendment issue, with 2 or 3 otherwise law abiding citizens ignorant of NY's draconian concealed permit laws, if state #1 doesn't recognize state #2's carry permits, then state #2 should not recognize state #1's driver's licenses. After all, the 2nd Amendment is a right and driving is only a privilege.

First you need an FOID Card, which takes two months, and a handgun in Chicago. Take a class that costs $150. And a permit to perchance is $100.. Then you can go purchase your handgun and wait an extra three days to pick-up. Hell the women was being stalked. She didn't have three months and an extra three hundred or so with expenses and time. Here the women would have been killed following the law. Said but true.
The women is an angel protecting her baby. Don't mess with a mother who is protecting her young. Motherly instinct kicked in. This young lady would have put her life down for her baby. This 18 year old girl is a true hero and god bless her. That guy had a hunting knife and would have raped and killed the mother and baby.
Good for the victim. She did exactly the right thing. I would have never bothered to ask permission to shoot the asshole if he broke the door down. Fuck him and his pal. There is some Justice in this world.
Problem solved, no more crimes from one out of the two.
Saw the shotgun on TV it was a single shot, break open. Two bad she didn't have a double barrel.
Its for the good of all, that criminals get locked up and executed. Some people just pray on others. As a police officer I say to the people who think this is harsh. Put your self in the victims shoes. Murder, rape, and crimes where you just wish you were dead. As a retired Forensic Investigator I seen the worst.
Great job just wish I could give this mother a huge and tell her she did what she had to and don't ever think twice about it.

According to what I saw on HLN tonight, she was on a 2000 acre property in the middle of nowhere, so not surprising it would take that long for a response. Good that she was armed and defended herself.

HOW TO CALL THE POLICE
An elderly man was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.
He opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.
He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?"
He said "No, but some people are breaking into my garden shed
and stealing from me".
Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available."
George said, "Okay."
He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again.
"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both, the dogs are eating them," and he hung up.
Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the
residence, and caught the burglars red-handed.
One of the Policemen said to the man, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"
He replied, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
Why didn't she just shoot the knife out of his hand!!!

I had to find the British media's version of the story to find out a lot of the details. She lives in a county that has 21,000 square miles and there were three officers on duty. So the time lag is understandable.
She said this guy had been stalking her for a couple years and she had found several of her dogs dead on her property recently.
With the recent death of her husband, and no dogs, the creep probably figured he would have no problem getting into her house and doing whatever to her.
Young woman has brass balls. Her baby has a hero for a mama.
Thank God that this young mother had the good sense and means to protect her child and herself. Watching the interview she seems to be mature beyond her years and really could be a spokeswoman for the NRA.
I have trained both of my daughters to shoot and they too are pretty good shots. Unfor-tunately they both live in peoples republics one in NYC and the other in Chi-troit and can not carry concealed. I hope I am nearby if they ever need a gun.

Don't forget the multi-part gun registration forms -- many desk personnel don't want to give them out to citizens in the first place. "You have to go downtown." Another day off work...
Once you do get the forms, where are you supposed to get all the pictures? How much will that cost, and how much time? You may actually have to go to an area HQ and get a "vision test" -- from a policeman -- under some circumstances.
What is the registration fee up to now -- $30 per year per gun? DON'T FORGET EVEN ONCE. It doesn't matter what kind of problems you're having, illness in the family, out of town, whatever. IF YOU ARE EVER LATE ON EVEN ONE RE-REGISTRATION, THE WEAPON BECOMES PERMANENTLY UNREGISTERABLE AND SUBJECT TO SEIZURE. Even aldermen have found themselves in this situation -- wasn't it Dick Mell who forgot, and had to use his clout to try to get an amnesty passed so he wouldn't have to give up his guns? Not everyone has that kind of power. Same thing with the FOI card -- Daley II made sure possession without a valid card is a FELONY.
The system is set up to screw decent citizens and create paperwork violators -- while the real thugs run around killing police, each other, and anyone else they feel like killing.
Oh -- remember to leave that pistol inside the house when you take the trash out or work in the yard or garage...

It's bizarre, if that really was a trailer, that it took the bad guys so long to break into a tin trailer that the young woman had enough time to arm herself with two handguns and to have a rather long conversation with a 911 operator. Sorry I wasn't precise enough for your scrutiny.

I was with ISP. Get this-45 minutes to get to the crash or call you are assigned-across the county....They have even less staffing. There is no rapid car,zone car, or supervisor. And your backup is even further away. Its a different type of life for sure

We do not need a "castle doctrine" law in IL...we have one....it's just not termed that way

(720 ILCS 5/7 2) (from Ch. 38, par. 7 2)
Sec. 7 2. Use of force in defense of dwelling.
(a) A person is justified in the use of force against another when and to the extent that he reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to prevent or terminate such other's unlawful entry into or attack upon a dwelling.
However, he is justified in the use of force which is intended or likely to cause death or great bodily harm only if:
(1) The entry is made or attempted in a violent, riotous, or tumultuous manner, and he reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent an assault upon, or offer of personal violence to, him or another then in the dwelling, or
(2) He reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent the commission of a felony in the dwelling.

You can get a foid card in Illinois at the age of twelve, my kids have had one for years and they are no where near the age of 18
