PO Lewis Services

  • Services are set for Thursday morning for slain Chicago police officer Clifton Lewis, who was fatally shot during a robbery Thursday night on the West Side.

A public wake for Lewis is scheduled for 10 a.m. at United Baptist Church, 4242 W. Roosevelt Rd., according to Steven Leak, of Leak & Sons Funeral Home. The funeral, also public, is scheduled for 11 a.m., Leak said. The burial will be private, Leak said.

A Police News Affairs statement added that a 9 a.m. ceremonial arrival is also planned at the church.

The FOP site reflects the same information. Does this mean no Wake the evening before? Because we're sure there are hundreds of Officers who'd like to pay their respects and we aren't sure an hour is going to cover it.

Perhaps the family wanted it this way.

It may be another case of the Family getting sick of the Brass turning the funeral into a dog and pony show to show off vs. a memorial to a fallen Officer.

And why hasn't the department sent out an email with all the info regarding the service? I recieved an email the other day informing me that the information would be available on Monday.

I guess the department figures that I'll get the info here and they don't need to waste their time

Thank you SCC for your service

maybe his family is too overcome with emotions to handle a multiple day event. I have had to go through some difficult funerals before (life for children) and they often recommend if family is very distraught that the wake and funeral be combined. Sometimes this is actually nicer or easier for very sick relatives also. So before judging we don't know the full story and should respect the family's wishes . stop worrying about whats more convenient for us.

Well just remeber this. It is his families choice. And us or the police department have no say so.

So just to get this straight, there isn't going to be a big line of duty ceremony? It's just going to be a wake and the rest is private (family only)?
Just don't want to show up bundled ready to stand outside for the ceremony if it's only a wake instead.
Thanks for any input

It's possible the family did this to wrest control from 9.5, Mouthy McLousyspouse and the media...

Too many times in the past, mayors, bosses and the media have hijacked Police funerals...

We've seen it, we're disgusted by it.

We've always said that deceased Officer's family and brothers in arms should be seated in the front rows and the gold stars should render fitting respect and humility by acting as ushers, guidon bearers and traffic control.

The one day when those who are exalted should be humbled and those who are humbled should be exalted...

The politicians and their co-conspirator clergy henchmen can wait outside with their hands in their pockets like the little men they actually are...

You can hate on this post and the poster but what's right is right.

hey you ignorant troublemaking dick head! All this and more was sent in an email and daily bulletin once all info from family was ready to be given. This is NOT about you. This family is still grieving despite being pressured by certain gold stars and political hacks to do it a certain way. This is the family's wishes. For future reference, do what i did. If you have Any questions you feel need be answered, just call down to our police special events who handle all logistics and writing of such plans. Or ask your commander or their office peeps. I did, and the officer who took my call was polite, and answered all my questions. So, stop being a selfish prick and make your call you lazy troublemaking dick head!

Yes, this is true. They have on their plate as much as they can handle, and that is that. We should simply respect their wishes.

Don't worry -- something's gonna shake loose, and soon. 8 people were shown that shiny gun - laughing, waving it around, snapping it at the TV, at each other -- "Whoo!" -- and they each told ten others, who told ten more.

Someone's brother is locked up again. Someone's gonna look around the room, lower his voice, and ask "Kin you he'p me out?"

O Hare Airport failed to put terminal-poled American flags in front of parking lots and main entrance terminals at half mast. These are very large flags, very visible. Flags at police, vehicle maintenance, street and sans at outlying airport posts were put at half mast. Every flag on the airport property should have been put at half mast, not just those at city facilities on site. This is Rahm's spin. Fuck you Rahm or whoever made this decision. When Maggie Daley died, all flags at O'Hare (ALL FLAGS) were at half mast for more than a week.

I had to respond. To a civilian outsider, seeing officers joking and/or laughing in the parking lot of an fallen officers wake might seem ignorant in a sense, I honestly and truly don't think it's out of disrespect. I've been to one too many police wakes and funerals and I can say out of experience that all it is, is just a way officers cope with the pain and the realization that he or she could be the one laying in the casket and tmrw may never come for one of us because of our dangerous job.

It's really not the family's choice or the CITY choice.

It should be The officer's choice and I feel that Off. Lewis didn't want to have a funeral or a wake at all.

He is leaving it up to us to make sure people won't ever want to do this again to a police officer or anyone else!

Justice should be our word and Clifton and his family; blood or friends should be the last to suffer
in silence.

Murder is the enemy and the weapon is forgetfulness.

Always Remember!

Good Night brother and tomorrow will be the greatest day of your life because it will last forever!

Laughing and joking in the parking lot? It's disrespectful plain and simple. Just listen to them talking about where they can eat in the area of the wake. Or whats up with so and so at whatever district.

I worked an honors funeral before. When a family agrees to an honors funeral, you have no say so. Everything is done according to protocol. While the grieving surviving spouse/mother may want to have another family member next to them entering a church, it's police personnel that has to be there.

Everyone should at the very least write down what their wishes are. Pick someone (who can handle all the B.S.)you trust with your life. Parents, Spouse, or children should be out of the question. Put it in your will or trust. Stop saying you will do it tomorrow. Get it done today.
I am a Gold Star Family member and trust me its not a membership anyone wants to be in. Every time an Officer has his life TAKEN my heart breaks all over again.
I have been to numerous wakes and funerals and I have never had an issue with people laughing and joking. Maybe they are telling some stories of what they had with the Officer. Maybe laughing is better then going to the bar and try to find answers in the bottom of a bottle.
Try to stop being so judgemental. You dont know what another is going thru until you walk a mile in their shoes. Enjoy everyday you have and live it for all its worth. I pray that all of you go home safe.
P.O. Lewis I know that you were welcomed home with open arms from all your brothers and sisters that were waiting for you.

A Gold Star Family Member

I have to agree with you, but only to a point. Granted some officers are there only to get out of working, but A LOT of wakes (civilian and PO) I have been to ARE reunions in a way. You know what they say, there are many people (Family included) that you only see at weddings and funerals.
