Misplaced Priorities (UPDATE)

  • It was hot in Stanley Lee’s South Shore apartment Monday morning, so he cracked open a window. That’s when he heard the screams for help.

Lee’s apartment overlooks Rainbow Beach Park along the lakefront, and through his window he witnessed a frightening scene: two pit bulls attacking a 62-year-old jogger.

  • Arriving police officers were confronted by the dogs and fatally shot them, authorities said.

But guess who some people feel bad for?

  • TeResa Gaddis also lives near Rainbow Beach Park. She saw one of the dead dogs as she walked her two German shepherd mixes Monday morning just before animal control officials cleared the scene.

“It’s a shame all the way around. It just broke my heart to see them lying there,” she said.

We guess she'd rather see the 62-year-old man dead on the path. We were also wondering why the media doesn't cover the fact that most days, there's only one or two Animal Control Officers out on the street, and that's only during daylight hours. Many is the time we call or have heard officers call for Animal Control and dispatch tells us six times out of ten that there is only one Animal Control van on the street and he's somewhere else? The other four times, they just take a notification and tell us there is no one available.

It's amazing we don't kill more four legged dogs than we actually do.

UPDATE: From an e-mail, this little tidbit:
  • Hey SCC, did you know all bite numbers are now obtained via 311? They cut staffing at Animal Care & Control to the bone, so the Police Department is picking up the slack again. Tell everyone to update their FOP Books, that 24-hour number at ACC is no good.

Wait a minute... Who is paying for the heat in Lee's apartment? That is the point here. Typical ghetto move, heat up to 90, and windows open. All while the bill is paid for by somebody OTHER than the renter/owner.

That was a brave man who came out with a ball bat -- he may yet prove to have saved the victim's life.

A nice, sharp, full-length axe may be far superior to a ball bat. Since you can't kill these with one blow, break them down. Hacken and hauen, bit of the old butcher-shop sort of work.

Sever the spinal column, and now you got a snarling, vicious half-dog, dragging its useless hindquarters behind it.

Now you can cave its skull in. End.

As for police -- could we please get the shotguns back in the cars, please? A 9mm pistol shrinks like you wouldn't believe when there's a nasty threat out in front. "Is this all I got?"

Blessings to the hapless, innocent victim -- the man who was bitten, and I should not have to clarifly that -- and all wishes for a speedy recovery.

...and damn you ignorant f__ers who keep savage dogs like this in apartment courtyards, not even fenced in. It's not like they listen to you...I'd go after the landlord, too, for allowing these conditions.

I called the city 3 times in a week for a humongous possum living under my deck and wandering my backyard at will in 016. Damn thing was 30-40 pounds, HUGE! I waited 10 days, then I borrowed a .22 and took care of the situation. That was 5 weeks ago, the city has never responded in any fashion, but the job is listed as "cleared" on the web site.

Highest taxes, least amount of services.

Yeah, I know, "Only one bite officer for the whole city and he don't come unless the guy got his face bit off or somethin'." Been hearing that for twenty years or more.

Like today -- "Animal Control" used to pick up dead animals. You got your city work vest, gloves, a heavy trash bag, and a couple shovels. Any garbage truck qualifies, and could drop off at the "Pathological Incinerator," or whatever they call it, at the end of day.

Oh -- they had the woman who runs the dog pound down at 27/Western on WBBM radio today. On...and on...and ON she gushed about her new "Puppy Playland."

Real nut case.

Too bad the broke, el cheapo city wont hire some more dog catchers. They have this thing called a snare, you can control a dog without killing it. I too would shoot if the dogs tried tried to bite off a piece of me or anyone else. I would still like to see more dog catchers hired by the city. And, there should be a special felony charge for using dogs against any first responder. They missed a trick by not passing such a law. Regular assault charges just wont suffice for this.

LMAO! Every p/o that works the street knows why I'm laughing. It was like 20 degrees out today! You would think it was the middle of August with that line. Hey Stanley Lee~ turn your free heat down to about 80 please.
Attention general public: You guys have no clue what we as police officers see every day. These "poor downtrodden" people that you "Share the Warmth" with when you pay more money to Peoples Gas are sitting in their free housing in shorts and no shirts because they jack up the heat to 85 plus during the winter! You honestly would not believe how hot some of these homes are! We really do live in just a completely ridiculous society lmao. wtf.
This fool was too hot so instead of turning the heat down, he cracks a fu**ing window! Which will only make the furnace work that much harder once the cold air comes in. lol I'm sorry to keep beating it to death but wtf man lol. America!!!

and more misplaced priorities...

The USPS get's a reprieve from congress re: $5 billion dollar pension payment.

The tens of thousands of postal worker layoffs have been postponed until...wait for it ...May 15.

Feels like yet another tax payer bailout for a failed company that no-one needs anymore. Nevertheless congress is set to bail them out and let them walk around and do nothing.

The money extraction from the middle class continues..

How much did the tolls on the tollway go up again...and downtown parking go up..and the congestion fees...and the recovery of an impounded veh fines..water bills, taxes...shall I go on?

It's like pouring gas on a fire

Get ready to see a shit load increase in the number of people on food stamps and welfare.

As an owner of 2 pit mixes, I would just like to post this from a relatively anti-pit website, dogbitelaw.com

"other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent. A 1997 study of dog bite fatalities in the years 1979 through 1996 revealed that the following breeds had killed one or more persons: pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas. (Dog Bite Related Fatalities," Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, May 30, 1997, Vol. 46, No. 21, pp. 463 et. seq.) Since 1975, fatal attacks have been attributed to dogs from at least 30 breeds.

The most horrifying example of the lack of breed predictability is the October 2000 death of a 6-week-old baby, which was killed by her family's Pomeranian dog. The average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds, and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed. Note, however, that they were bred to be watchdogs! The baby's uncle left the infant and the dog on a bed while the uncle prepared her bottle in the kitchen. Upon his return, the dog was mauling the baby, who died shortly afterwards. ("Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog," Los Angeles Times, Monday, October 9, 2000, Home Edition, Metro Section, Page B-5.)"

Actually, poodles have the highest incidence of reported bites of any breed. It's not the breeding, it's the way they are trained. That's if you want to discuss this rationally. Otherwise, go back to watching Faux news and listening to WBBM.

Not that you care but this craziness started back in the high rises where a lot of the units could not control their own heat and the heat going to all the units was overheating some of the units, coming through the floor etc. My dorm was like that freshman year of college. The first time in my life I HAD to open the window and wear shorts in the winter. Some of these people need to trun down their heat and some of them literally have little to no control over the thermostat.

I heard that the animal care/control won't come out for racoons or possums. Relative thing? Animal remains always were handled by street/sans.

I always wondered where was the logic, you walk into the apt. and it was 95+ degrees, windows open with a gale blowing the curtins in and all gas burners going full blast on the stove? Like what came first, the chicken or the egg???

According to the media all dog attacks are pit bull attacks yet when on occasion they show a photo of the dog it's nothing but some mutt. Called Animal Control about a dozen times and also called the Alderfools office numerous times. Finally after 6 DAYS they removed the poor critter off the lawn. What great service. Most of the staff at the Animal Control are clout babies who could give two fucks less about doing their job. Gee I wonder why the Times & Trib have never done a story on these assholes. Off Topic, Just learned that it has been realized that the "new unit" that has been talked about here, will likley include mostly involuntarily selected P.O's and Sgts on a 90 day detail starting March. They are aware that getting enough people to volunter is not going to happen. They are revieweing training records and will be selecting those with advanced training. Looks like mostly former 253 and 153. The attitude is , these officers have an obligation and this is thier job. Back to thier current assignments in June. Future call outs possible for incidents of civil unrest. So not a new unit at all.

For all of you blaming the dogs, punish the deed, not the breed. Pit bulls are no more likely to harm and attack than any other breed. Problem is, pits have been chosen as the breed of choice by gang banging and drug dealing trash to be their frontmen and guards. Any dog will harm and attack if they have been specifically trained to do so or abused to the point of hating all humanity. Its the human scum that teaches the violent canines to act with viciousness.

Clearly you're not sorry or you wouldn't have brought it up. Instead of being happy that he heard the cries for help and went to assist, possibly saving the man's life, you focus on the heat loss. I live in an apartment where the landlord pays the heat and guess what? He controls the heat as well, and w/o fail, he sends up too much heat (for me anyway). But, other tenants complain there's not enough, so the only way I can control the heat is to turn off the radiators, or like this guy, crack open a window. You're just an a**hole.

OT: Due to budget cuts, OEMC no longer is manning the security booth in their parking lot at the 911 center. Gates are always up. I thought 911 was supposed to be a secure location? Now anyone can walk or drive through the booth and do whatever to the cars or worse the building and knock out our communication hub. Have people forgotten already? You also have these dispatchers who have their baby dady with an order of protection hunting for them. Now they will have an easy target. So much for safety. Great decision TS!

The breed has been ruined. My dad had one, a female that acted as his bodyguard when he was 5 yrs old. She walked behind him and bothered no one unless they messed with then 5 yr old dad. Once upon a time, they were a good breed that could be trained to watch over mom and the kids while dad worked. Sadly, they are now a weapon of ghetto heads. If people could maintain a fence and padlock it, dogs would be no problem.

It is not the dog, just as it is not the bullet that kills people. It's the owners and the gun. If the city would create an animal fighting/abuse unit-wow key to weapons, drugs, gangs. The possibilities-probable cause to enter, plain view etc... Focus should be on dog owner! Gun owner! Qualify and carry a higher cal weapon if your scared of these dogs. Regarding The Comments About Heating.
I would like to see the TV Program "Myth Busters" do a episode, here in Chicago. The Myth Busting premise would be, are people really freezing in Public Housing, or in their Subsidized Housing Apartment ?
I wish I could get my old frame house as warm as the apartment's where in Cabrini or Robert Taylor. Next Myth; are people on welfare, really going hungry ?
The truth is; they have more food, than they know what to do with. Their shopping carts are overflowing. Not only do they have enough food, they are buying soda pop, and bottled water, by the shopping cart.
I suspect,Many sell their LINK Cards For Cash. Then go to the Food Pantries.
PS: Have A Nice Day ??

It's been my experience that Animal Control is useless. I called them to take a stray, about 3 months ago - I'm still waiting for a call back.

The solution - 1. ban pit bulls.
Sorry if you like the breed, and yes, it's the owner's responsibility, but unfortunately the owners can't be responsible. Yes, any dog taught to protect to that extent or abused will attack, but the point is that you're dealing w/80 lbs of pure muscle w/a pit, not always the case w/other breeds. 2. we need conceal & carry laws. Animal Control is useless and there aren't enough cops to protect us.

Ban stupid people, not dogs

I can't say nothing bad about the nice man who went out to help the dog-bite victim -- sometimes my place is a little warm in the AM, or it's nice out, and I'll crack the bedroom window too for a little while. Just airing out after a night's sleep, healthy old custom.

I know what you mean about crazy landlords, though; the temp-stat on the hot water heat set at 280 DEGREES -- this will flash to steam if anything bursts -- and all the zone valves in the apartments jammed open, solid with corrosion after 40 years.

CAN'T SHUT THE HEAT OFF.

Don't try a wrench; you snap off that copper-brazed joint at the valve and you are gonna get scalded real bad and go screaming to the hospital. The pros are scared of these. Concrete floors with heating pipes too hot to walk on, literally have to lay cardboard down as insulation, registers have to be covered with aluminum foil to stop the convection or you will die, and 20" box fans running in the windows in January. You try 95 degrees on your front side and 20 degrees blowing on your back without getting really sick...

Yet you stick up for the Officer and his pit bull in Iowa, Hypocrites.

Please enlighten us, oh wise sage. Just WHO did the disabled officer's service animal attack?

The two incidents aren't exactly comparable.
