Officers Save Swimmer

Technically, he wasn't swimming though - he was freezing to death:
  • Several police officers braved two-foot waves to save a man who floundered after jumping into Lake Michigan at Belmont Harbor this afternoon to try to save his dog, police said.

Someone called 911 just before 1 p.m. to say a man was in the water, and when officers arrived at the harbor, 3200 N. Lake Shore Drive, they found a 28-year-old man and a dog in the water, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs [...]

The officers called for the Police Marine Unit and other rescuers to come to the scene, but they "feared the worst," and so decided to try to rescue the man themselves...
Good job guys.

Great job guys! Saved both the man and the dog.

It's about time CPD got some good press, and I do not say that fallaciously, but in all honesty. You guys deserve a whole lot more recognition that just the recognition you get for rescuing humans and dogs from the wilds of Lake Michigan.

I disagree.
The dog would jump in there to save you. Dogs are special. SOme people 'don't get it' on dogs and that's fine, but some do.

It doesn't make sense to value animals above humans, still, I do believe it makes perfect sense to place special value on dogs and if someone wants to save them, it's a very commendable thing.

I would jump into the lake to save my dog in a heartbeat. I would jump into the lake to save any dog, any child.

If it were a gangbanger, I'd start a bonfire on shore, roast a few marhsmellows and chuckle as they drowned.

Budget Cuts In Store For Chicago Fire Department

CHICAGO (CBS) — Major budget cuts being planned for Chicago’s Fire Department could lead to fewer firehouses, fewer firefighters, or both.

The choices facing Mayor Emanuel’s new fire commissioner aren’t pleasant, CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports.

There are 96 fire houses spread all over the city. Some are big, multi-truck stations, while others are small one-door affairs, like the legendary Waveland Avenue house across the street from Wrigley Field.

It’s one of 11 single-truck stations that fire department sources say are “old, inefficient and going away.”

Evaluate This!

ICE Agents: “Shooting No Surprise w/ Obama Bad Morale, Mgt @ Immigration Agency;” EXCLUSIVE Victims’/Shooters’ Names

While you might believe the mainstream media narrative that this was just a workplace rage incident, it’s actually far deeper than that. It’s a direct result of how bad things have gotten under the Obama administration and John Morton, the man the President picked to run the agency . . . into the ground. And it’s about Janet Napolitano, who is really running ICE through her surrogates, Suzie “Stripper Pole” Barr and Beth Gibson..."

AMEN! to what 1:11:00 AM said.

Every year without exception, some yuppie jackass wanders too far out and falls thru the ice or gets swept out by waves trying to retrieve some stupid f*&%ing dog. A dog that likely wasn't properly leashed in the first place.

All you soft-as-puppy-shit (pun intended!) liberals (coppers included) should've never been told "sorry, sweetie, but we gave Ranger to a boy that lives on a farm where he can play and run with all the other animals" when your beloved childhood pooch got caught under the rear tires of the neighbor's Vista Cruiser.

The truth hurts sometimes, but is also builds character and coping skills for the real world - something too many people lack these days.

And for future reference, a call of "Dog Stuck On Ice In Lake" needs to be given the same amount of resources and legitimacy as the ghetto call of "My 7 Year Old Is Disrespectin' Me". Unless, of course, it involves a service dog as the earlier poster stated.

Don't get me wrong, I love most animals - particularly dogs. But common sense needs to be applied in situations like this. I'm happy the way it ended, with no officers of CFD members getting hurt.

"The other officers who helped pull the man out were Town Hall Sgt. William Neja and Marine Unit Officer Ed Echevarria.

"The man was taken to [hospital] where he was in good condition, being treated for hypothermia, and the dog was [saved too].

"Joyce suffered a knee injury but was expected to be treated and released..."

The owner probably panicked when he saw his dog helpless.

ALL dogs are great and perform a good service, not just service dogs. Companionship, protection, comfort - you could list MANY reasons why dog is man's best friend.

Great job to those involved in the rescue, you are in the prayers of many. As for Mr. Scrooge here - you probably have no one that loves you.

Do you own a dog? I do, and I'da jumped in after mine if a rescue seemed feasible.

No issues with billing the guy for the rescue. People have to live with the consequences of their actions - just like you guys do, every day. What if an officer jumped in, just to not resurface? Well, that's a risk you assume every day you come into work - for better or worse. Us common citizens love and thank you for it, but don't complain about the risks.

I have faith that the Marine unit can handle such a rescue with comparatively low risks to themselves. After all, the first rule of being a first responder is to not end up needing assistance yourself!

I hope I never have to ride a tour in a squad car with ANY of the bleeding hearts who can't seem to get it thru their heads that a dog is just that...a dog. Yes, they are companions, friends, all that and more to some people.

Yes, I have seen dogs alert people when the house is on fire. You know why? Because its going ape shit trying to save itself from something that people AND ANIMALS have feared since the beginning of time - FIRE. If the dog could figure out how to twist the deadbolt, he'd leave your stupid ass in an instant. But he doesn't have opposable thumbs, so he'll bark and bark until someone who does comes to open that door for him.

If dogs loved their human masters/friends as much as some dummies claim here, THEY WOULDNT EAT THEIR OWNERS HOURS AFTER DYING IN THE SAME ROOM. Oh yeah, mans best friend always starts with the face, and YES I've seen it more than a few times. Dogs are INSTINCTIVE and self sufficient ANIMALS by nature, that's why they turn on their owners once the food supply runs out.

Same goes for when you decide to rescue that cuddly looking malnourished Pitbull puppy that the dope boys were fucking with. He's gonna go all instinct when your 4 year old tries to climb on its back or tug it's ears. Instinct as in maul your child to stop the threat it perceived.

REPEAT-DOGS ARE ANIMALS AND REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH TRAINING & DOMESTICATION YOU INTRODUCE TO THEM THEY WILL ALWAYS FALL BACK ON INSTINCTIVE BEHAVIOR. Only you or no one else quite knows when that'll be. Example: you buy your dog all kinds of cutesy beds or allow it to sleep in your bed or on the couch because 'he's people'. What's Fido do? He curls up in a ball, usually with something (a corner preferably) on at least one side of him. Why? BECAUSE HE'S A DEN ANIMAL PROGRAMMED TO SLEEP LIKE THAT FOR WARMTH AND SAFETY. He doesn't need to share your down quilt, Sally-Boy.

Yes, I have 2 dogs. They stay out year round and serve the purpose their particular breed was bred for: security. They get a raised dog house with straw on the floor when it gets below freezing out. They are fed twice a day and cared for accordingly and per city law and ordinances. They are used as a tool just like dogs have been bred to do since Day 1. I like my dogs. No, scratch that. I LOVE my dogs. But if they ever found themselves paddling for their lives and I'd face death or harm retrieving them, guess what? There's plenty more dogs where they came from. I question anyone that puts even a thought of rescuing an animal of doing so could harm or lead to the death of a person while doing so.

I am a rescuer who must deal with people's very poor choices around the water everyday. I also had a dog, a water dog, who passed away Friday. I love dogs, but neither my dog nor anyone's dog is worth a human life, or most human life. Definitely not the life of the first responders. I would everything except risk my own life for any dog including my own. Common sense helps - if you can't figure out how you'll exit the water, then don't go in. Drowning is not a nice way to go, it's not quick and peaceful. So, don't be selfish and risk the lives of the first responders.

Fuck you. You don't know shit.

I've seen with my own eyes a service K9 in the sandbox run into automatic weapons fire, stand between the body of its recently KIA handler and the hajii who just ambushed him and growl, because it was all she could do to protect her handler who she knew was in danger but didn't understand was already dead.

Dogs are very special creatures.

If you starve a man, he too will resort to cannibalism, but I'd suggest you hit the internet and look up the picture of the deceased SEAL and his dog at the funeral. Maybe then you will understand.

Nah, you wont.

But if they ever found themselves paddling for their lives and I'd face death or harm retrieving them, guess what? There's plenty more dogs where they came from. I question anyone that puts even a thought of rescuing an animal of doing so could harm or lead to the death of a person while doing so.

Okay, you win biggest asshole on the thread award. Please don't get any more dogs. It's a shame the two you have have to suffer with an asshole like you for an owner.

Great job to all the people involved in the rescue of the citizen and his dog. Not enough positive publicity for our department this is a good one.

22 miles of lakefront and not one life ring around. I know assholes will steal them, but least give them a try.
