Protect Yourself

  • This just in from a member of TTAG’s (The Truth About Guns) Armed Intelligentsia:

“As I begin to write this, not 20 minutes beforehand, I pulled my gun in self defense. For the second time in 4 months. In the gun free city of Chicago. I already know what you’re thinking, I’m not allowed to carry a gun in Chicago. Let’s get this out of the way, I have made the decision to conceal carry in Chicago. Yes this is stupid, but it has already been beneficial for me. Not once but twice.

  • This morning I was running late to the “L” and ran the 1/4 mile to the station. Just as I made the platform, the train left. No big deal, I give myself leeway for this very reason. As I’m waiting for the next train, three men step on to the platform on the opposite side of the tracks. They say some words to each other that I’m way too far away to hear and step off the platform and out of sight.

Not a minute later these three same men step onto my side of the platform from the near by staircase. They quickly look around and start walking toward me with fists clenched, I scan around me and I’m the only one on the platform except them. I’m standing about half way down the platform, with both staircases behind these guys.

A mostly happy ending, but the miscreants escape to mug another day. Read the whole story at this link here.

Concealed carry worked, and worked well for this individual. We, the police, can't be everywhere all the time. And we just saw a rumor that the Department is ending CTA Special Employment shortly? What will that to do an already thin police presence on the mass transit front? And just in time for G8 when tens of thousands of protestors will be using the buses and trains to move to and from locations, maybe even staging protests within the tunnels, platforms and bus stations?

Hmmmmmmmm....I wonder if one of the 1,700 new "L" platform security cameras recorded/captured this on film. This guy lives in the downtown area, it's a weekday morning, he's going to work, and there's nobody else on either platform besides him and three bad guys? He says he's a FF/Paramedic, and he doesn't drop a dime to (anonymously) report that three strong arm clowns are running around the "L" platform? Something about this story doesn't sit right with me. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I used to carry my Baretta .380 all the time in the mid 80's while working in the city. It was a misdemeanor then. It was the time when crack came to Chicago. Rule 1) make the appointment early and get out. Rule 2) Do not stop anywhere else other than the appointment, for anything. I remember one time in Pullman estimating fire damage. Took a break on the second floor for a smoke. Looked out the window and was amazed at the amount of street dealing to both cars driving up or people walking up to each other. There must have been 50 people on the block. Scary stuff, glad I was able to make it out. I couldn't do what you cops do everyday. Thanks.

The new CCW law in Wisconsinhas resulted in a"save" for shoppers at an Aldi food store in Milwaukee. A man armed with a small rifle attempted to rob a cashier when a shopper who recently got his CCW permit drew his handgun and aimed it at the would be robber who fled before shots fired. A crowded store, an armed robber could have ended up in a bad situation. CCW saved the day.

I am a disabled officer with 22 years on the job. I just recently was granted duty disability and it was not what I ever anticipated to happen on this job and it did. After having the freedom to carry a weapon the last 22 years that privilege has been revoked and it is a terrible thing. I have spoken to FOP but my words have fallen on deaf ears. I want all officers to know when reading this that you should realize that one day your career could come to a complete halt and change at the drop of a pin and you could be in my position. Never think that you may not be a disabled officer. After 22 years I am not afforded the privilege to protect myself any longer. This is horrible and I ask that just someone reading this realizes that this could be you one day. I wish for a state statue to be introduced and passed in which disabled officers could carry there weapons. If I were to move to Arizona I would be able to carry but not in my own City of Chicago where I proudly served 22 years.

This story is bogus - mildly suspenseful writing (and barely passable in the 'creative' department) by some loser that needs to come up out of Mom's basement for some air and sunlight. 1247 AM called it right.

I call bullshit for reasons beyond the author's presentation of the scenario, none of which I'll elaborate on, lest other douches follow suit with their own tales of bravado.

Note to the original poster: Take a police test if you want to be a cop. Otherwise, save your 'war story' that never happened for the 12 year olds that hang out on your corner.

Un huh first of all your story sounds like bullshit, oooops Im sorry I ment Smells Like Bullshit!!! You dont call and wait for the police. Why-(rhetorical question) because you are illegally carring a firearm (if your story is true).
Tell ya what, Im standing on the cta platform off duty in civilian clothes, you pull out your weapon in a percieved threat because three mopes or whoever are walking towards you with fists clenched. What am I gonna see? You and your gun. What am I gonna hear come outta your mouth? Not what I, a off duty P.O. needs to hear. So, Im gonna pull out my weapon, yell at you police drop that gun and when your untrained no experience ass turns towards me with your weapon you are gonna be chalkies best friend end of story.
So if you folks out there want to carry concealed, you better know what the fuck you are doing when you decide to pull that gun out from under where ever you have it concealed and then you better stick around for us to arrive and have a damm good story for pulling a weapon on unarmed people. We have a use of force model and I can tell you we cant even shoot motherfuckers who are walking towards us with clenched fists. Not at first anyway.......

I woould not sign up for CTA Special Employment if you stuck a gun to my head. I came on this job 20 years ago after leaving my union truck driving job. I was told of CTA Special shortly after arriving on the watch in 015. I could not believe officers would whore themselves out for straight time. We all need to stick together as union employees and force the city to pay us time and a half for overtime. Which is what CTA Special is. This is a basic union right. When you don the uniform and go on patrol and ride buses and trains, the city is taking advantage of you by not paying you time and a half.

Amen. I have never understood why anybody would alienate themselves from the rest of us on the watch by insisting on being treated "special". You know who I am talking about, the ones that start early, leave early and do not attend roll calls. It's this selfish attitude that must have come from the way they were raised. You know what's amazing?

People I know who are anti-gun lib idiots believe that you police officers are opposed to the rights of law abiding citizens to carry concealed.

When I tell them with pride that I have my FOID, and carry concealed, they berate me for breaking the law and making Chicago an unsafe city. For some reason they believe that I, a white collar professional with everything to lose if I went postal, but also with everything to lose if I’m beaten to a pulp or worse by thugs, make Chicago less safe by wanting to protect myself. When I tell them that any Chicago policeman would be fine with me, a law abiding, tax paying, professional who uses CTA, carrying concealed to protect myself, they literally laugh. They honestly believe that you guys want people like me to be unprotected prey, and be the next victim like the author of this piece would have been.

Just because someone carries, by no means does that mean that that person every wants to have to brandish, much less use, the weapon. But I will never, ever sacrifice mine or my family’s safety, in the name of an unjust law that gives worthless criminal thugs an advantage. Fuck Daley, Quinn, and the corrupt Chicago lawmakers for forcing law abiding citizens to make that choice. If it wasn’t career suicide for me to say that to their faces, I would.

Like all the southside women who I know from the bank & have told me (an atty) that they carry every day, "I would rather be judged by 12, than carried by 6." Thankfully, I never go to court, because after having been at 35th & California, I don’t feel safe in the immediate vicinity without protection. The half dozen times I have gone, I drove, so I could bring my protection and leave it in the car.

And I doubt the ISBA would revoke my license if it came to it and I did have to use my weapon. Again, that's a risk I'm willing to take. And if it happens, I can go public and become a soundpiece for unjust gun laws in IL.

End CTA? What ever they do will be beyond our control and of no benefit to the citizens. On Super bowl Sunday I was working 2 Spot [Yeah, I know...but I take what I can get]. A blue line train pulls up at the SOIC as a CTA supervisor exits the booth and starts running [really!] towards us. The train stops and the operator starts shouting that 3 guys in the second car are tearing it up. We look in the car and the three goofs give us that "Deer in the head lights" look. The citizens on the car look terrified and we grab the honor students off the train. The seldom heard phase "Thank God the Cops are here" is heard from a couple and our day got about as good as it gets. All three are arrested on CTA signed complaints.

I guess some people out there are still happy to see us. You're welcome and thanks for the support

Getting a weapon, and concealed carry; I am wondering how one qualifies to buy a gun, and how tightly our quality control is in terms of our background checks for people of criminal, or mental histories?

I am thinking in particular of an incident involving a very regular guy who wound up stabbing 3 people, and killing one of them with his knife this past weekend in Naperville. If he had possesed a gun (and he was a person with clean record, and a stable mental background...)he would have done a whole lot more damage..
As a disabled person I'm not necessarily against the idea of carrying a weapon however just wondering how you can keep from having our streets turn into the old west

So that they can Force every minute you are on duty past the end of your official shift as either CU or "Oh well, we didn't authorize that OT; thanks for the great job on your own time" like they are doing to the rest of the city.

They are doing that to all the other Badge wearing "Public Safety" positions in the City, why would you be different?

OT has to be Authorized for the City to be required to pay it.
The Unions even agreed to that point every darn re-negotiation. You can do all the To/From forms or CATA Edits Documents You want...but until a Supervisor signs it as approved...you don't automatically get paid OT/CU for working more than your assigned shift.

I'm sure no civilian could ever be trained as well as you are.
********************
I shoot with some civilians in some training classes I go to and I hope I never have to meet thugs that are as skilled as they are with their firearms. The only edge I have on some of these civilians is that I actually will kill someone if that type of situation presents itself. I have been in more rough situations than they have and they might hesitate. You can't say the same thing about a gang banger with a gun, they WON'T hesitate as they have shown time after time.

There are some real skilled people with guns out there and from what I've seen, most of them don't have a police star.

Don't waste your time arresting illegals.

Sheriff TOM DART is keeping busy letting them go asap. Eleven (11) who were recently released were again arrested for a variety of offenses & are back in custody at 26th St again.

DART & his multitude of ex ASAs spend their time trying to figure out how he can get on TV & his name in lights. Hopefully eventually the voting public or the Government will end this crime & TOM will need to get a job!

Thanks for 22 years of service. But if you are on disability pension and its not for mental health reason, you should qualify under HR218, the Federal Law. Get the letter from the pension board.

Going to FOP for gun carrying while on disability is a dangerous strategy. The City will will make the argument that if they certify you as healthy enough to carry to carry a gun, you are healthy enough to get back to work.

If I responded to that call that "armed" citizen would have been arrested and a 143a RD would have been generated. We don't need these untrained citizens walking around armed!! Christ, there are actually a few police officers that I have trained that shouldn't be able to carry a weapon but that's another story. These citizens need to just hand over their material items and not be confrontational. Give them what they want and they will most likely leave in peace. Then call 911 with a detailed description.

And you sir, is why citizens do not trust the police. You give them all a bad name by advocating victim disarmament, and giving in to the element. Your supposition is that they will most likely leave you alone but you cannot guarantee that. Maybe they want your property AND your life. Maybe you're a woman and they decide they'll assault you too. Someone that could be your wife, sister, or mother. Or daughter.

No, i say give the savages what's coming to them. Gloves come off, no more bullshit. I can hit a target repeatedly the size of a dinner plate at 30 yards in a stressful situation with a 9mm. Can you?

And finally, how many "untrained citizens" that are legal gun owners are responsible for shooting innocent bystanders in confrontations where drawing a firearm is justified? Do you even know?

I've been a cop for 20 years, and during that time, I have had to draw down 8 times where I was taking up the slack and very close to taking the shot. Three of those occasions took place off duty. Granted, the 5 times on duty probably would never had happened if I wasn't the police, but those three times off duty would have happened no matter what. If I wasn't carrying at those times, I might be another statistic. I carry off duty all the time, but even if I were not the police, I would be doing just like this guy did. Better judged by 12 than carried by 6. Its an outrage that Illinois is the only one out of 50 states that does not allow some form of concealed carry. Can 49 other states all be wrong???

You may be a range instructor, but you don't know shit about the real world. You're telling the law abiding citizens to just give up their possessions to some piece of shit gangbanging thug and then hope and pray that he doesn't execute them just for the fun of it? Screw that! I say blast them to kingdom come. One less animal on the loose preying on innocent people. I'd rather have armed, law abiding civilians walking around instead of a bunch of unarmed sheep. By the way, the police officers that you feel should not be able to carry a weapon, who you say you trained by the way, probably got that way BECAUSE they were trained by an asshat like you.

So, Im gonna pull out my weapon, yell at you police drop that gun and when your untrained no experience ass turns towards me with your weapon you are gonna be chalkies best friend end of story."

Another asshat copper. Use your head when sizing up a situation. You see a white guy standing alone on a CTA platform being approached by a trio of ghetto alter boys, who are circling him like a pack of vultures. The white guy pulls a weapon and all you can think of is a UUW arrest? Did you have ghetto blinders on or what? If it were me, I would have seen what was going down and went to assist the lone citizen in his defense against three thugs. To put it simply, you sir, are an asshat, and give the rest of us coppers who use common sense a bad name!

Holy Fucking Shit SCC, did you read the civil suit that came down? Chicago is to pay shit head's family 1.25 million. After it was agreed that Elrod went home obtained two handguns and a buddy to then go kill off duty police officers. Instead they found one off duty officer. Now, at the time, officer had been facing multiple offenders with weapons proceeds to shoot and kill two offenders who by the way where in the process of attempt murder, and still this jury paid out. Kulis the lawyer for dead almost cop killer said it was wrong for Erlod to be angry and get his guns but it was really wrong for him to die on Belmont Ave. So the latter being, the off duty should of kneeled down so Elrod could execute him in the street? What should this guy of done, Kulis?

Remember these are the juries in charge. They reward shit head behavior. I hope the appeals court overturns this, if that is even possible.

2/09/2012 10:30:00 AM
You missed the point, tough guy.
The scenario will likely play out on a side street late at night. The citizen will pull a pocket .380 and avoid getting pummeled by a pair or trio of shitheads. Wake up, Mr. "Cut a report after the fact" day late and a dollar short Cop.

First, thanks for the reply!

Also, it's not like I walk around my office singing a song about carry concealed. Rather, I'm talking about when I'm in social circles, and topics like gun "control," gang violence, and everyday safety come up. THAT'S when I inform them that I'm a legal gun owner who has been properly trained, as well as an astute private citizen who cares about his family's safety and as such, makes a conscious choice to break what I consider to be an unjust law by the manner in which choose to protect myself and my wife.

Usually, the idiots are my wife’s friends, and many times, while the woman will be appalled, the husband will actually be interested, ask to see my piece, ask about getting a FOID, where I got trained & passed the city certification, etc. I’ve even converted a few of the guys – it’s amazing how your view on the world and protecting those who depend on you changes when you have a family.

I’ve never had to brandish my piece, and I pray that I never will. But if I’m ever forced into a situation when I feel my life is in danger, I will not hesitate to pull it out show it. God forbid if I ever have to pull that trigger.

Guess maybe the commander doesn't like a weapon displayed in the front office or no need to pull it out in the radio room. Any po on the street that is worth anything has to have pulled his weapon if he is doing police work

Any idea how many people you call "untrained citizens" have actual combat experience, moron? In my family alone, fully half of the adult men have "seen the elephant," from Vietnam to Iraq to Afghanistan. Arrest one of us? Before or after you soiled yourself?

If there are police officers that you have "trained" that shouldn't be allowed to carry a weapon, then you should quit because you're obviously a damned poor instructor.
