Sneed Proves CompStat Sucks

Saturday is a throwaway newspaper day. Anything that shouldn't see the light of day goes in the Saturday rag. Here's what Sneed had in her column:
  • Chicago’s murder rate, which had been sky rocketing off the charts early this year, has eased up dramatically.

    * Background: The first 23 days of 2012 saw a 74 percent increase in murders compared to the same time period last year (from 19 murders in 2011 to 33 this year).

    * Foreground: As of Friday, statistics show the murder rate is now only 9 percent greater than it was this time last year (from 44 murders in 2011 up to 48 in 2012).

    * The reason: Police spokesman [...], citing preliminary information, attributed the drop to a recent saturation of police resources in the 7th and 11th districts — which accounted for nearly one third of this year’s murders.
So all those resources poured into 007 and 011, two communities that have been at war with each other as well as the police for nearly 50 years now, and all we have to show for it is that the city murder rate is still rising.....but at least it's rising slower.

That's what passes for good news around here - it's only up 9%.

Well the numbers for the two districts don't lie... No homicides in either district going on two weeks now... Say what u want but it's working in those two districts... But the rest of the city is keeping up pretty well it seems

You nailed it!

Pure statistical manipulation and corporate/political spin for the election.

We're now at the point where we pick a reporting time window to create the largest number possible so that we can show how much crime has fallen.

23 days? Why did they select 23 days except to create an illusion?

Made the numbers look so much more impressive didn't it? Yet some of us know it's only a lull, and playing the devils advocate, if it's proven not to be one then the cities leadership is guilty of failure to do anything when they knew all it would take is a few saturation teams.

To not waste a crisis you have to create that crisis first and that is exactly what has happened.

Let crime explode in a district so that you can play hero once the crisis has reached a tipping point.

Let's be real here. The political apparatus doesn't want to wipe out these gangs, it's how they themselves build their power base and budgets.

Crime is used as a tool like the school children are used as tools for tax revenue. Can it get anymore obvious?

Import some more illegal immigrants to get those crime numbers back up so that we have a tool to demand more manpower and a larger budget.

Besides, we get $1,200.00 a head in federal money for each one we import once they're counted via the census.

Ask Rahm he'll tell ya.

Ironic that the article references a decline in homicides: Upon reading this, Chalkie was pissed and let at least 7 bodies drop on Sunday

Don't mess with Chalkie!

Let me show you something else when it comes to media spin and stats to fit a political agenda.

Illinois Employment and so-called "new jobs created".

In July 1997 Illinois reported a seasonally adjusted employment base of 5.9864 million workers. In Dec. 2011 we had 5.9767 million workers employed.

WE LOST JOBS.

Not only did we lose jobs over the last 15 years -- what happened to all those new people that should of been entering the workforce over those 15 years and growing the tax base that funds city services and pensions?

Oh and don't even get me started on what has happened to wages over that same time period.

In spite of all the political hype about jobs being created the latest poll by Gallop shows unemployment rising in Fed 2012 and underemployment, people working part-time that want full time work at 10%.

Underemployment, a measure that combines the percentage of workers who are unemployed with the percentage working part time but wanting full-time work, is 19.0% in mid-February. This is higher than the 18.7% recorded for January, and is up significantly compared with January's mid-month reading of 18.1%.

Now I ask you. What about the 200,000 people that Rahm claims the census miss counted by? That's enough people to raise Chicago's unemployment rate by 50% from it's current level if they were all unemployed.

It's all numbers games with these people to present a political image to advance their careers. CompStats is just another spin-off of that bullshit.

Doctor tells his patient he has three months to live. Patient tells the doctor I don't have any money to pay you right now so the doctor gave him another six months to live.

When will the powers that be figure out that the average taxpayer does not want to give up his Police protection so gang bangers will stop killing each other?

The only ones who care about statistics are the politicians that use them to tell their lies.

This is GREAT news, for what SSC and the FOP have been claiming for years. MANPOWER MATTERS. The City needs to HIRE MORE POLICE, if they want crime to go down. Take the crime stats from 007 & 011 and shove it in the Departments face!!!!

It's been mentioned that certain area four commander in his quest to be in the good graces of the supt is approving multiple clear ups that are dubious at best. Hope it doesn't come back to bite the detectives. But got to kill crime and look good at comstat.

Sneed has been around for the last fifty years! All she dose is write favorable articles for her rich and clouted friends. Never stepping on any toes, your part of the problem with all this graft and political corruption going back to the Daley's first job as state rep. Now you push another brother Bill for Govenor. Thats right keep the graft in the family!

The FBI won't even use Chicago crime statistics. They know how fudged up they are. Sure it goes on in other towns too. Is this done to make pols look good or make us feel safe? For those of us who work the job we know it is all bullshit. The real test is can you leave your house and come back in one piece.

Oh Yeah! Check the stats for this weekend, they are off the chart, this administration needs to be checked out by the FBI, who mandate crime stats, they are screwing the public in the REAR END, commonly known as the ASS !.
Rahm thinks he is the golden emperror and will have to answer sooner or later !. We are in for a Big Screwing come contract talks ! this mayor takes his lead from the business world execs who are telling him to do things, he has no clue as to labor issues, I have heard from more then one person that he will only offer us managed health care, meaning HMO's and Clinics and Doctors that the City will contract with for care. No more Doctors and Dentists of your choice, plus we will pay more, lots more, why? because all of our Police unions are pussies, they have no clue as to how to negociate with this guy, Boy I don't care how much money Daley gave to his pals or stole, We got ours.!

Cool homicides down. The press doesn't report most shootings / homicides. Zone 8, 3rd watch alone had two shot in 004 (one dead) and two shot in 006. Another guy died of wounds gsw from 16feb. No point to saying this. Same ghetto bs. But it's mcballicker and the crap mayor that want to make it seem like we have enough cops. No mfers, we need more and we need to stop being f-&&ed with! Proof comes in may

Poster at 12:06 is absolutely correct. Hire more police for every district and watch crime truly go down. Use TIFF money. No, that would upset the preachers and gangbangers....the voting block!

GOD I hate going to work now and dealing with the box bullshit. All the stat lies and data manipulation makes me want to puke my guts out. Nobody has fun anymore, its gotten so much dangerous for police these days, the department continually stabs us in he back and spits on us, morale couldnt be any worse and our dept leaders suck and are clueless. I just found myself fillng out job applications for other suburban departments. thats something I tought I would never do.

I second that. It is obvious that the Department only has the resources to tamp down crime two districts at a time. We have many bad districts in the city. WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH OFFICERS TO KEEP CRIME DOWN CITYWIDE. FOP and the city have proof now. MCMOUTH, can you say with confidence that we have enough manpower to lower crime citywide?

I see comstat as a useful tool, not the be all and end all of crime fighting. One thing for certain, district commanders are finally held to some accountability. In my time district commanders never cared or had to address crime problems and not one was ever demoted for poor performance.

Wait until COMSTAT and accountability come to the detective division. Wait until the property crimes detectives are assigned to each district station and must report to the district commander. Then you will see people in the d units upset, very upset.
