No Range For You

  • Plans to build a shooting range for the Chicago Police Department near marshland on the Southeast Side have been scrapped after the sighting of a bald eagle nest near the proposed range, a law enforcement source said.

The $2.5 million, 40-person shooting range was to be used by Chicago Police officers, retired Chicago Police officers and suburban departments.

Wildlife advocates have long opposed the building of the range, saying the noise would negatively affect herons, egrets and other birds that roost near the proposed site.

Chicago Police said in a statement Monday: “When we began exploring options for sites, we made sure there was a process in place so that organizations would be able to provide input. Based upon the input we received throughout that process, the Chicago Police Department decided not to pursue this site.”

Why not just build it when the eagles aren't looking?

Back to the drawing board.

Why not build it near the site of the old US Steel facility? Lots of vacant land out that way that could use some development.

Some PETA fuck or tree hugger will find some bird laying some eggs and that will be that. Do these "conservationists" know the extent to toxic shit that lies underneath the proposed site of the CPD Range?

If I knew that Eagle nest was there I'd have gone there and scared the Eagles away and then blown the shit out of that nest. I might do that anyway. Now it is a 40 mile drive, at least, to get to an outdoor rang that is adequate for police.

The damn liberals had the lakefront trap and skeet range run off years ago.

If I encounter a home invader inside someone's home, before I use a firearm, I will inquire of the homeowner what he or she prefer that I do that won't offend them. Should we treat the felon like a rainbow trout in pristine Montana? That is, catch and release in the hopes he will turn his miserable good for shit life around? Yeah, that's the ticket.

And as for a cougar, I will wait until little Joshua or Emily is inside the cougar's mouth and wait for instructions and wait for Marlin Perkins and his animal tranquilizer gun to show up so we can return the mountain lion to his native habitat up in the Dakotas.

Herons & Egrets & Birds ,Oh My ! What a croc-o-shit . I'm sure that the Eagles will be there for generations to come (BULLSHIT) if I were an eagle the last place I would go was Chicago. It's another win for the treehuggers . Save the marshland there might be some indangered worms or snails in the soil also. It just makes sense , the city was not going to spend that much money for a bunch of coppers to shoot some ammo . I'm sure that Tiny Dancer & McStupid are happy now . Well I guess it's no longer (for the kids ) it's for the birds now .

Who needs a range? Just oil up your old pistola and pop some of these stray cats and dogs running around. If your lucky you might run across of of those citified coyotes or maybe even an old north shore cougar.

Building a bridge across the Illinois River downstate was supposedly going to kill the eagles. 20 years later, the eagles are still there; in fact, it's called the Eagle Bridge.

I agree with one of the previous posters here.
That former U.S. Steel land would be an excellent
location in which to build not only an outdoor
range, but a state of the art INDOOR range as
well; we know the old ranges at the areas are
pretty raggedy, and have been for years.
Now, if we can just pry the funds for doing
this out of tiny dancer 9.5's waifish little hands...

A woman from Los Angeles who was a tree hugger, a liberal Democrat, and an anti-hunter, purchased a piece of timberland near Colville , WA .

There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got many splinters in her crotch.

In considerable pain, she hurried to a local ER to see a doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist, a democrat, and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her.
She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. The angry woman demanded, "What took you so long?" He smiled and then told her, "Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a "recreational area" so close to a waste treatment facility. I'm sorry, but due to Obama Care they turned me down."

This is such BS!!! Last year this same group group claimed that the range would have a negative effect on all kinds of little furry animals procreating in the area.

Now they are claiming that this is the first mating pair of eagles discovered in the area in 60 years.

News flash!!! There have been at least 10 matting pairs of Bald eagles over the last 15 years in this area. They nest next to the river with the boat and Barge traffic all day. The eagles don't seen to mind.

They mate next to the expressway with tens of thousands of cars and trucks going by all day. The eagles don't seen to mind.

The area that the range WAS to be built is in a Highly industrial area. All kinds of heavy construction equipment and truck traffic making noise all day and night. The eagles don't seen to mind.

NONE of this has ever seemed to bother the eagles in the area.

The range location is about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile away from any point on the river. The nest is immediately adjacent to the river.

This is the same group that protests every plan devised to develop or build anything in this area at the coast of MANY jobs that could be created.

They are suing the construction company rebuilding the 130th Street and Torrance intersection. Claiming that the construction is interfering with a few beavers in the area, which in the last few years have decimated hundreds of trees along Torrance Ave. And causing all sorts of flooding in the area.

Ten years ago they sued the city for not maintaining the wet lands and would not lay off until the City gave them a huge chunk of land, which they now call the Hegewisch Marsh. It is nothing more more that a swamp full of musk rats and you guessed it, those dam beavers.

This group is just like PITA which stands for Pain In The Ass!

Maybe the community as a whole should sue the shit out of this group for interfering with the growth and prosperity of the entire neighborhood.

I hope the eagles eat every beaver, musk rat, every other furry little animal and all the other birds in the area.

The City gave up on this location because this group has been suing the City and every other corporation in the area for the last 25 years!

F&$# every one else, as long as the Musk Rats are happy!!!

I say nay nay, that site was troubled from the start. The next best place is the land that the Daley Family stole from Bensonville for the O'Hare extension. There are thousands of acres that will never be used for anything, plenty of room for an outdoor and indoor range. And don't say it's too far, you were just going to drive to the extreme southeast side, now how about the extreme northwest side?

Indian Tribe Gets Permits To Kill Bald Eagles

(Fox) The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has taken the unusual step of issuing a permit allowing an American Indian tribe in Wyoming to kill two bald eagles for religious purposes.

The agency’s decision comes after the Northern Arapaho Tribe filed a federal lawsuit last year contending the refusal to issue such permits violates tribal members’ religious freedom. Although thousands of American Indians apply for eagle feathers and carcasses from a federal repository, permits allowing the killing of bald eagles are exceedingly rare, according to both tribal and legal experts on the matter.

“I’ve not heard of a take permit for a bald eagle,” Steve Moore, lawyer with the Native American Rights Fund, or NARF, in Boulder, Colo., said Tuesday. “I see it and NARF would see it as a legitimate expression of sovereignty by the tribe, and respect for that sovereignty by the Fish and Wildlife Service.”

Federal law prohibits the killing of bald eagles in almost all cases. The government keeps eagle feathers and body parts in a federal repository and tribal members can apply for them for use in religious ceremonies.

Also, I tried using the range last month, guess what, its broken because the city refused to maintain them and keep them running

Not a surprising move. Was taking to some college kids the other day and they were resolute in their opinion that the Chicago police should not even carry guns. It was their contention that brandishing weapons in our holsters actually contributes to societal violence by augmenting an already out of control gun culture. Unbelievable huh.
