Joravsky - What's Wrong With Chicago?
- It's been nearly two days since President Obama mercifully pulled the plug on our G8 weekend, and I still can't find anyone who cares that it's gone.
Oh, wait—that's not true.
Apparently, Mayor Emanuel's taking the loss very hard. And there are those activists who will miss having the grand, whole-world's-watching stage on which to rage against the machine.
A few years ago, Thomas Frank wrote a provocative book called What's the Matter With Kansas? In it he examined why working-class white people in Kansas generally vote Republican, even though it's against their financial best interests.
I recall many earnest discussions among learned Chicagoans along the lines of—man, those yokels in Kansas are weird.
Well, Chicago, it's time to look yourself in the mirror and ask: What's the matter with Chicago?
Cause when it comes to weird political behavior, you’re at the front of the line.
Aside from Joravsky's typical media elitism (yokels in Kansas? learned Chicagoans? a bunch of slanted attacks on republicans), he points out some obvious truths no one else seems to:
You say you believe in progressive taxation, but you willingly sign on to the TIF scam, which essentially robs the poor to feed the rich.
Supposedly, this is a union town, yet you voted for one of the most antiunion Democratic mayors in the country.

My wife and I voted early already....straight Republican. Hopefully it will catch on.
Two generations of Lipinski and a lifetime of Madigan and the Clearing area still can't get a viaduct at one of their train crossings.
Joravsky is the last real journalist left in Chicago. I wish the mainstream media would give him a column, we know that would never happen in this corruption pit though.
Everyone is tired of the constant corruption and taxpayer bilking.
They'll soon realize that the communists that call themselves the Chicago democratic machine are rotten to the core.

Now if only Chicago could "relocate" the NATO SUMMIT out to "Area 51" in Nevada. The delegates can take an hour's drive down to Vegas to get their freak on.
The Chicago electorate has been intentionally dumbed down to the least common mental denominator by Daley Inc.
The middle class has intentionally been destroyed and replaced with the wildly fertile, extremely violent, tax absorbing, non-contributing catered to constituents and their liberal, yellow-pinky transplanted sympathizers who have bought into the madness of the little Boris Karloff in tights.
Amusing that so much of the implementation of their vision of utopia hinges so much on destroying the very concept of Police and Policing in this town.
Policemen evoke a bygone era of tough, hard men who did the damn thing in the name of the law for a public that knew and appreciated the rough and tough things they did because Chicago was and is a place of particularly rough and tough criminals and such.
Now the criminals have gained access to the levers of government power and media access.
The public refuses to even acknowledge this even in the face of what's happening in real time.
What's REALLY maddening is the insistence that it's The Police who are the problem.
This is what makes The Policeman feel betrayed.

Bullshit! The Dem's will all get back in and keep control of everything. Why?? Because they hand out the jobs, pensions, and allow unions to bully private citizens. Daley and Madigan control the cash flow of more than 50% of Illinois, Cook County, and Chicago populations, through jobs and welfare. Your neighbors and relatives are collecting multiple pensions that they paid nothing or very little towards. No chance it changes until it all comes crashing down. And it will, because the current system is unsustainable, but until then, these crooks will tax the piss out of us and destroy the middle class.
As for all those guys who took out second mortgages on their homes to boost their sham pensions, Beaver's style, enjoy it now, cause they won't last forever.
the other best thing they could do would be to move the NATO meeting, to.....Washington, D.C. (lots of embassies there, and they're used to large protests all the time)..

These politicians in Chicago are pure evil. They pretend to be liberal, but they are not. They pretend to be green, but they are not. They pretend to be unionists, but they are not. They pretend to care about children, but they do not. Only total idiots believe a word they say. Yet they keep getting elected.....
I am so sick of the city bs. I voted Republican too. Why is it things are so fucked when we have one party in charge? The Dems rule the roost and its far worse now under them. We need more Independents and Republicans in charge.

The "learned Chicagoans"/"yokels in Kansas" is sarcasm making fun of Chicagoans for thinking so highly of themselves, even though similar questions "what's the matter with ..." can be asked of them. It's not media elitism. It's self-criticism by a Chicagoan.
