NYT Discovers CompStat Scandal

If the Old Gray Lady is writing about it, how much longer until someone makes a connection to McGee8's role in instituting it in New York and his current effort to spread its statistical malfeasance nationwide?
  • This week, the findings of an internal police investigation into his claims were reported in The Village Voice in an article by Graham Rayman, the latest installment in a series that has won awards for chronicling the case of Officer Schoolcraft and the corruption of police crime statistics. The investigation found “a concerted effort to deliberately underreport crime in the 81st Precinct.”

The 85-page report, never released by the Police Department, vindicated Officer Schoolcraft, who has been suspended without pay for more than two years. He has filed a lawsuit, charging that he faced retaliation for telling the truth. Officer Schoolcraft recorded all the precinct roll calls for two years, and also recorded the raid on his home when he was brought to the psychiatric ward. One senior official confiscated his audio recorder during that encounter, but he had secreted a backup.

The question of crime statistics is a matter of great sensitivity in the Police Department and at City Hall, which regularly boasts of New York’s safety. But more than 100 retired police commanders told researchers that intense pressure for annual crime reductions had led some officials to manipulate statistics. The department set up a panel in January 2011 to investigate the claims and report in three to six months, but authorities have said nothing of it or its work since then.

The CPD already has its own history of manipulating statistics - domestic related auto thefts, damage to property or theft from building instead of attempt burglary, aggravated batteries downgraded to simple batteries based solely on the damage, the list is extensive.

No one wants higher crime stats, but the cover-up of actual crime conditions isn't doing anyone any good.

lets not forget about certain manipulation of some statistics since gmac got here. Lets think, several drunken domestics.... bar disturbances, drunken fights at certain christmas parties, drunken disturbances infront of wrigley field, drunken disturbances with off duty cook county sheriffs working security on rush street and so on.... hmmmmm, who was involved in that???

Don't know if it is true or not: The FBI does not include Chicago's crime numbers in its statistical analysis because the numbers are so "massaged" as to be meaningless.

True? False?

SCC said, "No one wants higher crime stats, but the cover-up of actual crime conditions isn't doing anyone any good."

Beg to differ, but it does a select few 'someones' a load of good. Maybe all the way to the White House for one of them, as he touts his great management and impressive crime reduction in one of the largest cities in the country.

The manipulation of crime statistics can bring HUGE personal benefit to a few people. We just have to figure out who and why. Shouldn't be too difficult at all.

Fiddling with the numbers is nothing new to us. For a reminder, search back on the Web for Pam Zekman's exposes in 2010 and 1982. When will they learn that all such conspiracies will backfire and cause much more harm than facing the truth at the outset.

(Reuters) - Shares in Smith & Wesson Holding Corp (SWHC.O) shot up nearly 18 percent to their highest in more than two years on Friday, after the gun maker hiked its full-year sales forecast on a higher order backlog, reflecting strong demand for its guns and rifles.

The company, which competes with Sturm Ruger & Co Inc (RGR.N), Glock Inc and Taurus, reported a 60 percent surge in firearm backlog in the third quarter.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Gun sales in the U.S. are booming.

Enthusiasts are stocking up on guns and ammunition, and some in the industry are wondering whether sales are spiking as they did after Democrat Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008.

That rush created a nationwide shortage.

“We’re at the top of the roller coaster and we’re about to plummet down the side,” said DeWayne Irwin, owner of the Cheaper Than Dirt gun store in north Fort Worth, which set a sales record for the month of February. “It’s fixing to happen again. I don’t know if it will be to the same extent it was before, but I see it coming.

“Look who the Republicans are trying to put against Obama,” he said. “It’s the Keystone Kops, and people are getting scared. People are terrified he’s going to get re-elected and then he won’t care about getting votes next time. He’ll just pass whatever legislation he wants.”

---

Last year, the FBI received more than 16.3 million inquiries from people running criminal background checks on potential gun buyers. That’s up from 12.7 million in 2008 and 11.4 million in 2007, FBI records show.

...and that's what this job has come to.

3/10/2012 08:14:00 AM

The rank and file didn't turn this job into what it has become, it has been the corrupt political leaders and their corrupt clout-appointed bosses. Tony Caruthers, a commander? Two felons for father and brother? Good choice, he obvious was put up by the black Irish cabal.

I don't need to go into the reasons the job is what it is, they all have been well documented over the past few years on this blog.

This is near the middle of March, still received no training or equipment for NATO. And Rahm has the nerve to claim we are well trained and prepared for anything? This after he and his crooked predecessor have decimated a once proud department.

Now does that count as disparaging?

Why isn't it against some order to have incompetent and corrupt leaders? It is only a rule violation for us to dare complain or write the truth in a public forum.

Bullshit.
