- It seems that the powers that be want to take the lowest preforming officers on the watch and have them present at the Comp stat meeting to answer for their performance in the district. They will get a court notification to appear. Can someone say witch hunt! hostile work environment.....f^&k this department
Pardon our laughter, but if this is any sort of a "confrontational" meeting, you're entitled to the representation of your choice and a time frame of not less than 24 hours, probably more.
If the brass, specifically McGee8, is demanding numbers from any officer, demand he cite chapter and verse of the Department Order, the contract section and finally City Ordinance covering quota based policing. We're pretty sure that will end the witch hunt fairly quickly.
And we're pretty sure that if you were in the 1800 block of Avenue Z and the assholes are shooting in the 2500 block of Q Street, there's no way you can be responsible for something happening 12 blocks away.
And if you're a bid spot, all the better. They aren't going to be moving you any time soon.

I used to get into it all the time with my watch commander about my numbers. I work in a busy district and answer a shit load of calls everyday. THATS ACTIVITY. Just going to all these calls and dealing with all the bullshit. Hell, it'd be easier for me to go get an arrest. But that was my thing. I answered every call i got in a timely manner and rode on every job i was close to to back up my brothers. I was loved on the watch, but in his eyes i was a dog b/c i didn't bring in 5 parkers a day, a mover, an arrest, etc. You can't win with these number crunching type bosses. They just don't get it.

One thing is very, very very clear. The FOP is in the pocket of the Mayor's pocket. That didn't take long. Lots and lots and lots of police officers have retired since last last Aug. 2011 but FOP is not publishing the numbers or names. I repeat, large numbers of police offices of all ranks having been pulling the plug and walking away Nov, Dec , Jan and Feb but know one in the know is releasing that information. Not the Mayors office, Police personal office or FOP. I'm willing bet money that we have lost another 200. And I can think of several officers retiring in March, June, and Nov 2012. more retiring in 2013. And that's just 018. This this dept is a joke, just holding it's breath hoping nothing really bad happens hoping to run the clock before it does. The police dept and Mayor does not care about you , your health, your ass. You are nothing more than a number that is making to much money . The city's only concern is future law suits and cutting your medical. Get that though your head or please for the Mayors sake retire so the Mayor can tell the fine citizens of Chicago how much money he has saved the city.

There is no mechanism for coppers that answer calls make the right calls, and do good paper on this job. And finally lock up felons.

Read your contract....correct, they cannot move a bid watch officer, AND THEY CANNOT MOVE A MANAGEMENT WATCH OFFICER. Once your on a watch, bid or management, thats your watch. Thats the 80%-20% number formula. They can only move you by seniority. If you were a management officer and they moved you to another watch without going by seniority, thats a winnable grievance if it's filed in a timely manner. READ YOUR CONTRACT
If a police officer is questioned about his lack of activity as compared to other officers within the same unit, I just do not believe that is a quota system. And, a performance review could reflect this lack of activity. However, one writer brought up a good point, the fact that he works in a busy district and answers many calls. Then, maybe the department should keep track of how many calls this officer answers and the time spent on each call and compare that to the same standard for all officers within the same unit. You have to have some standard to rate police officers. I think you will admit that way too many do little or nothing and get the same pay.

As a lieutenant in a southside district I think this is a good idea. Some Officers should be embarrassed by their lack of performance and should answer to same. I have many good Officers of all demographics assigned to the watch which come to work prepared and perform their jobs. To these I can not thank enough. But why should these fine Officers get stuck performing all the work while the few malcontents drive around looking out the window hating the world, their jobs and reflectively themselves.

A whole lot of people comment on the flood of lawsuits that will follow any action the department takes that they do not like. However, I rarely see or hear of any " flood" occuring. To sue someone can be a costly and time consuming undertaking and the results might not be to your liking. The city has a habit of sending a bill to the person who sues them and loses. A bill for their expenses and believe me they can and will collect. It is legal and can cost you thousands. Before you sue, be sure of your case and calculate what you might win in a successful suit. minus the attorney's fees and expenses which can easily amount to 50% or more of any settlement.
That's great about the Sgt's from 19/23, whatever it is these days, we could use some Sgt's on 1st watch in 005. Welcome! At least we are right off the expressway.

My favorite times are when I hear dogs complaining to the new(er) Sgts and PO's. "I aint doin shyte anymore. It aint like it used to be." They say this while looking like a grizzled vet/old salt.
The truth is, most of these guys who say this are old in age, but not old as in time on. I knew most of you dogs for years.(I have 14 on so I'm a mid-timer!!) You 20 year guys who say this had 6 on when I met you.

How many sgts in 019 are management? I think theres a total of around 50 sgts there now with some doing a tour as a 10-4 unit with another sgt.

Officer why is your activity level where its at? Why havent you written a parker or mover in the last 12 months?
Well, Sir- you see its like this. Walk out of Roll Call, and turn the radio on, and then they give us 3 or 4 jobs. Try to sneak and grab a coffee before clearing from the last in progress job that is 2 hrs old.
Then when we clear up we get 3 or 4 more, and while we are on those jobs we listen up for our fellow officers who maybe calling for an assist. Then we realize that 2nd watch left up with less than a quarter tank of gas, and we have to go half-way across the city to get gas.
Then we try and take our contractural 30 min lunch break, but are denied so that we take an in-progress BS domestic call which is nothing more than baby mama drama in which she alledges abuse. Now we gotta lock up the alledged offender, and AIRA doesnt work, and we find out that he is a convicted felon and requires a call to Felony review... Takes them 2 hours to call back and listen to the story. Charges denied for some reason.
Now there is an hour left in the tour, and we ask for a late lunch. SGT gets all pissed off, our co-workers get pissed cause there is another car gone. Cause we have 2 cars that work the dope scene who are wanna-be tac guy.
Now thats 3 nites a week Sup... So its impossible to do parking or traffic since we are short people 2 or 3 cars down every night. All I do is chase the radio from start to finish. WHY? You tell me boss. Wheres all the people that were working when I was a PPO?

They had 13 sergeants on 3rd watch on Tuesday and putting 2 of them in a car together on 1st watch. Where is the XO? 3 Tact secretaries and a shitload of people in the commanders office. Stop screwing around with the workers on the street and clean up the inside mess. 20 9171s need to go. You can also get rid of that useless tact secretary/abandon building officer that has less than 7 yrs

My stats on the Performance Recognition System are INACCURRATE!
A Sgt. was showing a bunch of us our numbers and DRIVER (hazard movers)and TSSS(Blue traffic stop cards) numbers were NOT EVEN tabulated!
I know I do those blue cards all the time and I have written DUI's and stop signs etc
FUCK THE DESK or FUCK THE REVIEW OFFICE OR WHOEVER is not putting it on the computers!
The Commanders should be seeing this WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING AT?
The goofy Lt. wants numbers but doesnt even see the problems we have...if he looked close enough he would see that his DESK or he himself or whoever in the front office is screwing us up or better yet HIM and the Commander up for not having the STATS right

Just because you dont write a parket or mover does not mean your a doggass. Doggass in my definition is someone that stays down on there jobs and are not clear and available that screws over other officers. Also officers that dont back each other up in my opinion are dogasses. Keep smiling at the brass and writing the parkers and movers company man....

I left a southside dist in which a certain meritorious hack was Capt and everyday thought he earned would bring certain p/o's to tears. The funny part was that some people belived the hype when they were called dogs. I'm just glad I left.

Good Luck! L.A. officers were classified as lowest in productivity and sued and won millions for that. They won because technically we DO NOT have quotas and should only respond to crime, but not make it happen. How many sgts in 019 are management? I think theres a total of around 50 sgts there now with some doing a tour as a 10-4 unit with another sgt.

Sgt.'s are hereby forbidden from ever answering 10-4 on the radio. If two Sgt.'s are working on Beat 1910 on a particular watch they will both be 1910 and one will go home early, as has been the custom.
Sergeants will silently go to the station and leave at the appropriate time. They will not report their leaving or announce that they area now 10-99. They will simple go to the parking lot and drive quietly home and stay out of taverns and other such public places.
give me a quota.

Amen. But then our fellow asshole police officers who come on here to do that would have nothing to do. Everyone likes to call out other people for where they work without knowing why that person took that position. It's no different than someone requesting an early or late car. Maybe, just maybe, they have a sick family member or they have something going on they want to keep private. And always remember when you come on here to trash someone or do it in the district, you never know what that person is going through in their life. God forbid that person is suicidal. So just go to work, do your eight hours and stop worrying about what other people are doing.

Numbers do not tell the whole story and you can not antagonise people and expect them to produce,crime is a variable and as such can not be catagorized,as the police we have to consider all constitutional rights of the citizens before taking action...or we will find our dumb asses at corporation council listing our assests for Lovey and Lovey...

As a lieutenant in a southside district I think this is a good idea. Some Officers should be embarrassed by their lack of performance and should answer to same. I have many good Officers of all demographics assigned to the watch which come to work prepared and perform their jobs. To these I can not thank enough. But why should these fine Officers get stuck performing all the work while the few malcontents drive around looking out the window hating the world, their jobs and reflectively themselves.
I agree with you for the most part, but the thing you're missing is the where is the supevision? Why are Sgts allowing this to happen?
If you're southside it probably has to do with the fact 1 Sgt as the DSS and 1 Sgt on the street, especially on 1st watch.. How long till this blows up in our face?
But for to long supervisors would rather be p/o's with stripes than supervisors.
A supervisor doesnt have to be an asshole to do their job. I guarantee the workers would appreciate a supervisor calling out the dogs, so that would only leave the dogs to complain.

sorry lt., 1811's and tvb'S are just bullshit numbers and not police work. We have shootings nightly in my southside district and all the cool plainclothes incident cars are always down on 1 bag of weed arrests to keep their precious car..puke
