Not Felony Franks!?!
After all the hassle this guy went through with the aldercreature, the signage and attempting to get convicted individuals actual jobs:
Felony Franks manager Brian Smiley is not sure what he will do if the Near West Side hot dog stand where he has worked for nearly a year closes shop this weekend.
The owner of the restaurant — which has garnered international attention because of its criminally themed menu and its battle with the city over a sign advertising its name — says he will likely have to close his shop at 229 S. Western because of declining business and problems with a nearby liquor store.
Smiley, a felon who, like other workers there, was given a second chance by the owner, said Saturday he “might have to hit a few temp agencies.”
Hopefully, "hit a few temp agencies" doesn't mean what our sarcastic side thinks it might, because that sounds like a confession right there.

Very sad. At least the guys with a record who wanted a job could get one at this restaurant. Seems like the owner had good intentions. Having a liquor store nearby probably sealed his fate. The place was also paying taxes and fees to the city. Just another sign of the Chicago decline.
All bullshit about the employing of felons aside, this is fucked up. In a time where job creation is critical, we have aldermen playing games and fucking up this business because they don't agree with the name. Give me a fucking break! Assholes! You don't have to eat there if you don't want to and it's a legit business paying taxes, fees etc subtly practicing freedom of speech with what I think is clever name.....even though im one who wont eat there.
Amazing how the owner is bitching he has no business because of the unsavory characters who frequent the liquor store nearby. Kind of ironic, no?

Felony Franks can't compete with the liquor store and the "small businessmen". I guess the residents need to spend their money for a different, more demanding hunger. But don't despair Frank's owner. You saw a need and tried to fill it but certain people were not ready to support you. Thanks anyway and you will still be blessed for your efforts.
Most of these liquor stores in the shit neighborhoods also are gathering places for dopers and Gangsters. No doubt the restaurant was being shaken down for protection money. Areas like this don't have a Denny's or Pot Belly. Even McDonalds has a rough time staying afloat in all the garbage and carnage. Someone had the courage to start a business with most of the odds against him. Give the guy credit for trying. And for the Alderfools who tried to go after this owner for the name of his place GO FUCK YOURSELVES. Guess they didn't get an "envelope". Fucking do nothing corrupt self serving bastards. Any wonder this town is on the skids.
That place was surrounded, shitheads in their parking lot and on the sidewalk in front of it. No normal peron would run that gauntlet.
They ruin everything.

No irony at all. Guys working at Frank's realize that it's their last/only chance. They want to be there and they want to work.
The fact that the place is getting shut down tells you what's really up in this city - once you're down, stay down. No 2nd chance, no making anything better. Stay dependent on crime so the pols can get reelected to protect the rest of the city.
For the record, I've been to, and enjoyed, going to Frank's. The people I took there thought I was crazy. But fuck 'em. I'd rather help these guys out than have the workers/owners turn around and moneygram my order back to mexico.

One of the employees was bragging about spitting in the food they served the police, so needless to say, I found other, better placed to eat.
I'd argue the throngs of thuggish looking young gentleman perpetually occupying the sidewalks surrounding this joint was a bigger issue than any spat with an alderman. And sure, that liquor store draws quite the unsavory crowd. But really, I think the cheap apartments/condos/townhouses surrounding the area would be the reason there was such a continued crowd loitering around Felony Franks.
The name was clever. It's freedom of speech. It's not racist, sexist, creepy pedophile-ish, or any other derogatory thing that might be questionable to the point of intervention. It's just clever. It's advertising that they hire felons... so what? Smart business. These aldermen need to start actually doing WORK. Now they're working on a bill to ban teenagers from tanning beds. Is this the best use of their time? We need jobs and infrastructure repair. Crumbling parks understaffed. They can't stand up to block the mayor and all the TIF money scams but they can fight with hot dog stand owners. Crooks and cowards.
Eating establishments of all types have a very high failure rate. It does not take much to have one go bust. it seems like they are always on the edge.
Having an annoying business nearby could easily do it to any eatery.
This a proof that the city council hates private business and prefers, or would mandate if it could, that everyone be solely dependent upon the government for everything. Stalin's business model.
I ate at Felony Franks a few times once it opened. After the first few months it became the new dope spot. It'll be 2 AM and there will be 60 people on the corner walking back and forth to that liquor store.

I live near Felony Franks (say what you will) and have no sympathy whatsoever for Mr. Andrews. At one point, owners of the liquor store were complaining at CAPS meetings (none of which were attended by Mr. Andrews, to my knowledge) about people loitering at Felony Franks. Indeed, Felony Franks opened first, and with it came a bunch of gangbangers on the corner. At one point Mr. Andrews bragged to community members that he didn't NEED to call police--he brokered his own deals with the gangbangers living in St. Steven's.
The failure of his business was evryone's fault but his own, even though he picked a location in which no business had been able to survive. Sadly, the neighborhood will be stuck looking at that tasteless mural on the side of the building until someone else tries to make a go of it.

That place is probably haunted by many a shooting victim on Western and ODs in the alley over the years.
The shop was inundated with thugs or more "felons" hanging outside, I was afraid to go inside with all the riff-raf haning outside. There is no doubt in my mind the name brought these thugs standing al around with their female thugs, you don't know If they are going to ron you or what so you keep going.
