Speed Cameras Arriving

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel put out a call to companies interested in bidding for the city's speed-camera business, providing the first detailed look at how Chicago plans to operate the system.

Speed cameras can be installed in up to 300 areas in the city, which would allow the administration to cover nearly half of Chicago. The city intends to install a minimum of 25 cameras over the life of the contract, according to the request for proposals, and no more than 50 in the first year.

The city is looking to sign a five-year contract with a vendor. It's also willing to extend the contract to up to three two-year periods — making it a potentially lucrative long-term deal. Red-light cameras generated $69 million for the city in 2010, and speed cameras likely would increase ticket revenue considerably.
Driving taxpayers out of Chicago, one camera at a time.

Hilarious!

Six to twelve years to install just 300 cameras.. Not much of a hurry to "save the children" now is he?

Streets and sans don't have the qualifications to install these things so we need a clouted vendor to give a contract to?

Same shit. Just sign a 100 year parking meter like deal. You need the money Rahmy. Eff the future. By the time the bills come in you'll be long gone out of the country I'll wager.

Then they'd better double-up and install a "Crime Camera" to accompany each of these things.

Because I can say without equivocation that these revenue-generating picture-takers will be summarily destroyed or disabled under the cover of darkness by roving bands of fed-up taxpayers.

Myself included.

Ethics Board Tells Cook County Assessor To Fire Relatives

The Cook County ethics board has ordered the county's assessor to fire two of the three relatives who work in the government tax office.

Joe Berrios was elected in 2010 to run the office. The Chicago Sun-Times reports the ethics board determined Berrios violated his fiduciary duties as well as a prohibition on hiring relatives laid out in the county's ethics ordinance.

The report, signed by ethics board chairwoman Roseann Oliver, concluded the hiring by Berrios of his family members as county employees undermined the public trust.

The ethics board recommends Berrios fire his son, Joseph “Joey” Berrios, from his job as a residential analyst and his sister, Carmen Berrios, as director of taxpayer services.

WOW!

Someone forgot to tell the Ethics Board that Cook County Democrats are above the law!

Oh, well. I'm sure the relatives will land another well paid government job somewhere else with the state, county or city.

It's the (corrupt) Chicago Way, after all!

That is proof that cameras can't protect anyone.
Not that I want anyone to be injured, but I'll laugh at the first incident that occurs after these cameras are up.
To me.... Even ONE injury/death near the speeding cameras is enough to call the plan a failure, and the system should be dismantled to relieve the burden of taxpayers/voters.

I know it's not possable but it sure would be nice if the camera folks told rhammy to gfy & that they refuse to be part of the highway robbery of the "tax payers". That $$ would buy the kids a pair of shoes, maybe dinner on the table with the family instead of Dad never being able to sit down to dinner with the kids because DAD has to work the 2nd job to make ends meet. Then Dad gets hammered trying to hurry home & hit the shower before the job. It's all about the children afterall.

5: 16 am. These carmeras have NOTHING to do with po's not pulling people over, knuckle head! These cameras are being put in place to make rahmulus and his cronies Money. The cameras are going to be placed in a park /school area, where the tax base is basically all city employees. Bet 100 dollars, these cameras will be nowhere near U of C lab school, ravenswood school, washington park, etc. So please stop blaming po's for bullshit, such as this and get your head out of your ass. Read and listen, parking meters, skyway, street intersections, in the city, chicago park district parking and streets are all city assets being sold and not to the highest bidder. The conflict of interest is mind boggling. Sell the tax paying citizen and the city out, bit by bit, then get a job with the very company you sold any future city earnings too. Bet your life these cameras will always work, unlike the blue light, cta and gunfire detector cameras.

Does anyone really think the contract won't go to Redflex after the VERY close relationship between Rahm Emanuel, Mr. Goldner and Redflex which helped get him elected?
Millions of dollars that should stay in the Illinois economy will to to Redflex in Arizona, with some of those dollars going on to Australia. This is JUST what the Illinois economy needs at these tough times ... NOT !
The cameras will be located ONLY where the posted limit is set artificially low for the conditions, it is the only way the cameras are profitable. See the science on our website.

Seriously?

Pretty myopic view I'd say.

The cost of fines or the cost of increased travel times will have a trickle down effect throughout the economy. Anyone that has the ways or means to pass this cost onto others will do so. It's likely to show up in delivery and service cost everywhere.

I almost only ride my bike in the city, but when these cameras go up it will be a fun game to see how many of these get destroyed and by what implements

In the UK these cameras are despised and often get a stack of tires wrapped on em a burnt up, I don't see that happening here but maybe....drill a small hole and fill Er up with expanding foam?, jam some match sticks and super glue in the service locks? Rahm knows no ones going to put up with these. In his bid requirements the cameras must be able to detect pedestrians In any direction atleast 250ft away

Prediction, redflex wins bid for cameras

I will route myself around the cameras. Just like I do now. No problem side streets will need many pot holes fixed. Little Tommy Byrne will be busy after these cameras are in. These cameras will get you one way or the other. If you see you have 3 seconds to get past the red light then you speed up and they get you for speeding. If you dont speed up the guy behind you will rear end you and the guy in front of you will slam on the brakes and you slam him. Screwed either way. Start hitting the peoples pocket book Da Rahmmy will pay in the end. No White House for him!

Would love to see the city set up random roadblocks and check for license , registration and insurance. Can you imagine how many impounds and how many arrests would be made. How many guns and drugs recovered ? Most people would be amazed how many traffic violations our Chicago criminals accumulate since those are just more laws to ignore. The only hope this city has is to start coming down hard on all law breakers . I know you guys arrest them , our problems come after that with the State's Attorneys office and the judges and the courts .Criminals , especially repeat violent ones need to be in jail and any tools needed should be used , including no license , registration or insurance.

One can only wonder what it will take to disable these new devices.

We watched the red-light cameras at Fullerton and Kedzie with interest over a period of two years as locals systematically re-arranged the strobes and "re-aimed" the cameras to non-traffic points of interest.

After a couple of years of maintenance to correct the view of the lens and re-point the strobes on a regular basis the cameras suddenly went away.

Remember, re-focusing the area the lens sees, and re-aiming the strobes is not destruction or vandelism - it is technical support and good maintenance and technical support should always be provided for high-end electronic equipment.

No paint necessary, just a hoodie, a large blanked to cover the device during maintenance, and something to "loosen" it so it can be aimed to a more appropriate location.

Bird watching and some really interesting ATM machines come to mind off the top of my head . . .

I already buy everything (including gas) in the suburbs or on trips out of state, so it won't make a terrible difference now, but buying a car will sure be cheaper.

Too many problems to list here, and like in Atlas Shrugged..there's no beating the corruption. The best thing you can do is take your productivity elsewhere and let the chips fall where they may. Non-taxpayers can't afford anything, and so eventually they will starve or devolve into savagery without government help, and the government is broke so...
