This is amusing:
- As Navy Pier was emptying out a call came over for a large fight in the pier at Ben and Jerry's. A couple minutes later, as we were still making our way in, several people started running from the north/west area outside the pier claiming their was someone shooting there. Later, after the dust settled a white family from Iowa told us there was indeed three shots fired from a small caliber gun.
As a side note, the bike team got a gun with a head on the bike path off Ohio Street beach after the fireworks. That is the third gun pinch on the lakefront between Ohio and North Ave in the last month. Good job and stay safe.
Quote of the night: XO from 001 or 018 "officers need to activate the blue lights on their squads to give the illusion of more police presence". Next the department will hire Chris Angel for magic and illusion training at the academy.
The "illusion of more police presence." If that doesn't perfectly describe the "scarecrow policing" tactics being utilized by McFarmer and his kool-aid drinking cohorts, we don't know what is.
For the unaware, "scarecrow policing" is putting up a "scarecrow" or fixed post at a hotspot and hoping to scare away the ne'er-do-wells from the affected corner. It's usually a complete waste of time seeing as how the dope boys know we're stretched thin and they only have to wait us out for a few days, two weeks at most before they can go back to selling on their regular spots.

Almost 20 years ago I was probably working the slowest beat in the city.....Of course, I kept getting pulled from there, backing up the busiest beat in the sector.. Complaints came in that the residents never saw the police. So, in an attempt to make sure they knew I hadn't abandoned them, parking tickets were issued (remember those?) and most of the time when I responded to a call it was lights and/or siren. People knew I was there and working. Soon the complaints came in that I was harassing them and disturbing their quiet neighborhood. I was taken off that beat and put in a different sector. It was the beginning of illusionist policing - making people think you are there when you are not. I hate to see what is shortly going to happen without some constraints put on those who commit crime. We can arrest, but when the crime goes unpunished, it is encouraged to be committed again and again. When there is no penalty for bad behavior, there is no incentive to change the behavior. Unless a few judges, lawyers, politicians, rev'runs and their family members become real victims, I am afraid not much will change.

Absolutely 100% accurate. I was on zone4 and it was 100X that said that when the people were emptying out of Millennium and Grant park. He instructed all cars and foot posts on Michigan Ave to activate their lights for a higher police presence. 12th Street Beach and 31st Street beaches were Zoos.
In no way, shape, or form am I defending the Capt, but we have to work with what we have guys. We were clearly out outnumbered everywhere, so of it gave the appearance of more police in the sake of officer safety, then by all means. 001st Dist had a lot of thugs walking around too.

I agree with the new reorienting of 911 to shift a lot of the bullshit calls away from police service and towards 311. We are not Gooberville that can afford to send a uniform for a cat stuck in a tree.
All good and dandy, but the problem is, this MUST MUST go hand in hand with robust enforcement of charging people who make 'embellished' 911 calls.
We all have our 'regulars' who call 911 over nothing and it's been nice to get a break from them, but what I'm noticing is that they're now simply juicing their complaint to 911 dispatch, to make it sound more urgent so they get police rather than a 311 route. A regular "hey you kids get off my lawn" call turns into "mob with weapons" when that just isn't true.
We need to start writing bullshit 911 use, they need to follow through with it and these people need to pay fines or go to jail. As with anything else, you have a small percent, perhaps 5%, who use an inordinate amount of the resources. Address them, you address half the problem.
You want 100% dispatch, move to a rural community. Until then, you lie on that call and its bullshit when I get there, you're going to answer for it.
After the taste 46 PPOs are being assigned to 001 and 018 to give the illusion that we are hiring more police.
I take LSD everyday to work and I see more and more shitheads hanging around the lakefront all the time so hearing about shoots fired at Navy Pier doesn't shock me. The scary thing is we don't have enough police to protect the pier

Blame CAPS - I went to a CAPS meeting looking for resources to help deal with neighborhood BS and was told to call 911 on everything. When I was growing up someone had to be bleeding or on fire to call 911, per my Patrolman dad...

I was thinking today about what has changed in the police dept. since crime has started to spike.
Decline probably began when city failed to retain enough police.
Decline continued with the hiring of Jtard who had no experience running an actual police department, came in, called us 'fatsos', and decimated the command staff immediately.
Decline is now at epic proportions because of the hiring of a carpetbagger insisting on using ridiculous NYC policies such as 'stop and frisk'. Also the almost immediate disbanding of units.
To top it all off, we have 9.5 lying about putting more police on the street.
Now we have a storm as bad as the Chicago drought. Now they say they will hire 400-500 more police--what happened to McStupid saying we had enough police? Could that be the problem? Not enough police. A big fat DUH.
The disbanding of detective areas is a failure of epic proportions. They want us in the districts, but our supervisors are miles away. Total disconnect. Bosses totally agree and doing the best they can.
Compstat wastes everyone's time. If McPilgrim could hear what EVERYONE says about him, he'd jump off the Sears tower.
Everyone is talking about just waiting out this asshole, just like the last one.

Yes, anyone receiving any type of government aid is eligible to receive a free trac phone with 300 minutes per month. I believe it includes texting. Additional minutes can be purchased. Money comes from taxes on phone bills meant to help provide service to rural communities. Phones are meant for emergencies. 300 minutes a month seems mighty generous for "emergencies". Remember also that all low income families with a student in CPS gets internet for $9.99 per month. I wouldn't be surprised if the govt. starts providing flat screen tvs soon due to the deaths happening when unwatched children pull the tube tvs down on top of themselves. First of all they can not just violate the contract. Duty availability is pensionable so they have to pay it,do not listen to what some know it all lifetime patrolmen is telling you.
Small wonder nobody pulls out of the way for mars lights anymore. Too much BS, with cars sitting next to them in traffic at a red light with the roof lights on.
Also, maybe asshole XO should review the ILCS regarding the allowed use of emergency equipment.

It was ALSO in the contract that the city had to pay patrolmen, Sgts. and Lts. out of grade pay when they performed the duties of the next higher rank for over a minimum of 2 hrs. ask the Lts. when was the last time they received an out-of-grade check.

Hyde Park is still one of the safest neighborhoods in the City..even safer than many neighborhoods in 001, 018, 017 and even 016. I've been a policeman for 24 years, lived there most of my adult life, and I wouldn't live anywhere else in Chicago.
The solution to the entire problem is a wholesale transfer of personnel. Every police officer who works in 019 now transferred to 007, then 020 to 006, make a swap along with their commanders and staff. Can do this with a fe other districts.

Since you need help obviously here are some considerations: Independence Day is a federal holiday, Black History Month is not a holiday and I assure you we don't "get" anything for it. There are other ethnic recognition months anyway, just no other as well known.

The best part is, cellphones don't even need to be active to call 9-1-1, all they have to do is be in working order. OEMC takes 9-1-1 calls from non-active cellphones all the time, so WHY are we paying for 300 minutes/month???
In one TV commercial, there's a woman asking "What happens if I have an emergency outside my home?" as a justification for this service.
Outside your home? Like at the grocery store or something? I dare say that if you experience an emergency, an store employee will probably dial 9-1-1 for you. There are also many of us out there WHO PAY FOR OUR OWN CELLPHONE EACH MONTH. One of us will call for you.

Our City lakefront has slowly turned to shit. The North end beaches are loaded with beer drinking ignorant illegals who tear up the grass playing soccer. The Gold Coast beaches attract yuppies and scumbag gang members who look to claim territory for the summer. Finally the beaches to the south are not even worth going to unless you have a death wish. Hey Rahm why not sell the beaches and have us pay to use them. We already have to pay to park there. Why not charge a fee in order to use the lakefront? This will keep most of the scumbags away. This City is screwed if we re-elect this Mayor.

The soccer groups from Humboldt Park have invaded Wilson Park on the northwest side every weekend. These goofs block the alley and have chased residents out of their neighborhood park. I can't wait until retirement when I can leave Chicago for good.

I live in Chicago, USA - not Kabul, A'stan or Fallujah, Iraq. No one wants to see or feel a 'police' state where there are flashing emergency lights on every other block, just to assuage the poor planning of bosses or appease the purse strings of city budget. The bitch of it is, the very people they want us to do this for are the people who will complain about the police being 'too aggressive'. And here we are, being told to put hands on '50 people' a night and write more contact cards just to bump the numbers - while the bosses are having us watch training videos on legitimacy and mutual trust. yeah, they are really gonna trust us while we grab them and their kids 3 times a night to write bogus contact cards and drive around their streets all night with blue lights on like the KGB.
Chgo could get those weird stand-up mirrors that are used on movie sets. They have several sides and make it appear as though one person is six or eight people. Problem solved.
Rumor has it a giant pot will be placed on the roof of 35th and Michigan. Any and all meritorious supervisors with no idea of the purpose of a spreadsheet or even how to spell spreadsheet are encouraged to come to headquarters and stir the pot with their unceasing, useless, inane minutiae.
