Holiday Casualties
It just keeps getting better and better for Rahm and his pet supernintendo. Granted, it was a holiday, but it was a Wednesday, too - midweek:
- Five men were killed and at least 21 were wounded in separate shootings from Wednesday morning to early Thursday.
And it doesn't end after the holiday ended. From our comment section:
- It is 0600 and the animals are still roaming the lakefront in Hyde Park. Promontory Point is loaded up.
The police in 002 had not control last night on the lakefront! - SCC, 010 is still out of control. We had over 3,000 people in Douglas Park, spilling onto Roosevelt, shutting down major roads and challenging the police all night. At least one taser deployment and a gun recovered.
- ....at least twenty arrested for various indiscretions in 001 and 018. Another gun recovered along the lakefront, this time at 700 N L.S.D. by a gang team.
And now, WBBM is posting that the Police Department has issued a "community alert" for people venturing downtown:
- Police are warning people after a series of overnight downtown robberies over the past two weeks.
The robberies took place between June 20 and 30.
The victims were attacked while walking on the sidewalk and their property forcibly taken by a group of young men.
- Descriptions of the offenders vary, but they have been described as black males in their late teens to early 20s, police said.

I can't remember the last time I was downtown for fun or business. It's becoming increasingly irrelevant. The once mighty anchor stores are more like branches of the suburban stores these days. The sales tax is atrocious. Parking is expensive and difficult. And now add dangerous to it.
This is a rare weekend when my wife and I are both off. We thought about spending a night downtown and seeing a show. Instead, we'll be at much more civilized Lincolnshire and Ravinia.
Regarding the incident in 010, the 3rd watch watched that thing grow out of control and did nothing about it. The supervisors are so micromanaged by Cynthia White and Maria that they can't even drive around and supervise, not that any of them go north of Cermak anyway. Not to mention that most of the POs do not go north of Cermak.
How sad that I had to be downtown for an appointment a few weeks ago while off duty and had to load up as if I was going to war. I brought pretty much everything I would have on my duty belt in case I encountered a group of ghetto rat kids. This is why I never go anywhere in the city unless it's a necessity. Dinners, movies, shopping is all done far, far away in another county.
Pet superintendo...sounds like a video game...but who really wins.

Just checked the compstat report and it lists shooting incidents, but nothing about number of people shot. It has to be much bigger as many of our shooting incidents consist of multiple people shot. Anyone have that comparison?

002 doesn't have any cars on the beach or anywhere near them. They are all sitting on corners on silly static posts, 002 isn't that busy but it has it's moments. All of their rapids something usually in the range of 7 to 9 cars are all stuck on corners and in tiny boxes. They couldn't do anything about the beaches if they wanted to
If this case was the other way around, that is groups of white youth roaming the black business community robbing and beating black people, eric holder the us attorney and the justice dept would be launching a full-scale investigation of civil rights violations. Cop's 3-year-old son shot at home with handgun

In what police describe as a tragic accident, the 3-year-old son of a San Jose, Calif., police officer was shot and killed Wednesday evening at his home in Gilroy. The boy's death from his wounds was confirmed late Thursday.
The Gilroy Dispatch newspaper reported that three other children were inside the home at the time of the incident, indicating this might have happened during a play date.
Police won't say who pulled the trigger of the handgun, but reports say the boy either shot himself or another child
accidentally fired the gun.

The only incident in Douglas park originated in 011 and ended in Douglas park. The taser deployment was also unrelated to Douglas park, except that the offender fled into Douglas from 011. No streets were shut down and it was clear by 1130. Not bad for a fourth of July.

On that note 011 was pretty slow up until about 2200. East bound Chicago Ave buses were packed though. Never thought it was would be pleasant to work the 4th in the Ghetto.

Ha, right. What I saw on TV was girl reporters getting another free lunch doing "news" on Trendy Artisan Doughnuts or something.
I live at Walton and Dewitt. Was up at around 12:30 a.m. after the 4th fireworks and heard commotion outside. Group of "youths" walking east on Walton to LSD, some on the sidewalk, some down the middle of the street -- hooting and hollering like it was the middle of the day. I used to feel safe walking my dog late at night over to Lakeshore park by the MCA. Now I don't even feel safe in broad daylight. This will destroy this city for tourism if it doesn't get better.
Not a cop yet(4 family members are CPD), but I never realized how truly bad this city is until this year. I don't even go downtown much anymore. If I do, it's for a dinner every once in awhile and then I get in the car and leave. No more strolls down michigan ave or going to Navy Pier. Concealed carry really needs to pass so the good citizens at least have a fighting chance against these animals. I've always wanted to be on CPD since I was a little kid, but as I get older I'm not so sure I even want to make a lateral to CPD after being hired elsewhere first. 1)how the department has been treating you guys and 2)I'm not sure I want to live in this city my whole life. I'm not so sure how much longer it will be until this city has zero "good" neighborhoods left.

Usually, people who micromanage are the ones who know what they are doing and don't trust their subordinates to do it properly so they micromanage. The good old days of the police putting fear into the rats are long gone. It has nothing to do with the 5 yoj coppers. They are cuffed by this liberal city. I work in 010 on 3rd Watch. I ride around with about 2 rapids and one 06 car all night momentarily moving 100's off (weekends they be much more than that) these of corners, lots (Go Lo Gas), 16th Street, Douglas Blvd, 15th, 19th Pulaski, Cermak and Kolin, etc..... We drive away, they come back. The Beat cars are busy with the baby daddy hit me for no reason domestics, PH2 is helping spotting open hydrants from the air (Thank you for tying up Zone 10 btw), and about 2 hours into the tour, We lose one of the two rapids to that "Box" mission (b.s.detail with no purpose) for the rest of the night. Case reporting automated Contacts, takes cars into 010 all night because they have to have a computer that works. Somewhere in that time they have to eat. How effective can we be? For what we have, we do pretty good I think. We are making the best of it but I fear we may be slowly losing any type of control. Keep backing each other up and stick together. We dont have any relief in sight. Lets be safe out there.... As for micro managing? The bosses ask for activity, only we know what we see and dont see...... Does anyone know where I can get the Sport Hold Gel in a 55 Gallon drum? I go thru it soo fast, I need to buy it in bulk... You V05 "Wheel Gunner know-it-alls" should explain to us all how you used to never have crime when you ran the streets and actually did Police work....lol!!!

If it is somehow important to you, then go, but the only person that will hear your statement is you.
After 25+ years on the job, you haven't figured out that nobody from the top on down gives a fat flying pig's ass whether you go or stay?
Do whatever is best for you and your family, but don't short yourself and them because you want to make some sort of a statement. But if you are ready and properly prepared, both emotionally and financially, to pull the pin, then hit the road and enjoy your life!
