Media Undercount

  • Nine people are dead and 22 others -- including a 3-year-old boy -- have been wounded in shootings throughout the city from Friday night to Sunday night.

That's actually an impressive ratio of dead to wounded considering the numbers of past weeks.

But we got word from some people in 011. Seems they had ten people shot Monday night and two of them died. Tuesday afternoon, there were another 3 shot, one a Park District employee in the area of Division and Pulaski. We can't seem to find any media reports regarding all but one of those shootings.

Then the Tribune covers a quadruple shooting in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood:

  • Four teens were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood late this afternoon, authorities said.

The men and boys, ages 14 to 19, were shot near 60th Street and Rockwell Avenue about 5:38 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs...

And another shooting in 011:

  • A few minutes earlier, a man and a woman were shot in the 3800 block of West Augusta Boulevard, Zala said. About 5:33 p.m., a 34-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks, and a 21-year-old man suffered a graze wound, in a drive-by shooting.
So 011 is playing catch up with the rest of the city, with 3 dead and around 15 wounded between Sunday and Tuesday afternoon, but you wouldn't know it from the media reports. Might it be the racism of lowered expectations - as in the media expects the west and south sides to run red with blood, so why report it? Or is News Affairs skipping call outs to the media to make it look like crime is down (which it isn't)?

Three shot in 019 (uptown part old 023) tonight, around 7:30 or so. Victims #1 and #2 hit in the legs, but victim #3 got hit in the back. It sounded like #3 may not make it.

I thougt the gun turn in would elminate this violence, since Rahm belives in postvism, in other words, outside factor direct the behavior of criminals - not their own actions.

Just a citizen here, but today seems like an extremely violent day also. 12 shootings today, those of course are all media reported. Don't know if there were any others besides those 12. One of which tonight was a 10 year old girl who was shot in the abdomen.

The city is once again telling the News what they beleive the citizens of this city want to hear. I'm sure after tomorrow night the death toll will be much greater.

I will have to say the city is doing it's job when it comes to notifying the News and informing them of the crime in Chicago.
This place is a joke and to say I'm proud to be CPD is not in my vocabulary anymore. Thank you Rahm and McCarthy

If 12:11 a.m. is right, then it just goes to show the leadership in 010 has failed. Replace the Commander, Executive Officer, and ESPECIALLY the Tactical Lieutenant. All those extra guys on tact: how is th Lt. using them? One baggers?

Request to the media, Please keep it all quiet. Try not to give the public any reason to worry. If they dont hear about it then everything is safe.

Got a question for you coppers. When I worked at City News in the 1980s, we manned the press room at 11th and State. I want to say it was on the 11th floor but maybe it was seven, I don't remember. Anyway, every hour or so we would walk down to the First Deputy Superintendent's office and look over the desk at a typewriter with a piece of paper in it. On that paper was a log of every major incident that happened in the city. We could be pretty sure we weren't missing anything, even if the detective bosses at one of the areas decided not to tell our beat people about something. (That commonly happened in 2 and 5, where we didn't usually station people because the HQs were too far away, and 1, which viewed itself as sort of above everybody else. Information flowed freely from what was then 3, 4, and 6.). Is there still a place where this information gets logged reasonably promptly, or where a reporter or member of the public could go to see what the body count is, and where would that be?

The media didn't know about all the shootings in 011 cause Lt Andrews wasn't there to get in front of the cameras to tell them about it. The good Lt is too busy taking the summer off while all the blue shirts are denied time. I'm sure everyone in 011 is happy he's not there but they deserve to take the time they've earned too.

Yes, the media doesn't want ANY reality leaked out. All they talk about is the weather and the poor people without air conditioning. Why can't we have a police channel where officers are stationed to report the REAL news????? Can you imagine what that would be like? The city would empty out in a month.

SOUNDS LIKE HQ IS SCARED SHITLESS ABOUT THE VIOLENCE THAT IS GONNA HAPPEN ON FOURTH... since NO ONE signed up for their violence reduction plan on the 4th (yea, who is going to work their day off on the 4th), they are sending all the day tac teams to 7 and 10th dist tonight... suppose to drive personal cars down, and have crown hat, no cargo pants. RUMOR IS they will be on foot posts in parks, in those two districts

Great! Finally the 023rd District lifers have a reason to compare Uptown to the south and west sides! You know, cause out west it's "just a bunch of vacant lots!" You know who you are!

"Media undercount" -- they are stuck alternating between affected outrage and genuine embarassment.

It's their "Great Society," their "Sanctuary City." All that they can do is to call for more of that which causes the problems in the first place.

...as more and more ordinary people see the truth around them every day and become increasingly alienated...

Ofc. reported here that M1 struck a girl in the face with a lock yesterday, fighting at North Avenue beach at 7:30 AM.

Beaches remain open, TV news is filled with exercise fads and fashion tips and gourmet barbecuing hints from people who just coincidentally are promoting a book they want to sell...

Within 24 hrs ,2JUL-3Jul, 011 had 16 shot and 3 dead. But not much in the news about that. That's usually what the whole city has for a weekend and 011 had it on a Monday and Tuesday.

When did this dept get filled with so many kids with such a huge sense of entitlement just for showing up to work. Not even doing work, just showing up. If this was McDonalds most of you would have been fired along time ago.

there is NO doubt in my mind
that "certain individuals"
Do call the media and cajole threaten beg for them to ethier don't say it, or hold off on saying it, or "put a little "spin on it" it can be done to a point
first off i myself and joe/joan/blow citizens are not in the police dept so any reports we hear are accepted at face value
we dont know any different
the difference is now
SCC, DSLC steps in and says this is how it really is and really throws a monkey wrench into a the works
remeber the wildings?
never once did they mention it was black on white crime until SCC, DSLC stepped in
then it was only mentioned but glazed over
bt when it was white on black or what have you
then it was HATE crime and every jerk was all over it
like shortshanks and j-fled trying to to shut you down
tiny dancer and Mcstreetlights would love to do the same
please keep them honest for the public 's sake , other we feel like "mushrooms"
kept in the dark and fed "B/S" all the time

As long as one person believes the politicians, the problems will never be honestly addressed and solved.
