OEMC Crashes
Officials with the city's Office of Emergency and Management Communications confirmed that its state-of-the-art computer aided dispatch system, which routes emergency calls to police officers in the field unexpectedly crashed late Monday night.
Technicians were at the OEMC's Near West Side facility this morning trying to repair the system, but city officials still hadn't determined what caused the system crash, nor provided a time frame for when it would be repaired.
"The exact cause remains to be determined," said Delores Robinson, a spokesman for the OEMC.In the meanwhile, dispatchers were manually directing officers to emergency calls through their radios, Robinson said.
Despite the abruptness of the system failure, service for emergency calls haven't been impacted, she said.
"The problem has not had an impact on response times at all. We're getting all calls to the officers, assisting them through radio for now," Robinson said.
"State-of-the-what-now?" OEMC hasn't been state-of-the-art for quite some time now. Nothing has been significantly upgraded in years, the dispatch stations are buggy as hell - and when we say "buggy" we mean both computer-wise and critter-infested.

First the runway lights go out at Midway the other night and no one knows why yet and then now this? Could this be the work of some outside "group" doing a trail run for a bigger incident?
J L is there now putting his special touch in their operation.
OEMC better get used to it crashing. Just like CPD programs that crash on a daily basis.
Who does this guy know ??
I'm just gonna throw this out there for thought. The east coast storm last week is also being blamed for knocking out 911 systems in Arlington County and Fairfax County Virginia, as well as a few specific towns in the area. Everybody knows Chicago crashes from time to time, but this seems a bit weird. I'm wondering if something else is going on.
where does all the tax on our telephone bills go , patronage jobs?
The City of Chicago doesn't maintain or replace anything until it completely stops working or literally blows up. Period. And all that cool cop technology you heard of that is being used in the field-merely a fantasy to CPD. We've never met it.
OEMC is repaired? They used bubble gum, paper clips and masking tape on aged equipment to keep it limping along. 911 will crash again.
Response times haven't been affected because it occured on a Monday night at 10pm. After noon on July 3rd through the entire 4th of July have been busy as hell year after year. Hope they fix it soon. On a side note. Before the city changed LEADS the dispatchers were still able to run names if the oemc crashed. This new LEADS system obviously has some flaws. "State of the art". Not so much.
The CFD side crashes regulary...sometimes for us to 12 hours!
One of the great mysteries of Chicago History will be how Pooperman, who shot from Patrolman to Exempt, managed to sell the "system" upon which the CPD depends, when that System was inferior from the start. One has to wonder if there were kick-backs, or some personal relationship involved in his choosing a system that was bad from the start.
Did anybody else notice that I-Clear and the dispatch system went down on the same day that the NATO5 assholes had court?
Why is it that when democrats run stuff, it tends to run like a third world operation? Oh, that's right. They're communists, and communists love the third world. Soon we'll be eating dogs like our president.
"...The problem has not had an impact on response times at all. We're getting all calls to the officers, assisting them through radio ..."

Makes one question the value of this so-called state of art system any person of average intelligence would ponder? Surely something must be impacted else why does it exist?
The Pilgrim police did not need any stinking computers.
Where's the original speeches touting all the things that this state of the art system was going to enable and why does losing the system not affect anything if it was doing them?
"The exact cause remains to be determined," said Delores Robinson, a spokesman for the OEMC."
You have to pay a "spokesman" to come out the door for half a minute and provide non-information?
The janitor could have told us that.
How much per year is this Delores costing us?
Talk about unnecessary positions that should be eliminated.
We all have been around for oemc failure. This aint a real story.
This never was state of the art, it just looked nice.
The guys who knew what they were doing were overrulled by some of Daley's relatives who spent a lot more cash on wasted items.
How is a 15+ year old technology state-of-the-art?
THE CLEAR SYSTEM CIRCA 2002, No worries Luberman still gets his royalty check for that joke he sold the city.
Does that mean I can't get an event number?? AWWWWWW man.....No event number means it didn't happen, according to CONSTAT process...Guesse I just gotta go home since we didn't do anything with no activity last night. Haw haw!!!
Nothing but the best for chicago. This city provides us with the worst of the worst technology. I would love for the city to be somewhat close to what other city's provide their officers and then maybe we can do our jobs a little better.

Naw, hot weather, rain storms, electrical storms, etc. cause a lot of problems. I had the UPS on my home computer beeping Friday afternoon when that storm clipped us. Power line disturbances and stuff. It has a "surge suppressor," recommended.
THe railroad signal maintainers always have a great time; that signal gear out there gets hot and acts up. The equipment shelters are A/C but it's still not always enough. Same thing. Crossing gates going up and down for no reason...
Extreme conditions find you your weak spots.
I mean, look at City Hall, huh?
>grin<
Gotta love that Schenkel. He was a nothing hack (but a MARINE) when he was ADS of the Academy, and damned if Hillard didn't throw his sorry ass back
in our faces (and paid big $$ by our tax dollars)
again. Can't say it was unexpected.
Heat and computer equipment don't mix boys and girls. Knowing how the city operates the a/c probably crashed after months of "making it work" and now someone is making 2x time to fix it instead of paying someone to actually maintain anything. Idiots.
OEMC crashed on Monday? How about this past Saturday from about 3 am till about 10 am. No name checks, vehicle inquires, jobs and their addresses over the computer, no event numbers and RD numbers starting with HV005.... Guess they were able to keep that one quiet.

Add this to the secret midnight destruction of Meigs and I think it's time to call in the feds.....

I would HOPE that both systems (at least PCAD)is not conntected to the internet, but rather intranet only.
But I'll bet I'm wrong.
Impossible! We have Jonathan Lewin running all our computer info systems. OEMC cannot crash. Every Silicon Valley firm is trying to lure him away with huge contract offers, 7 digit pay, stock options, his own private island complete with a stable of cabana boys. The only reason we still have him is his selfless dedication to truth, justice and the American way. When Luberman was called to rescue another city department a blue ribbon panel searched for a suitable successor. In all of Greewich Village, Fire Island and Key West they couldn't find a better man to take his seat then Lewin. Dammit, he's the Liberace of digital technology.
I'm a little worried to see this. Last week, the lights at Midway went out and no one knew why. This week, the emergency dispatch computer goes out and no one knows why.
Are these tests of a computer virus attack that might open up the city to other types of attack?
Was listening to both Radioman911 and another police scanner and the CFD's computer were down at the same time OEMC's was, which was also interesting
The 911 system WAS state-of-the-art back in 1995 and Andy Shaw called it the "Taj Mahal of Technology". He said the city spent too much - but in reality, it was a showcase.
It was designed and built well, but when you put political hacks in to manage it and dumb call takers who can't speak English what do you expect?
No technology runs by itself and you need qualified people to manage it, let alone, add something new to it.
Just like merit promotions, putting in people who don't have a clue about technology, doesn't make for a good CPD.

Yeah, they're on the same system.

You do know OEMC is the office of emergency management, right? As in, the 911 center? As in, the same location as the police dispatchers? It's not 'interesting'; it's the same place.
