Marine Unit Rescues
We're thinking of just starting a separate set of blog entries covering the Marine Unit exploits:
Six people were rescued from Lake Michigan Wednesday afternoon after the 25-foot boat they were on sank off Navy Pier.
Police Marine Unit crews rescued all six from the water after the power boat sank just east of the Navy Pier locks at 5:21 p.m., police News Affairs [...] said, citing preliminary information.
Everyone was pulled to safety and no one had to be taken to an area hospital...
Well done. Can you believe that the city has openly speculated about disbanding the Marine Unit on numerous occasions? This year alone we can recall 20 or 30 rescues that would have been deaths otherwise.

Mauer's Navy...
I honestly - have "man-love" for the marine unit. I wish I could be like them someday.
"Can you believe that the city has openly speculated about disbanding the Marine Unit on numerous occasions?"
Yes. The powers that be are simpletons.
Because of the manpower shortage that they've created, they want to put every last copper in a car, but the need for the Marine Unit has made itself obvious on numerous occasions.
This is particularly true since the Coast Guard moved their air unit to Traverse City, Michigan. A short flight across the lake? Yes, but when you're holding on for dear life, rescue can't come fast enough.
Fortunately a lot of really rich & powerful people (have you seen some of the boats at Burnham??) have been able to keep the Marine Unit intact.
The Marine Unit should be disbanded. There is Sleazefire to fund, after all. Why should police be out there rescuing people when conflict resolution specialists (read former/current gang members) be paid a cool million in tax dollars? This is Chicago. The voters gathered at so called churches on the West and South sides have spoken! Em, hmm! Pay bitches!
They're kinda like Hasselhoff and "Baywatch"!!!! Nice job, guys.
Good work!
One less link gold card member at 31st street beach.
Hey SCC, when TRU and MSF were making arrests every day where was there "shout outs" for basically doing their jobs??? They still got disbanded.
" Marine unit saves yet more people"..........well, that's what they are supposed to do!!!! And its not like they are saving people every day so maybe not disband them but DEFINETLY dump half of them!
Remember.....for every one person who is saved by the Marine Unit there are 25 marine unit officers that get paid to sleep on the boat doing NOTHING for months!!!
That's including the 62 kayakers capsized in the storm the other day.

Capsized? No, just paddled to the edge and helped from the kayaks.
Congrats to the Marine Unit.
But . . .
Love this excerpt from the Trib article about 7 people being saved in the Lake today. It is parenting at it's best:
At 5:29 p.m., police were called to the beachfront on the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive for a report of three people in the water after they had been on a raft, said Mirabelli. The three were reported as a mother, father and their 4-year-old son, Mirabelli said.
After personnel arrived, they rescued the child and began searching for the boy's parents, Mirabelli said. The boy told rescuers that his parents had swum to shore, Mirabelli said.
The parents were located on shore and reunited with the boy, who was in good condtion, Mirabelli said.

CFD has boats. We don't need the police marine unit. Send them back to the watch to help with shortages on the street.
Since the majority of boaters are wealthy taxpayers,we need the marine unit to rescue them when they go out and drink too much. Should the rich ,drunken sailors perish in our frigid waters who would pay the freight ? Way to go Security D !!!!
Marine Unit guys are not only rescuing people regularly, but constantly training for such events. This is along with all of their other duties including law enforcement on 31 miles of lakefront and more miles on the river system, security details for special events, dignitary protection, assisting vessels in distress with tows, scuba diving to recover dead bodies and evidence, maintaining and cleaning equipment and boats, picking up CFD divers from their chopper who jump in most often very dangerously and for no reason . . . just to name a few. So, if you think it's so easy, then join us next time around and we'll see if you can handle diving in zero visibility trying to rescue someone or being out in 15foot waves when its cold and dark out trying to rescue someone. By the way, CFD Chief Dornocher formally suggested to the city that the Marine Unit be disbanded in order for him and his boys to take over, what a fucking jagoff. Why dont they stick to their vehicles on land and let us handle the waterways. If the city really wants to save money, they should get rid of CFD 688 and E2 which are the two fire boats which do basically nothing. 688 has very little activity as all they do is rescue and E2 is the fire fighting boat which hasnt done anything in years. By the way, the city bought E2 brand new for 8.5mil, a complete waste of money. The working guys on CFD are normal like us except for a few jagoffs like us, but our bosses arent trying to take over their job like CFD bosses are trying to take ove the Marine Unit. When our helicopter started up again a few years back, CFD treated our guys like shit, shoving them in a corner, not letting them use the kitchen, and not letting them use their wheeled assist to get the chopper out . . . so Dorknob and Fox and anyone else trying to get rid of the Marine Unit can go fuck themselves.
I heard a rumor that aqua man works in the marine unit.
That's alright they wanna get rid of the arson detectives and the bomb squad as well. Takes more than a year to get people onto the launch pad in order to start training to fill those positions and currently at 0.
Much like anything going roll the dice and hope nothing happens. When something bad does happen the politicos will just blame the beleaguered.
Marine guys are great at theif jobs very professional Y'all be safe out there.
Its called redundancy. The CFD Marine Unit does the same thing. The City does not need two seperate Marine Units. Combine these units as one and filter the remaining people back to CFD and CPD.

Don't be such a little girl! I was in the Navy E-5 rank spec ops, but was a rescue swimmer, yep we rested on the "boats" but you know what asshole? While we rested we responded and swam distances and saved many so don't knock it punk till your man enough to try it!
Yes, let's disband every unit. Well all sit in the patrol division fighting crime. You guys in MSF and Tru did a great job. There, you fuckin happy. Good PR is good PR for the Police Dept. Doesn't matter where or who. Stop hating so much.
What's amazing is The marine unit only have 30 people total.
Most days they only have 3-4 guys working each shift , they do a lot with less.
Sign a old thankful lifeguard
It's not redundancy. CFD can only rescue, whereas CPD Marine Unit does rescue and everything else as explaind above. CFD should go especially since CPD has been out there for decades and CFD has been out there for only two years and only because Daley hates the popo and likes the water wasters
Good Work Guys!

Go drown yourself.
And no, I don't own a boat but have had use of Marine Unit over the years.

Hey, Jagoff....check out this video from the late 60's/early 70's....CFD Helicopter has been around for more than two years......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mde-p_756D8
Go back to downloading porn before you open your mouth on something you obviously know nothing about....
Use common sense, morons! A police officer can operate a fire extinguisher, but a fireman cannot issue anovs, arrest a boater for DUI, protect the waterways during a dignitary visit, recover weapons or evidence from the water and inventory them, and the list goes on and on. CFD should pack it up.
Instead of dumping the Marine Unit, perhaps you should think about upgrading it like the Texas Department of Public Safety did:
http://www.ksat.com/news/DPS-gunboats-prepare-to-patrol-border-waters/-/478452/15375808/-/pqvu6xz/-/index.html
Thirty-five feet, nine hundred horsepower, and six M240 7.62mm machineguns. Imagine the chilling effect that could have on yutes from "da 'hood" who want to cause trouble on the beach! "Apocalypse Now - Da Chicago Way!"
ECS
hey fuckface, I'm obviously talking about CFD688 only being here for two years, they only have rescue jobs whereas the CPD Marine Unit has so much more. But in your stupidity, you bring up a good point, the CFD chopper 671 is also a complete waste. They dont use the winch, and do nothing that is productive. So, go back to doing nothing, what you do best.
I can't tell you how many times we get a boat that breaks down or needs a tow which is pretty routine. CFD loves to send up that stupid money wasting helo to hover over the boat and scare the living shit out of the poor boater and his family that only needs a tow to safe harbor, let alone the 4 to 6 pieces of fire apparratus that show up on land and watch, but can't do anything besides almost cause numerous accidents on the way there. They should handle the shore and let the marine unit handle the water. These guys love showboating for the media, I mean I've really seen them high five each other after recovering a body out of the water! In fact their chief just dove in to save what he thought was a person at 31st on the 4th , but it was a large rock like the one on his shoulders!
Don't forget to include that there has never been an invasion by the Canadian Navy since the Marine Unit was formed.
I could say as a former lifeguard, that has worked all the beaches from north ave to Pratt, that in all my years I was always glad to see CPD marine unit, when I called fr help.
Most of the bangers didnt know there were laws to obey while they are at the beach, and all of them did not know there was a police boat. They all looked like they could shit a brick when they saw the police on boats. Pull up on them.
It was fun watching what happens when you flip off a cop on land and dare him to come in the water to get him, then when the banger turns around and see two CPD fully suited combat divers with guns deploy from a boat to grab him....it was priceless.
On another note we really never had much use for the fire dept. only the EMS ambulance. After we pulled one out.
Ask the 42nd ward alderman if the city needs the waterway police?
And he'll tell you 100 percent needed.
22% of his constituents complaints and concerns are regarding waterfront or river related issues.
And I can tell you as someone who knows, the fire dept is not listed on any of the service request paperwork that a alderman has, aside from fire inspectors
So untill the cfd has the powers of arrest, both units are needed.
