Mob Beating Arrests
- Sources say at least 28 people were arrested overnight for a series of violent attacks across the city, including 11 arrested for beating a man leaving the July 4th fireworks at Navy Pier.
Among the victims was college student Brandon Trebbien, who was beaten and hit in the face by a group of juveniles near Dearborn and Huron streets just after 11 p.m. Wednesday night. Trebbien was leaving the city’s July 4th fireworks show at Navy Pier, which had just ended a short time before the attack.
After beating Trebbien, the assailants ran off, but police caught 11 suspects.
One of the teens allegedly resisted arrest, and punched and kicked several officers as he was taken into custody.
And bold? These assholes are becoming unbelievably bold:
According to a police report, the same teens were darting in and out of traffic just before the attack, causing a commotion about a block away. Police officers who were directing traffic told them to stop repeatedly.
Then, members of the group dared each other to carry out a random attack, as police were nearby.
“They still were just bold enough to come up and start doing that,” Trebbien said.
“It didn’t even phase [sic] them” that police were standing right there, he added.
Of course not. They know we're spread thin and the more of them there are, the better their chances of getting away clean. No one is going to remember every single face when they get jumped by twenty, especially if they're knocked silly.

And let's not forget the UNREPORTED crime. A friend's (suburban) nephew got separated from his buddies after a Cubs game. He left the bar alone, and was attacked walking to his car in Wrigleyville.
He was slammed in the back of the head, kicked and punched to the ground, and relieved of (shocking, I know) his phone and his wallet.
To date, he is refusing to report the crime and he didn't seek medical attention, though he estimates he was passed out on the ground and bleeding for at least an hour. No need to comment on the idiocy of this; friends and family have already lectured and pleaded, but he won't make a report.
Granted, he and his friends will probably never come back to the city for games or concerts, but you have to wonder how many other crimes like this happen and 911 never even gets a chance to log the incident.

There is no accountablility for anyone's actions any longer.
What are the Courts doning? It would be a great service to the public if Second City Cop began to follow these cases through the Court System and give the final dispositions and the names of the Judges responsible for final decisions. The victim will remember the incident for the rest of his life, and may even suffer from the injuries sustained for the rest of his life. But what about the judges who contributed to all this? I am retired from CPD and remember how detectives never got back to P.O.s and the cases it seems just evaporated. So next election we voted for the same Madigan backed hack judges. Accountability should not be limited to police, what happens in court after these horrific and savage acts of random violence is the 500 lb elephant that everyone is ignoring.
Until the powers that be and the parents/communities start refusing to accept such behavior and continuing to pass blame then nothing will change. My mother used to say to me when I got in trouble, "don't pass the buck" meaning don't try and lesson what you did by passing blame to someone else. The "its not my fault" mentality that we have allowed to thrive is truly taking over. There is a slew of excuses out there that sound like authentic "beyond my control" conditions that we dismiss the thought of personal choices, responsibility and consequences for our actions. Just like excuses will be made to soften the reasons for these thugs acting as such. Children, teenagers and adults know right from wrong. A long time ago I was lucky enough to get a note and signature from Michael Jordan at a pre-game signing that said "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time." Personal responsibility needs to be brought bacmk and driven home to the youth of today. Only then will these communities begin to turn around.

YOU make the report. You have the info, go give it to the 19th District police. Tell them the victim is still goofy in the head from head injury. A report will be enough to get the detectives out to interview him. These thugs are all over the neighborhood. If your friend won't report it, then you do it for him.
He can always decline to prosecute if an offender is caught.

I too once loved this city and my job as a P.O. but it didn't take long to see that I was just feeding a revolving door system. The criminal courts here are a joke. These thugs keep getting released to re-offend again and again. How many times do you see arrestee's with pages and pages of criminal history and they are still on the streets. The one's that actually go to jail only serve half of their time if that as our inept Gov. continues to release inmates at an alarming rate.
I have watched this department deteriorate due to the purging of bosses who knew how to handle these thugs and weren't afraid to act. Now we have political appointee's, bought and paid for running the show and as we see, they collectively are a complete failure.
This city and this Mayor and Supt. have been playing a budgetary game with the CPD budget and have allowed the number of police officers to dwindle to very dangerous levels, as a result they are losing a large number of the rank and file literally and figuratively.
I read all of the comments here that pit the old-timers vs the hair gels and have to laugh at how personal some of you get. It goes with the territory, when I was coming up, I was referred to as a rookie my first five years all the while the old timers attempted to give me good advise, that I refused to listen to. Twenty five years later I sit realizing that much of what they tried to tell me was the truth. I worked my ass off, to the point of stupidity thinking I had a fair shot at promotional opportunities or at least a descent unit spot but of course they were right, you need the hook up and I wasn't about to surrender my last shred of dignity by kissing ass to get something in return.
I may sound bitter but I'm not really, I had a good partner and we managed to have a lot of fun in between the insanity of it all. We were fortunate to work the streets at a time where we ran the streets instead of the streets running us and that's not a knock it is just the way it once was, it's not anymore.
I feel for the younger officers today, and even more sorry for the law abiding citizens, what a complete mess this city has become. Stay Safe

8-9 years ago transferring from blue red in the tunnel me and a bud saw one of those honor roll students beating/harassing a bum trying to sleep in the tunnel; we told him to stop & yelled for security...want to know what he said, "my ancestors were slaves...i can do whatever i want." That's the mentality you're dealing with. Keep in mind the bum was also black. My response, "you remember any of their names?" He continued saying how he was gonna kick our ass...security, black as well...stood at the end of the tunnel and did nothing. So, we decided to leave the situation, assuming security was only going to intervene when two white boys started fighting an honor roll student.
My advice to the civilian: carry a blade, brassknuckles, pepperspray...get some steel toe boots(cooling off next week). Stab upward or if you prefer to use fists keep hitting after the first punch, don't stop. Or even carry a glass bottle, hammer, screwdriver. Old soccer hooligan trick is roll several pages of newspaper then fold into a blackjack. Be safe out there.
I miss the days of handing out a lil candy. This s@#t didnt happen...
I blame this all on the Amish.
Concealed Carry is the solution. The problem will only stop when we start sending them back to Englewood in body bags.

I am not sure if vigilantism is the right term. It connotes attacking people for resembling other people, etc. It has some bad baggage. No need or justification for that sort of thing; the real thugs will make themselves known.
I think "aggressive reaction to attack" is more what we want to be thinking of.
When I am on the street, I am generally carrying something (not a firearm) to lay a nice surprise on an attacker if I get to deploy it. I also practice rapidly deploying it. I am convinced that the mere display of such willingness to defend deterred an attack on the CTA last summer.
I have read (on SCC, probably) that the ghetto thugs say that they attack white people because "white people don't fight back." WDF? How did that happen?
Maybe its the difference between my blue-collar upbringing and third-generation lawyers, but I come from a long line of people who do not lie back and beg for mercy if attacked. If friends or loved ones are threatened, we basically go berserker.
Even w/o concealed carry, a lot more berserker defense would probably help deter some of the shit slopping over into nicer areas.

I'd bet that Morton's in Schaumburg serves just as good of a steak as Morton's downtown - so why bother?
Bernie Getz happens every day. I carry my issue firearm in the city and have been confronted several times in the south loop and chinatown area when out shopping.
Last time, out with the wife, three teens came out of an alley and one of them asked if i would give them our money and jewelry or if i can handle the pain if getting stabbed. I replied, im sure it wont hurt as much as the gunshots from my pistol. I lift my shirt and they bolted like gazelles. I am certain this goes on every day. I cant be the only one. I decided long time ago. If i stop a civilian with a gun. A foid card and no wants or warrants, i let it slide. If they dont have a mag in the gun i tell them to put the mag in but dont chamber a round

The Thug animals can smell the blood in the water. Chicago is finished. Downtown and the Near North is already in fear and will decline. Tourist will stay away and Detroit will have a new Sister City....Chicago.
These aren't the only robberies and beatings, just the reported ones. Several people that I know personally have been roughed up on the way home from work at a river north restaurant. All female.
One woman was heading home alone, and got jumped and robbed. Two others were heading home and were attacked. They fought him off.
Talking to other restaurant workers in the area, this is becoming pretty common.

I have always thought that reason should be applied and that one should not overreact, yes I have been a racially sensitive anti-gun liberal for most of my adult life. Since I have discovered this site and I have been listening to the Police radio scanner I am willing to admit that I have been dead wrong. No amount of love, reason, or social programming can change the "Lord of the Flies" state we now find ourselves in. I am in favor of granting responsible citizens the ability to openly carry or conceal and carry. I would also hope that the Mayor would see the light and allocate as much funding as is needed to increase manpower and equip the police with whatever they need to bring order back to the streets.

I'm a white woman who went to a museum on the 4th. Got panhandled by a Ceasefire guy outside the museum on the way to the blue line and gave him a penny I found. After I got on the L, got solicited by another guy. Tossed him the other penny I found. No begging on the CTA, right? Asshat tried to argue with me, so I told him that was all the spare change I had, which was true. Then I took my phone out. He thought I was going to call the cops (which was what I wanted him to think). Couple of stops later, another shithead gets on the train. This one has a milk crate and a sign, so I introduce the two. They both think I'm nuts and get off at the next stop.
Cameras don't arrest shitheads, police officers do. Hire more police and let the police officers we have do their jobs!

Bear spray isn't a real viable option unless you get them at a distance. Also watch the wind direction.
I have a papper foam that's good for about 10 feet and can be used in an enclosed area without as much of a collateral effect.

11:08, the reason I went with bear spray is that the smaller close range option won't work against a larger group of thugs. I want to be able to hit many at once and then back off, get away. I need to hit a big area and I'm not afraid of inflicting collateral damage.

A T-shirt means nothing. You can find any kind of T-shirt you want at the Salvation Army. "SECURITY," "STAFF," etc. The bustouts love those.
I knew one young woman who wore nothing but these "marathon" T-shirts from all over the country. As city-unhealthy as they get -- she didn't run. She just collected these shirts.
Illegal aliens with no English wear any clothing the church group gives them. They have no idea what the printing on there means. I've stopped and checked, just for fun. "Oh, are you in the Kenilworth Rolls-Royce Owner's Club too?"

Actually, law firms won't go near a vast preponderance of occurrences. Let's not further encourage the rabble.
People die in accidents all the time, let alone if they are deliberately running out into traffic with police there ordering them to stop.
Remember the college-educated idiots who died on the expressways? One was doing grafitti, another was riding his zoomy bicycle against traffic.
I have seen them sitting and laying in the middle of busy streets.
Someone might not see them. Simple fact.
Run out from between cars. Thud. Run out against a red light. Thud.
They do try, though. One drowned in the lake, and babymama was making noises that Lake Michigan should have been fenced off. There has been more than one of these. Went nowhere.

You ask why no hate crime. If you handle a job that you determine is a hate crime, report it as so.
If you make an arrest for a hate crime seek charges. If the ASA declines call the Deputy.
If a supervisor tells you not to report an incident as a hate crime, tell him/her to go fuck himself/herself.
If you can't or won't do these things then don't bitch.
all i know is that , as a citizen, if i could feel very confident that an officer would 'use his discretion' when deciding how to deal with my self-defensive actions towards my Amish attacker, then i would feel way less 'inhibited' when that self-defense moment-of-truth arrives for me sometime (soon ?)..... i would absolutely love to be able to feel confident that you guys in blue will 'have my back' so-to-say, when the shtf . I'll be able to ,swing that ASP 21" baton a bit more 'freely' when that little nagging doubt is erased from the back of my mind.
