Tourism Suffering?

  • Move over San Francisco and watch out New York — Chicago is now the second best city in the U.S. and Canada, according to Travel+Leisure magazine.

It was a good piece of news to kick off the official launch of the city’s new tourism organization, “Choose Chicago,” but as CBS 2′s Mai Martinez reports, the recognition comes at a time when Chicago is also capturing national attention for a much more ominous distinction.

Chicago has garnered national headlines as it has seen a major spike in homicides this year, with at least 250 through the end of June – up 36 percent compared to the same time period this year.

Since Tuesday alone, there have been at least seven fatal shootings, and 41 non-fatal shootings in the city.

We have no idea how much or what was offered by the "Choose Chicago" organization, but it must have been sizable to garner the number two spot in a magazine with a monthly circulation of 400,000.

Where is Rahm Emanuel? Lots of shootings in and around the 4th of July. Is he on vacation or is he at the Taste of Chicago?

Maybe Putin will choose Chicago?

After all that's the place where NATO made the decision to put that missile shield up in his back yard that he so despises.

Oh wait..lookie...here he comes now.

Putin’s July 4th Message

Russian nuclear-capable bombers intercepted near West Coast in second U.S. air defense zone intrusion in two weeks

Two Russian strategic nuclear bombers entered the U.S. air defense zone near the Pacific coast on Wednesday and were met by U.S. interceptor jets, defense officials told the Free Beacon.

It was the second time Moscow dispatched nuclear-capable bombers into the 200-mile zone surrounding U.S. territory in the past two weeks.

An earlier intrusion by two Tu-95 Bear H bombers took place near Alaska as part of arctic war games that a Russian military spokesman said included simulated attacks on “enemy” air defenses and strategic facilities.

A defense official said the Pacific coast intrusion came close to the U.S. coast but did not enter the 12-mile area that the U.S. military considers sovereign airspace.

The bomber flights near the Pacific and earlier flights near Alaska appear to be signs Moscow is practicing the targeting of its long-range air-launched cruise missiles on two strategic missile defense sites, one at Fort Greely, Alaska and a second site at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

In May, Russian Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, said during a Moscow conference that because missile defense systems are destabilizing, “A decision on pre-emptive use of the attack weapons available will be made when the situation worsens.” The comments highlighted Russian opposition to planned deployments of U.S. missile defense interceptors and sensors in Europe

Gee you would think that Russian bombers entering our ADZ would be front page news wouldn't ya?

Yet we're sold it's all okay because they did not bust the 12 mile limit.

Everyone feel safer now?

The NATO people from Russia are spreading the tourism word to come to Chicago we're suppose to think. HA.

FYI=

"Travel & Leisure Magazine" will print and showcase anything if the price is right.

They are not like the folks at "Consumer Reports" that actually give an un-biased report of the service or product rendered!

Looks like the city PAID them well?

I think you got the name wrong. It's not Choose Chicago it's "Shoot Chicago" and it is a new video game out.

You try to get from one venue (Navy Pier) to the next (Nieman Marcus) given only so many bullets to shoot at oncoming targets. You encounter roves of teen-agers as well as the typical lone-wolf mugger.

"Shoot Chicago" - the best way to visit Chicago - armed and only in a virtual mode.

NYC had 185 homicides through June 24th. And about 2 1/2 times the population. Maybe McCarthy should go back there for some training in crime reduction. Just for about 9 years (when I retire).

Let me guess...Rahm and his professional organizers and donators are behind this. Just like they are behind the group running the anti union education reform ads.
This Rahm is a slick bastard who thinks he's better than everyone else.

The population of New York City (8,175,133) is over THREE times larger than Chicago (2,695,598).

For population comparison purposes, Chicago is slightly larger than Brooklyn (2,504,700), New York City's most populous borough.

Measured alone, Brooklyn would be the fourth most populous city in the nation after New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Are you still feeling that pain of white man’s guilt even after voting for Barack Obama and alienating all your friends and family by defending his every crime and usurpation of the Constitution?

Suffer no longer!

Choose Chicago!

Wonder our streets and have that guilt beaten right out of you by a mob of angry black teenagers!

I have YUPPIE out of state cousin who is booking downtown Chicago hotel with teen kids to 'enjoy' the city as a tourist and bike the lakefront.
I warned them that it can be is dangerous and to BEWARE of MOB/THUG looking groups of black youth.
This relative has not talked to me since, obviously thinking me to be some sort of Archie Bunker type who doesn't like people who don't look like me.
Maybe they'll learn I'm NOT such a jerk if the MOB catches up to them on the MAG mile or as their out for an evening stroll along the lakefront. I hope that doesn't happen but if it does - that is NOW the CLEAR and PRESENT DANGER all over Chicago.
My advice is simple >
Things have changed for the worse >
DO NOT CHOOSE CHICAGO

Second best city for what? The Martinez piece was just pure fluff. They interview a couple of suburbanites at the Bean on a weekday at noon and they say they feel safe. Now CBS can say they covered the issue.

I've lived in other parts of the country and Chicago but more specifically Illinois are jokes. Visiting New York last summer there sure weren't a bunch wild monkeys running loose. NYC won't put up with that shit.

Isn't it about time The State Dept. issued a travel warning to our little Rahm kingdom whose is turning a blind eye and misappropriating city funds to Ceasefire criminals.

Travel Warnings are issued when long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable lead the State Department to recommend that Americans avoid or consider the risk of travel to that country.

Tourism and The Taste. This may sound dated but please be patient. Jane Byrne's original Chicagofest featured the top line performers of the day. Frank Sinatra, The Spinners, Helen Reddy, Andy Gibb, George Clinton, Waylon Jennings Crystal Gayle. Something for everyone on stages big and small. A million people came, exceeding all expectations. Now we get old Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson, and Cuties Death Cab and Bentley Diercks. And the genius people wonder why no one is buying tickets? I guess I'll just get some ribs at Leon's or a Rainbow Cone. Oh! Too Bad! They're not there either.

"I drove my Zip Car back to the City around 5 am to beat traffic, a time when the Gold Coast was abuzz with sunlight and people starting their day. I parked the Zip Car in front of my apartment building to drop off some items; locked it; and left the windows open only about 4 inches. My purse was out of plain view on the floor. In the 30 seconds that my back was turned to the car, some perp decided he was entitled to my purse. I turn around to see a man contorting his arm to try to reach through the 4 inches of space and steal my purse."

Nice, huh?

The Sun Times did a big story on the violence today, no surprise since the NY Times, al Jazeera and other outside outlets are reporting it. City Hall can no longer hide the truth about the out of control violence. Rahm the great is going to need a miracle. It's too late to hire enough police, the ones they announced will barely be enough to keep up with the retirements. The current rank and file is so demoralized from anti police sentiment, lawsuits, threats to their pensions and livelihoods, courts that continue to release those they arrest, many have simply given up.
This city is lost, crime is everywhere, corruption is everywhere, no wonder Fitzgerald is stepping down. Ineffective US Attorney, Illinois Attorney General, City Inspector General, Judges, Alderman, County Board, Mayor, what an absolute embarrassment this place has become.

Unless you live in Chicago/Illinois, then a "magazine" is a periodical you read, which come in a variety of topics.

What if people were really told the truth. TRUTH, Chicago is not safe over 90 shootings 19 killings since 4 July.
TRUTH, large group of black youths roam tourist areas and terrorize people. No so called Black leaders leading marches here. TRUTH, beaches are not safe, Gangs claim turf, fight, shoot, terrorize. TRUTH, media will not report for fear of TRUTH. TRUTH, Obamacare is a tax and socialism. TRUTH, All government assistance is socialism. TRUTH, politicians, in Chicago, are connected with organized crime, Gang membership, communist and social groups. If people were told these things and names were told, programs etc. do you think anything would change. Do you really?

This had to be a "bought" story. I have had numerous coworkers cancel plans to come to Chicago this summer because of the $$ and crime-these are people who grew up in DC (aka Chocolate City) and said they felt safer in DC during their crack/murder days.
Went home last week, and couldn't get over how depressed people in Chicago look. It really made me sad.
Went to NYC the other day and felt totally safe walking around late at night because there was a cop everywhere I walked. Same in DC on any given night-even in the 'hood.
Stay safe and thank you for protecting me the many years I lived in Chicago.
