Taste on the Verge of Failure
The revenue-strapped City of Chicago is for the first time charging admission for the best seats at Taste of Chicago main-stage concerts, but sales have been slow so far.
With Taste scheduled to start next week, nearly two-thirds of the $25 pavilion seats remain available to see Jennifer Hudson (Wednesday), Death Cab for Cutie (Thursday), Michael Franti (July 13), Chaka Khan (July 14) and Dierks Bentley (July 15) at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park. Of 15,000 pavilion seats (3,000 per concert), 5,637 had been sold as of Thursday, the city reports.
Taste’s duration was cut in half this year as part of budget belt-tightening by the city, which has lost money on summer festivals in recent years.
The kool-aid is flowing hot and heavy at City Hall though:
“All in all, for a first-time venture, we're pleased with the response thus far,” said city spokesman Cindy Gatziolis. “The idea was to create a new experience at Taste - a guaranteed seat in the pavilion.”
She expects sales to pick up in the next week because “we know that a lot of people wait until about a week out to make a decision on whether or not they are coming to the festival.”

I predict that like the CTA 3 day bus passes, that the city was unwilling or unable to sell, that were highly discounted and given to Groupon just a short time ago (to keep Groupon a float imo) that there will be a similar Groupon Taste of Chicago special offer.
Why did the city have to sell those CTA bus passes thru Groupon? Twas a nice backdoor bailout for Groupon if you ask me.

Why would I want to go to the Taste of Chicago? So I can be harassed and attacked?
Until the city has enough police officers to secure the downtown area I'm keeping everyone I love (and their money) off the CTA, off the lakefront and away from downtown. Crime is preventing us from lots of things we usually do. We won't go to Sox games because we don't want to take the red line or have to walk the tunnel from the red to the blue.

I stopped going to this mess a few years ago, after getting sick (along with about 500 other people) after eating tainted hummus from Pars Cove. One year later is when it really went to shit! Tourist narrowly missed getting shot, while sitting in their hotel room, the bucket boys fighting like animals, people getting shot at Michigan & Randolph, etc. Bring back Venetian Night! That was a classy event and there were very few, if any, thugs around....

I actually knew two bosses long retired who were sent by Mayor Byrne to Milwaukee to study their Fest and this was the basis of Chicago's Taste.(Cmdr. Bob Dart & Lt. Healy) Now note, they only use about 7 to 10 P.O.s to run Milwaukee Fest, and the reason is they keep problems out by charging admission. So the first Taste of Chgo. "CHARGED ADMISSION"!(cops and firefighters each got two free tickets) Then "Revend" Jackson protested and claimed charging admission was "Rachist"(the CH is invisible) and so to this day it is free.The "Legacy" of Daley and Jackson will live on in the memories of those who will be beaten, robbed or sexually assaulted because they visited the "Taste". YOU DON'T NEED TO TASTE THE TASTE TO REALIZE IT TASTES BAD! The last few years have produced judges less likely to punish offenders in batteries that do not maim or permanently disable victims, so Youth Mobs have become more violent. Anyone who allows their loved ones to attend Taste of Chicago is putting their loved ones at risk. Every Restaurant that is at Taste will provide you with a much better dining experience if you visit them at their permanent location. Just a thought, years ago, a culture we identified as Democrates from the West side and South Side would on a frequent basis take the subway to Ohare airport, this particular group of Democrates were not going to the airport for th purpose,of a well deserved vacation but were going to the airport to steal luggage and whatever other preditor behavior was available. The CPD would have details at the airport station and not allow the Democrates to enter the airport. This,worked and crime was down at the airport. From a suburban reader: Sorry but will not be going there this year. The $25 is NOT the problem. I spend that much to park my car in Chicago without thinking twice about it. The city is far too dangerous. We will not go where we are prey for street crime. If you want us back, you pass concealed carry in this state and the more savy among us will risk your urban culture rather than be victims of it. Until then, we will eat at the fine restaurants in many suburbs and attend cultural events at the many venues in safer locations. I don't want to become a victim of Tamekas son nor do I want to kill Tamekas son defending myself from a beating by eleven friends of her son while carrying a firearm illegally for my protection and the protection of my wife. Its really that simple.

Think about that next time you want raises. It takes a LOT of money to keep Chicago afloat, plus another 30% overhead needed for all the extra patronage and clout jobs (read that merit promotions)

Tourists planned vacations around the 4th and the Taste. As usual chi broke something and then tried to fix it. I want them to fail just so again everyone else will know this city is f*ckd!!!

One young girl from Ireland -- all of 5'1", very promising student -- who was savagely beaten here two years ago is still in a wheelchair being cared for by her parents, hardly able to move or speak. It doesn't take long for people to find new things to do and leave the past behind. More people are finding fun in the burbs and at neighborhood fests. Once they realize they're having more fun and that they don't need to come to the city for it anymore, they're gone for good.
Yep the media is promoting the Rahm script alright. The headline reads:
"Chicago hotels see June boom after NATO setback in May"
But let me ask you something. Do you think that perhaps any so-called boom in June is a result of people pushing off their May travel plans because of NATO? If that turns out to be the case this so-called 2% boom will fade fast.
Then, you have to wonder if they're using the crime is down statistics handbook in throwing out numbers.
For example the story begins with this:
"The city saw its 2011 hotel occupancy rate rise 2.5 percentage points, to 71.7 percent. Don Welsh, head of the city's convention bureau, thinks hotels are on pace for "a slight bump" beyond that level this year. But busting through the pre-recession rate of 74.4 percent may take longer."
And a little bit further down we read:
"Hotels saw a 92.3 percent occupancy rate through June 23, a gain of 3.2 percentage points over a year earlier.
This provided some balm for May, when the downtown hotels lost nearly two percentage points over the previous year, coming in with an occupancy rate of 77.9 percent. Nationwide, hotels saw a 2.2 percentage point gain in the May occupancy."

Time will tell. I have my doubts.
This should be the last year for the taste since it is wrought with violence and the city loses money on it every year. They should also cancel the P.R. Fest, Cinco De Mayo, the Irish Parade, the Gay and Lesbian parade and every other large event that are costing taxpayers. In this economy, governments should be cutting nonsense like this rather than pensions and it would be nice if they were to hire more police to help combat the out of control violence.
It is time that someone take control, before this city is completely lost and we are very close to that now. The overtime initiative is not enough, we are so short it is ridiculous. Have tact teams sit on dope spots, kill their profits until they make it clear to their homies that the violence downtown stops. Start enhanced traffic strategy on the weekends. Ticket, tow, and write DUI's, start taking their property and see how they like it. Utilize the bike units citywide to work downtown and the lakefront. Why your at it, utilize the hundreds of bodies in narcotics to work as decoys instead of spending their idle time at Homan, very few of those teams actually do the majority of work there. The department utilized the downtown camera's during NATO, and they were able to follow the protesters all over the loop. Why are we not monitoring those camera's and utilizing them to catch bands of thugs attacking innocent victims? If you need to put officers at OEMC in order to do it then do it, we wasted good money installing this crap and we know it works to some extent so why not use it. I know, I know, I don't have all the answers but I could not possibly do worse than the current administration who thought paying a million dollars in extortion money to gang bangers would work. Those bangers are laughing all the way to the bank.

Yep the city giving back $125 million dollars of their income when they already are deep in debt.
Can you imagine giving back like half of your paycheck to your employer (because he/she is the one that creates your job) and then complaining to the mortgage company that you can't pay your bills and that they need to cut their loan rate?

Not any more. Exorbitant parking, high prices due to high taxes, stupidly high sales taxes plus so much more. After he was arrested he told the officers, who documented it in the case report, the he was a Ceasefire "interrupter" and that he gets paid $100.00 a day to keep the peace.
We are blowing a million dollars so these "interrupters" can make ready-rock and triple their (our) investment?

The Chicago Public Schools just revealed that they give teachers who are assualted paid leave for post traumatic stress disorder. The teachers all sent to the same psychiatrist for evalulation and she declares they all have PTSD. The leave has run as high as 2 YEARS with full pay and benefits. Every teacher that has gone to see this same shrink has been declared to have PTSD. Now, I am retired. But you guys and gals still working should bitch when they are trying to take your medical leave away and some school teacher who gets slapped gets a two year leave. Wow!

You are correct. As it now stands with our pension, you must have been born on or before Friday-31 December 1954 and be retired for one year to be eligible for the non-compounded 3% COLA.

By going to Taste of Chicago or any other event you are not putting yourself in any more danger than you are getting behind the wheel of a car on any given day.

Chicago is much to DANGEROUS to visit.
