Chicago Layoffs

With Rahm touting moving jobs from the 'burbs to Chicago, even though all the positions are filled and no one actually out-of-work gets put to work, we are amused when stories like this pop up:
  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital confirmed Wednesday that it has laid off 230 employees over the last month as part of an effort to reduce its cost structure by a quarter by 2017.

The Streeterville health system, which has about 7,000 employees, said in a statement that 52 of those who lost their positions have found new jobs, most at the hospital. It said several others are being considered for roughly 200 openings.

A spokeswoman said the hospital has cut jobs each of the past several years after annual reviews of its operations conducted amid budget discussions.
200 openings that might very well be beyond the capacity of the laid-off employees' skills ability. But Rahm is going to tout janitorial staff moving from one locale to another as a sign of an economic turnaround.

Did they decrease their increase and end up with a net zero gain or loss? Because that's how it's done here and in New York.

Communists tell the funniest lies.

How can Northwestern lay off 200 people, then say they have 'found jobs' elsewhere in the Northwestern Hospital system?

Is this more of that fuzzy math stuff?

NW is going to go broke if they keep seeing an increase in either shitheads or good citizens with GSW's.

A common ploy in industry is to transfer all of the problem employees to one division and then shut the whole thing down. It saves EEO complaints etc.

Sounds like the powers that be at Northwestern took the same math classes as Rahm & McStreetlights!

The hospital had, at one time, 7000 employees. They have layed off many and then hired outside contractors to do the same work. The layed off employees were then hired by the outside contractors ( in most cases) at a lower salary. Most of their support departments, janitors, engineers, security, disposal, food service, etc. are not employees of the hospital, but employees of private contractors. If you are ever admitted to that hospital, do not bring any valuables at all, no cash or wallets or expensive electronics because you will be ripped off. People prowl the building daily looking for victims. Even the pick pockets work the elevators and food service areas and enter patients rooms.

Rahm lives in a world of sound bites, poses and photo ops. The key is to make him answer for gaps between these, because he can't.

It means that their position was eliminated, but there were other open positions available elsewhere (in another department) that the person was qualified for. This is quite common in the business world, a person whose position is eliminated is encouraged to find a position with another department so that the company doesn't end up paying severance.

Smoke-mirrors. Getting rid of senior people by eliminating their jobs. Than hiring them back to do the same job and more, for less money and no seniority. Just different job title. That's Chicago values in action. Rahm's kind of town.

Hospital mass layoffs double again

August 8, 2012 | By Karen M. Cheung

Like May, the number of mass layoffs at hospitals in June doubled from the previous month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. June saw 20 massive layoffs ("mass layoffs" defined as 50 or more people losing their jobs at one place in a single day), affecting 1,172 people,

American Medical News reported. That figure is nearly double than the 11 mass layoffs in May and 5 layoffs in April.

In related news, Westchester Medical Center in New York is laying off 100 workers, including patient care technicians and clerks, the Associated Press reported.

Westchester Medical Center has layed off more than 600 people during the past year. BLS data

Yessir. Do the math.

8,000 Rahmallah healthcare jobs over the next 8 years. Why that's 1,000 a year if they are spread out evenly.

But pay no attention to the fact that over 1,172 health care workers (over a one year supply) have already lost their jobs in the last two months alone...

You should remember that the next time you hear the political propaganda about skill shortages!

The company I work for is not having official layoffs, as of now, but certain departments are not replacing employees who leave(either quit or retire).

Th company's downstate office is expanding and replacing the departing employees.

Still not sure why my company opened an office downstate instead of Indiana for example

Yes, I know how it's done. In other words, they didn't lay off 200 people. They reassigned them.

Yeah, employees being laid off, do more with less, and OBAMACARE kicking in full gear in 2014. You think it's bad now waiting 12 hours in the ER to see a doctor, wait 'til 2014.

the health care industry is doing the same thing every other business has had to do the last two or three decades.

government is not immune either. it is just a matter of time until the cutbacks hit city departments as well. most of the suburbs have already done what had to be done, or are in the process of doing so.

for those of you who are complaining about your pensions, the reality is that fully funding public employee pensions is mostly going to come out of the back pockets of existing employees because there just is no place else for it to come from.
