Heh

Someone in New Jersey isn't happy with cameras:
  • Someone with a gun is apparently settling scores with those red-light traffic cameras so reviled by New Jersey motorists.

Two of the devices were shot in Newark today, police said.

Red-light cameras at the intersections of Broad and Murray streets and Broad Street and Raymond Boulevard were given the same treatment as that ill-fated hotel room TV that enraged Elvis.

As you might see in the photograph from the linked story, the shots went through the side of the cameras housing, effectively disabling the camera and shielding the identity of the vandal from the camera's own eye.

For shame!

This isn't the first time traffic cameras have come to grief from unset citizens. Look what they do in Britain:

  • Passing motorists applauded as a pair of speed cameras in Hampshire, UK met with a fiery end in the past week. Burning tires were used to end automated ticketing efforts on Marine Parade West in Lee-on-the-Solent and on Gosport Road in Fareham. Local officials noted public approval of the vigilante efforts.

"There were whoops of delight coming from the cars, but I'm afraid that's the culture we live in today," Fareham Borough Council member Dennis Steadman told the Hampshire Daily Echo newspaper.
That one happened a few years back, but the rage continues to this day. A quick search reveals constant attacks on the machines that are viewed solely as a money grab by politicians and are proven to increase the number of accidents at most intersections rather than promote any sort of safety. Naughty citizens.

Hopefully this will become a widespread trend in this country. Let our government and the thieves who run these bandit cameras know we don't want them. After so many are destroyed it won't be profitable to keep them going.

Are the yellow lights timed shorter when a camera is present vs. the lights without cameras?

Remember, when only the government has cameras, you won't be able to film your girlfriend!

Never noticed a shorter yellow at an intersection with a red-light camera myself, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised.

I would note that "speed cameras" in the UK, at least in London, don't just zap you if you pass 'em going faster than X mph. What they do is, they catch your plate number at point A, and then again at point B, and if it took you less than X time to go Y distance from A to B, they assume you were speeding and send you a citation in the mail.

Chicago's yellow lights are the shortest allowed by federal law. Look it up.

Isn't it amazing that we as Americans are such sheep? Yet we claim to the rest of the world how brave and freedom loving we are. For example, whenever our government and leaders do something that is clearly against the rule of common sense, we just go along with it.

When the red light cameras went up. We just went along with it. When the parking meters went up, I thought for sure people or groups were going to vandalize them and put them out of commission. It never happened. Only once along Armitage and Kildare did I observe one of those parking meter boxes completely torn out (probably by a pick up truck because I saw a large chain on the ground).

For those idiots who claim "well if you are such a tough guy then why don't you do it". I have done my share of things to fight off the menacing red light cameras and those private parking meter boxes. Completely moral and ethical too btw.

Not in Chicago, pretty much every yellow is 3 seconds (which is already very short)

Why gunfire or arson, always risky, someone could get hurt.

Just some paint over the lens.

Same basic result, but probably not even a felony...

They are not supposed to be, but several of these red light camera companies have been caught dropping the yellow light time down to up revenues. Been some successful lawsuits about this issue causing accidents.

If you read the story the state suspended all red light cameras because the amber lights were too short of a time and did not give motorists time to get through intersection. How about Chicago with the shortest amber light time in the state. When that light turns amber you better slam on your brakes or you will get a ticket.

I don't know how they are going to protect the solar cells that run the parking meters. They're right on top.

I wonder if they're genuine Solyndras.

There was aother scam like this about the rechargeable batteries used with those solar cells, another zillon absconded with by someone.

I mean, think a minute about these things. Someone got that money. They don't rake it into a pile and burn it.

In my suburb they have them along a major state route at intersections with only left turn on green arrow ONLY. Now, since (I would assume) the red light cameras are there to protect you from getting T-boned, and the turn on green arrow ONLY prevents that scenario, what is the point??

And the brochure that the Village has on hand to explain the need for them shows a kid on a side street boarding a school bus.

So it's all about the children.

The meter boxes are solar powered by a fragile solar panel on top of the box. One could ride a bicycle down the sidewalk with a little ball peen hammer and do a lot of expensive damage. Just sayin.

The only people that hate these cameras are working people that pay the fines and are afraid of the legal repercussions of them destroying the cameras.

Expensive gas, more and more bike lanes, parking meters that are more like armed robbers, expensive plates and city stickers, $100 parking tickets, speeding ticket cameras by schools with speeding ticket cameras on regular streets next, stop signs everywhere, red lights every 2 blocks, lots of traffic, you can't get 3 miles in this city in less than half an hour. I want to keep living here, why? I am beyond disgusted with the victims of the Pilgrims, the taxes and politicians. I vote and it doesn't matter. the same fucks that oppress us keep getting reelected. There is so much wrong here I could just scream and they keep trying to MAKE IT WORSE!

If you were paying attention, most in Chicago aren't, but the politicians here ADMIRE the way things get done in China. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know, you're too stupid to be an American.

Did you know that a moderately powerful laser can damage a video camera? Unlike a firearm, a laser is quiet and lacks a projectile, which could potentially injure or kill someone if one were to miss. Personal eye protection is a must, as well as exercising caution with regards to the location of other people; lasers may damage eye sight, as well as cameras.

It's been years since the gunshot cameras were functional. They didn't properly filter out ambient noise and were taken out of service long ago. We discuss that fact here every few months or so.
