Fewer Tickets? Duh!

No time for nonsense:
  • Chicago Police officers who have their hands full with rising homicides and other violent crime are on pace to write 15 percent fewer parking tickets in 2012, but revenues are up, thanks to dunning deadbeats, dramatically higher fines and a fundamental shift to outside ticket-writers.

Through July 31, police officers wrote 513,413 parking tickets, or 73,344-a-month, a rate that would translate into 880,128 tickets for the year if it continues. That’s down 15 percent from the 86,202-a-month and 1.034 million tickets written last year and a 20 percent drop from 2010.

This is surprising why? We're down almost 2,000 cops from peak numbers a few years ago. Calls for service are up, regardless of what the crime numbers show. "More with less" is killing any sort of proactive policing and the time due policies are contributing to a morale death spiral that doesn't really lend itself to feeling like help out the political apparatus that's fucking us every day.

When they say "outside ticket writers" what they actually mean is that parking meter outfit that was given the 99 year contract gift that keeps on giving right?

Nice main stream media job of running cover for the downtown Tower of Bulls--t.

Does ticket revenue being up mean the cities revenue is going up too as is being implied...or does the "outside ticket writing" operation skim off their profits first and so most of the revenue goes directly to them?

Read "Catface"'s comment at 9:46 yesterday, best explanation of how everyone important was warned that the Feds were taping Blago.

Chase is interesting as he was one of the lead reporters at the Trib who helped destroy Blair Hull's senate campaign against Obama.

8/09/2012 10:08:00 PM

First let me clarify some things with this comment. Sgt DM was on HBT prior to SWAT. He never made it on SWAT. He bad mouth all the officers who tried out for SWAT. Only because his FAT ASS could not pass the physical and his dad could not get him assigned there.

He then leached on to Lt. MM and became his best friend by kissing his ass and sucking up to him. The Lt. rewarded him by assigning him as the lead negotiator to SWAT after Sgt. DA' retired. Even after Sgt DA recommeded another person for the position but was ignored.

The story about his injury is he broke his hand playing hockey and came into work the next day and claimed to be IOD while lifting something. Sgt DM has been a useless piece of S@#T since the begining. Definitely an abuser and merit Sgt!

No, they don't skim, the tickets they write are indistinguishable from the ones revenue writes. The reason LAZ writes tickets is that the more tickets written for expired meters, the more people will just pay the meters up front (which means more money for LAZ)

30 years ago in the deuce there was an officer who worked the wagon and it was like a death sentence to "work" the 8 hours with him. Sit under the train viaduct along side the expressway, read the paper, do a crossword puzzle, listen to a radio, take a personal, have some lunch, read a book, and answer the calls that were assigned to you. Avoid all arrests if possible and make sure that you drop off some smokes with the watch commander who was a true legend of the CPD. And you know what? He was right. It just took a while to understand his wisdom. Take the stress out of the job like he did. Have a nice long safe retirement. And why is anyone still writing tickets for that weasel of a mayor? Answer your calls and go on 10-1's. Read a good book.

Fewer tickets?

Bull shit. CPD are on Street Cleaning like white on rice in 001/019/018/024. Meter tickets in 1st and 18th every day.

Hell...all the PO's do in 024 are write Exp Plates and City Sticker and Street Cleaning and Rush hour tickets.

Debbie in 019 writes about 3 to 4 books a day, every day from 6am to 2pm...and cries if Revenue gets to rush hour or street cleaning before she does. On the flip side, the 019 Bike Detail couldn't write a parker without falling off her bike.

The Bike Detail in 018 lives for Street Cleaning and Checking vehicles in the LP Zoo and Beach parking lots.

The Segway Ranger in 018 is probably the biggest example of a hair gel...I've watched him whine at a Revenue Supervisor that PEA's did all the street cleaning and he wasn't able to write any. And then watched the Revenue Supervisor ask the Cop "you don't have anything better to do than Street Cleaning for 72k a year?" and drive off.

I am not even half done with my first parker book of the year! Too busy running around because of a shortage of police officers.

Why doesnt someone report the demographics of the people actually paying these fines? Where do they reside any how many are issued geographically in this city?

How about reporting the demographics of where there are parking meters? Lets see, NW Hwy has a lot of small businesses and parking meters. Madison ave has a lot of small businesses, as well as Central near Lake street, but no meters. What do you suppose the difference is?

Ticket writing has been out sourced to Non City Employees who can live outside of the city limits.

I even met one ticket writer in 019 District, writing parking tickets on Cubs game day, who actually lives in Indiana, She should me her D.L. even though it says Chicago all over her uniform!

Nice job Mayor Rahm and Ex-mayor Daley!

Speaking of "morale death spiral"...McCarthy is now hand picking who makes it into the Bike Unit based on his clouted drinking buddies. After all the hard work those guys did during NATO, nice way to kick them in the teeth. All those officers are going through a legitmate interviewing process to get to be detailed there as part of the unit, and instead of letting the process happen you hand pick a clouted drinking buddy's daughter. What a dickhead move. You sir, are an ass. To all the officers that have recently been interviewed, send your applications to the SUPT. it appears he's making the decisions these days. Better yet, drop a case of beer off to his office and you to may magically appear on an order to transfer to the bike unit. No one else... just you.

Your post makes me think you have a problem with drinkers.

Read a good book

I remember when, on my first few years on the job, some double digits ago, after a contract was signed and we got a decent raise, everyone on the watch went out and wrote a few extra tickets to the parking violators of the city, helping to raise revenue as expected of us and a way to say thanks for getting the contract signed.

none of that anymore. we get piddly raises and no one replaces those who retire. we are shorthanded everyday, denied time off, jerked around by the medical section and finance committee when it comes to IODs, etc.

. . . . what else can be said?

Relax! Every one of the officers in the Bike Unit used a phone call to get there. Some of the officers there are as lazy as it gets and spend more time in Starbucks than riding their bicycles.
The funniest thing about the original post is the fact it probably came from someone on the team who used their clout to get there.
As someone who was trained for the NATO event by their "best", I was not impressed! Eight instructors and only three of them were skillful on their bikes. Two of them were riding electric assisted bikes (how lazy can you get!), a few of them seemed to have difficulty keeping up with the group on our long rides and some of them would complain when one of the good riders took us out for a long ride. The female (why was there only one?), the guy with grey hair and the heavier guy who plays hockey were good but the rest of them were bad examples.
A special shout out goes to the instructor that the Tribune photoed. Can you do anything without a cup of coffee in your hands? Fitting they got a picture of you holding one while instructing! Would it have been too difficult to put the cup down and help keep officers from falling during the "box drill"? Other instructors did. I actually believe you enjoyed watching some of us get hurt falling... It was especially sad when you stopped our group in the middle of Randolph during a ride so you could run in to Starbucks for coffee without anyone knowing what was going on, including the other instructors and sergeant. You sir need to get over yourself!
Back to the point. The unit has several "special" people already and I am sure whoever the "clouted one" is they will fit right in.

I love how the sarge spent an hour explaining how he will never take anyone who has a phone call. Since abusing us for everything during NATO & treating us like shit didn't get you on the merit LT list you have to try a new tactic. MT will fit right in with your zac effron and his gf, all 3 who never ate shit in a ghetto district or put their time in on 1st watch. Enjoy freezing your asses and keeping every dunkin' & Starbucks safe. I feel sorry for the good coppers in that unit who have to deal with their new princess. She's your problem now!!! Goodriddence from 024.
