Knife Wielding Assailant Shot

He might still make it:
  • A Chicago police sergeant shot a man wielding a knife at the intersection of LaSalle and Monroe streets about 1:50 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The man was driving a black Maxima that rear-ended a silver car as they headed southbound down LaSalle, Chicago Police News Affairs [...] said.

The man got out of the car and tried to attack the driver of the other car. A private security officer stopped to check on the car accident, [...], and the man stabbed her. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The sergeant who responded to the scene told the man to drop the knife and he didn't, [...]. He was taken to an area hospital but his condition wasn't available.

And once again, reporter Peter Nickeas doesn't use the word "victim" to describe the assailant/asshole. Even the headline is neutral - just the facts. Maybe there's hope for some in the media yet. Maybe he'll make editor one day, but why should we wish ill on his life like that?

I've come across Pete at a few crime scenes and he seems like a decent guy. He has a job to do just like us but he doesn't get in the way nor does he try to do anything that would in any way impede or effect the investigation in a negative way. He is very respectful even though police officers have been quite rude to him on occasion.

The Mayor has to see to it that "underprivilged youths experience nature at Northerly Island campsites."

The Mayor has to see to it that busloads of vegetables are driven into what is called a "food desert."

Leaves time for the strong young men of the "community" to cruise the night-life strip in chauffeured stretch limousines, leaping out and assaulting people.

Leaves time for groups to travel all the way out to Foster and River Road, robbing victims and crashing through the underbrush.

We got a weird definition of "poverty," huh?

When I first began ER nursing, two things surprised and troubled me: 1) how often people survived being shot and stabbed (most of the time), and 2) the way some patients were both (so-called) victims and criminals simultaneously.

The sheer volume of stupid and violent activities in some neighborhoods virtually guarantees that the residents who attract and require the most CPD and CFD attention are rarely 100% "innocent" and law-abiding. And the saying goes, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." So what does it mean when the cops are the enemy?

It means known local criminals are trusted more than paramedics and cops. It leads residents to view most EMS or CPD response as biased interlopers who mean them harm. Which just further protects the criminal elements.

More reporters should hang out in ERs for hours or days at a time, and observe how ERs and CPD interface. It's the only way they will observe first hand the very blurry line between "crime victim" and "criminal."

It never occurs to anyone (least of all reporters) to ask, what was the so-called victim doing that attracted police attention in the FIRST place? I know, because I was that way too. But after a couple years of inner-city ER nursing, I learned to ask that question. After five years of inner-city ER nursing, I have concluded that there is no fixing or curing the violence in such communities. There is only containing it.

What people don't realize unless they are paramedics or cops or ER nurses is that the vast majority of this violence in "bad neighborhoods" is perpetrated on the local residents of those same neighborhoods. As terrible (for tourism) as high-visibility attacks on the Gold Coast are, they are a. drop. in. the. OCEAN of violence that occurs in the criminals' home neighborhoods, perpetrated on their friends and neighbors.

I have lost track of how many elderly black men I've taken care of who were battered and robbed by young black men mere blocks from their own homes. It is that frequent. And even housebound hermits aren't safe.

There has been only one real clue as to how deeply criminal activity permeates "normal life" in inner-city communities. University of Chicago researchers traced the rising incidence of severe community-acquired MRSA infections (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a severe staph infection) they were seeing in very young children with no other risk factors, some who died. Children's Memorial, on the north side, was not seeing this in their young patients.

Tracking the infections led to a common vector: Cook County Jail.

Most infected patients had a first degree male relative who had been in Cook County Jail.
(http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/releasing-the-disease/Content?oid=926087 , http://mrsa-research-center.bsd.uchicago.edu/JAMA_02_25_1998_issue.pdf )

Reporters impose their white, middle class 'question authority' viewpoints -- derived from MUCH more structured, privileged, safe, non-violent backgrounds and communities -- on violent and chaotic communities they would never live in themselves (and couldn't survive unscathed if forced to).

Such reportage can never be unbiased. It is already inherently biased. The reporters -- and, sadly, the vast majority of readers -- don't know even know how biased the "CPD shooting victim" stories are.

How often is it ever reported that a "CPD shooting victim" had NO criminal record? That would be front page, headline news if it were discovered by some intrepid reporter. So why do we never hear this? Is it because the reporters don't investigate that deeply? Or is it because they do and they can't find any truly "innocent" CPD shooting "victims"?

I retired last year but quit trying to talk to her about my work day over 20 years ago. I always felt that ER nurses understood more because they had to deal with the same people we did. I love this citizen telling it like it really happened. as a citizen, I'm so tired of the news giving air time to relatives and friends who rag on the Chicago police- most of us citizens know those people mugging for the camera and blaming cops in incidents like this are lying and making excuses for bad behavior such as what happened here. hurray for this good citizen's willingness to speak the truth in defense of our police for a change! it just feels better to see on the news that we are supporting one another as citizens and that we are supporting our police in these times of high crimes here! I'd love to know more about this guy, tv news people! and more about the female cop who to me is a real Chicago hero! even if the newspapers and the mayor so choose to not allow us to celebrate our genuine city heroes by giving supporters of criminals too much voice, and supporters of our heroes too little in our beautiful and beloved city of Chicago.

Said to say that nowadays it seems the police get very little cooperation or respect from ER staff compared to when I came on the job. I base my opinion on working patrol my entire career and being in ERs almost every day, at least several times per week.

That nurses' post should go viral on ALL media!!!! This is life as WE know it. I love that the truth is exposed in this post by someone other than the police because no one ever believes us police. This ER nurse AND the Sgt from 001st District are heroes to me. You rock!!

Pete Nickeas is a very thoughtful, principled reporter. You might be interested in his interview with the Gawker: http://gawker.com/peter-nickeas/
This blog post may be what ultimately got the NY media world's attention. Why doesn't Obama address the horrible level of violence in Chicago?

Why did he go to the hospital Sarge ?

Bullets used in the line of duty are free and you get a loaner while your gun is in the shop?

I know! Repeat customers?

Good work but there's always room.for improvement?

The Sgt did a good job on the scene after the police shooting. She is one hell of a Sgt. 001 is lucky to have her. Can you imagine shooting someone and than doing an awesome job quarterbacking the scene for incoming units. I'm glad she is on our team!

Sgt in 001 someone you should know ;)

if it's worth shooting once, it's worth shooting twice.

and, if it's worth shooting twice, it's worth shooting thrice.

To 8-19 9:32PM...

This dispatcher is rude, has attitude and stands out like a sore thumb among her peers. Her tone is harassing..she could be civil in her responses, but chooses not to be.

The "chinaman" comment? I'm sure you're as knowledgeable about its origin as Chicago is corrupt. If this dispatcher is out of line, she should be disciplined, protection or no protection.

My opinion as a citizen.
