Another Study Group

In addition to the Berstein Study Group, this one popped up:
  • Just wondering if you could help inform people of a Sgts exam study group there is a free information session held at Whitney Young High School on 18 Oct 2012 at 18:00 hrs and another on 20 Oct 2012 at 20:00 hrs.
    www.cpdtestprep.com  312-373-0340.
We wish to make this available to all as seats are limited...
And edge you can get is a good idea.

What are going to be the requirements to take the test for sergeant? I have 5 years on, but am hearing you will need at least 6.5 on to test?

So who is this group? Who are they connected to? What are their qualifications to offer these sessions? Do they have a track record in promotional exams with the city or any other municipality?

Funny how this group pops up without the city even officially announcing that there will be another test.

I would not spend money on these so called "expert" testing agencies that give you a supposed advantage . If you want to sit there while some guy reads to you for hours, then go ahead and waste your hard earned money. I did the first time I took the Sgt.'s exam. Just read the material the Dept. gives you over and over and over. That's what I did and it worked the second time. Take all the free classes you want, if given by old time coppers. Just one man's opinion.

Anyone able to confirm requirements to take the exam and then take the promotion? I'm hearing 6.5 years and four years college. Granted, that was from one of the local rags that call themselves newspaper. Anyone got any real info?

I was part of a study group put together for the 1993 Sgt's test. This was a group that was run by our Lt. who did this on his own time. We'd meet once a week for a few hours before going into work the midnight shift. There was no merit on this test and out of our group of about 15 patrolmen, about 6 made Sgt including myself. Without this Lt's group I know I would've never passed because I wasn't the most disciplined student. It forced me to read the orders recommended.
Thanks to the best Lt I ever worked for, who retired several years ago, Jack Halpin. A great boss and an even better person!

He as well as retired CPD brass w/o pay I might add, are promoting this preptest as an alternative to the only other legitimate course in town. No, the instuctor does not have a proven record for successes, as this is it's "maiden voyage".GO to the FREE seminar and see for yourselves if it's worth your $, and don't cry for not getting ALL the tools you need for this next promotional exam. I believe that WOODS has an honest devotion to prepare the test takers with ALL they'll need for the exam....except the annointed ones that won't worry about how to take it, or bother with the seminar..and it's YOU nay sayers and cry babies who won't take the exam anyway. I doubt you'r even registered to vote in the Pres. election, because YOU KNOW it's rigged anyway!! And NO, I'm not getting paid to endorse it.just go and decide for yourselves, those of you who are taking the exam when it's announced. talk to the people who have used Berstein method and whether or not they believe it helped them, at least w/another option you can decide if you want a qualified CPD geared preptest or one thats a standarized test taking class @ over $900.00 w/out a one on one critique of your sample test...Good luck w/that!

So let me get this straight there are coppers actually bitching about a free information session?????????

Stay off the the blog Bernstein employees. You CARPETBAGGERS will get your idiots to sign up just like you do in every state that you bring your canned program.

And by the way you do have a proven track record. Which includes outrageous prices for a dog snd pony show. If you have a thousand people attend your class yes you will have a few pass the exam. But what about the other 99%........

Just saying.

No one is saying you have to take it but its nice they did it i am sure they don't need the money as most have high paying positions plus their pensions.

Also its less expensive than the other programs out there, get it LESS expensive NOT MORE expensive so do your homework before you write garbage that gives bad advice. Just say thanks for the opportunity and move on.......

Of course you could spend twice the money and get some guy from florida who was selling insurance the week before to teach you that sounds like a good idea........

Or better yet let them take the other class that has unlimited seating to anyone with a grand to throw away. They will be happy to help them part with it.

Ill be in the limited seating class. That alone shows they are not in it for the money. Otherwise they would hold it at the United Center, I am sure anyone with half a brain knows which class is the best.

Thanks again and see you on the 18th..

P.S. I already pre-paid to save my seat.

Even if its just a group of your friends getting together. Also he said they will be giving some test tips for free at the sessions because they know most coppers wont be able to get into their test prep because it is already getting sold out. The limited seating is not a sales trick its just a fact.

That shows what kind of stand up guys they are. They did not knock anyone rather they encouraged me to get into any class i could get into. That sold me.

The berstein classes are a joke. worst money i ever spent. done spending big money and all that study time for a test that was rigged from the beginning while i saw people who are dumb as hell or "chicago royal family" people that were invited to special study groups at HQ. I was so naive back then when I was new and that my studying for Det and Sgt test would make a difference. Im glad i woke up after ten years and realized that the tests are a joke and are only around for political hacks and the "chosen" select. Any advice, unless you know a sponsor who will put you at the top of the promotion list or you have $500 to waste your money on these dumb study classes, don't bother. Well, some of these hair gels are going to out score you. They are probably, smarter, brighter, and hungrier. I have seen the aptitude of officers with 30 years on the job; they do not have a snowball's chance in hell. Some of the new officers have advanced degrees (masters, legal degrees, and PHDs). Yes. This is the competition. (An officer with an advanced degree from a challenging school has a serious advantage--from a fairness standpoint, it is a very unfair advantage.)

I wrote before about what I did to pass the last Sgt test and get promoted. I stopped working part-time jobs and made studying the part time work. I took all of the test prep classes and studied hours a day. As someone mentioned, if they haven't offered the test in 6 or 7 years, by the time this one comes up, why would you pass up the chance to get a bette score. I can name 50 coppers that are in the 40-100 out on the current list that would have paid $5,000 to move up 20 points on the last test. Take every chance you get to pick up a point. They add up.
Roberts class helped me with the multiple choice questions and Bernstein helped me a lot with the open ended questions. FWIW.

To those talking shit about Berstein, you were probably the ones arguing with him at every lecture saying that's not how it's done in Chicago.

To future Sergeant candidates, don't listen to the short sighted, narrow minded, nit wits on this blog talking smack about study groups. The last test was over seven years ago, by the time the next test is given it will be eight. Give yourself every advantage. So you spend a few hundred bucks, the return will be far greater. You need to look at this test like the MCAT's or LSAT's. Don't be so fucking cheap! This is your future. I was in the last Sergeant class. I made it off of score. I completely credit Bernstein for shaping the way I answered the test questions, which led to my promotion. I don't consider myself highly intelligent, just highly motivated. Bernstein didn't teach me anything about how to be a Sergeant. The class taught me tips and tricks on how to answer questions. Bernstein enhanced my police vocabulary with buzz words that the test scorers look for while grading the tests. I know my experience won't change some people's perception. Especially if one feels like they've been duped, but maybe those people need to look themselves in the mirror and except the fact that maybe they didnt listen or study hard enough. And if that's not the case maybe your just DUMB? If the costs of the class are too steep, get four friends together. Pool your money. Get the material, form a study group. Just make sure the group you are in is committed to studying. Lastly, I am willing to bet that of the Sergeants that have been promoted off the list 75% of them took Bernstein. Just saying.

Our leadership comes in many forms from Great Patrolmen, Sergeants etc and sometimes the Leadership comes from Retired Bosses who actually care about the working coppers that they supervised and worked with. There are a lot of "Special" this and that on the CPD. A lot of people who lack imagination in naming units too, all they can think up is "Special" Bumpkins etc.

Special Functions
Special Events & Liaison
Special Employment
Special Activities
Special Victims
Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
Special Operations Section (in the history books)
Special Operations Group (also in the history books)

That is 8 units or groups or divisions or sections or whatever with the first name of "Special" now or in the past.

Now isn't that special? I can't wait for the next low brow inbred CPS educated moron to give one more unit the monicker of "Special"

McBoozer ought to outlaw the use of "Special" anything throughout the department.

I wouldn't pay if I were you. I took it and retired a patrolman. If you are disciplined and motivated and willing to devote all your free time to studying you can memorize those orders.

Just stop thinking like a stubborn patrolman. No more thinking of shit like it ought to be, think like a boss, like it is, makes no sense but you have to wrap your head around supervisory thinking, it isn't what you would do, it is what would the department want you to do, think like a mushhead boss and you have a chance.

Get a study partner, just one, who is also motivated and work hard as hell. It is hard work and lots of studying. Go to it.

Save the $700 for more blue shirts, just in case.

The SCC Grammar and Spelling Police have spoken.
Get out of your parents basement and get a fucking life Douche Bag! "Is that grammatically correct enough for you? ASSWIPE!"
I did not know that my blog posts were being graded.
I was typing on an IPAD and the god damn things sometimes changes words.
All I was trying to do was give my perspective on things.

Woods has no info on the new test. Bernstein does. He was at the FOP meeting doing the briefing. He has proven results. Woods retired 20 years ago. WTF does he know? Nothing , unless he attends Bernsteins class.

Every boss says Go to Bernstein! Even woods said he went to Bernstein and said he was good. I'm going to Bernstein. He is the Master, woods is the student.

Bernstein was dead on with my Sgts Assessment. Well worth the money! I made it back very quickly. You either want it or you don't. You have to work for it!

Anyone know how Woods made Sgt? Merit or rank? That is what is important. I want to be taught by the guy who knows how to take these tests, the person who ranked the highest. The guy who ranks the highest is the guy who knows his sh*t.

Why isn't there some kind of guarantee that a certain number, say 500 must be promoted off the list. Wouldn't that motivate more officers to take the test. It's not like the officers who scored in the top 500 six years ago aren't as qualified if not more so than they were when they took the test. Not to mention the millions saved on not having to pay to test again. Furthermore, how much time and paper are used from on duty PO's printing and copying G.O.'s?

I spoke to captain John Roberts of CJR study group today 20 Oct 2012, and he said that he will be starting a study group very soon. He also said officers should go to CJR promotions study group website and leave their email address under the contact us bar. He along with some other high ranking, respected bosses will be conducting the class. I took his class for the last sergeants test and scored very well along with many of my colleagues. Captain John Roberts is all about helping the officers getting promoted. Good luck.

He was good on the old style test. According to the fop, it's a new test and Bernstein is the guy.
