O.T. Yesterday the Chicago Tribune ran a story on Flamin' Hot Cheetos and kid's loyalty to them. I'm surprised nobody cracked any jokes in response. But I don't see this as a laughing matter. I think it is sad how children are chomping away at this junk food, unaware of the harmful effect this is having on their central nervous system. The story was written for your average viewer to help show the problems we face. How the general public perceives us and what we do effects everything from contract negotiations to hirings.

I was in the academy with Lt Johnson and worked with him in the wood. Not only a class guy but a hell of a good Officer. If I don't have reasonable suspicion to stop you, then I have nothing to say to you. It's not our place to harass citizens. If they want to talk to me or need my help, they will approach me and initiate a conversation. If not, I'm certain they don't want me bothering them beyond a friendly "hello" or "good afternoon". If I reasonably believe that they are committing, are about to commit, or have committed a crime, then I'll stop them and talk to them. I'll even frisk them for my safety, run their name, and do a contact card. Otherwise, I'm not fucking with them. I know that when I'm out conducting my daily business I don't want to engage in a conversation with some police officer I don't know and wouldn't appreciate being a harassed by one either.

Also you do know that if you go up to someone to talk to them without pc then you can't pat them down? So what is the fucking point then? I always pat people down on my stops. Always. But when you pat down someone then that is a Terry Stop and in order to initiate a Terry Stop you need pc. Looks like you need to go to school.

The ignorance of some people on this job is unbelievable. Probable cause is ONLY needed when placing someone under arrest. And, if you go to talk to someone and you have reasonable suspicion for that stop then you may DETAIN them only for a reasonable amount of time. If they say fuck you they may still be beckoned to stay and cooperate with the investigation the officer is conducting even though there is no "probable cause" yet to arrest. IF the person has been advised that this is an "investigatory stop" and they are not under arrest, and not in hand cuffs then there is a reasonable expectation that they are not under arrest but only being detained for a reasonable amount of time. As a police officer you should know all of this.. not just because its your job every day but for your own safety... both of you need to go back to school, but more the idiot who says you cant perform a protective pat down without "probable cause"....
