Lambert Tree Winner

  • Chicago Police Officer Joseph Lopez accepts the Lambert Tree Award from Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, left, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The award is given out for bravery in the line of duty. Lopez, an 8-year veteran, responded to a call of shots fired. Upon arrival, a witness told Lopez the subject fled in a SUV. Lopez located the parked vehicle several minutes later. As he approached, the rear passenger door opened and a male subject fled.

Lopez pursued the subject to a residential parking lot, where the subject turned toward Lopez, pointing and firing a semi-automatic handgun at him three times. Fearing for his life, Lopez aimed his weapon at the subject, but did not return fire as he was concerned additional gunfire would endanger citizens near the scene. The foot pursuit continued to a rear gangway and up some stairs.

The subject, realizing he had nowhere to go, walked down the stairs, coming face-to-face with Lopez. At that point the subject pointed his handgun at the officer. Fearing for his life, Lopez discharged his duty weapon one time, fatally striking the subject. The subject's weapon, a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun, fell to the ground but was recovered immediately.
A job very well done Officer. Congratulations.

Point of order, SCC.

You "win" a game of chance.

You "receive" (earn) and award such as the Lambert Tree.

Congrats, Officer!

You make us proud!

Just curious....

Do you think each year until he retires, and then dies , that "he's a great guy" Al W. will read these synopsis and then feel that he is just a political hack, no better than any of the other hacks?

Outside of the fact, that he is a political hack that "earned" our highest award for a simple UUW arrest.

I'm sure in true political hack, merit selection fashion, he thinks "he deserved it" like so many of the other hacks who were so merit worthy..

My hats off to you Officer Lopez - truly somebody who is honorable and who EARNED this. Please do not loose sight of that on this job - honor, not many have that quality. Thankfully, we are starting to hear about those on this job that still have this quality more and more.

Good job officer. Sorry you had to take a life, but it was the perps decision to die. Sounds like a textbook case and I wish you and all of CPD the best. Thank you for a thankless job.

Great job, but why do they keep stating that he feared for his life when he was confronted with a deadly force situation. I'm sure he feared for his life thoughout the encounter but a person does not have to fear for his life in order to use deadly force when it is justified. A person shall use deadly force when a person reasonably believes that they are in substantial risk of receiving serious bodily harm or substantial risk of death.

......it's nice to know people on this job. Not trying to take anything away from this officer, BUT, we all know there were more heroic actions taken by officers than just this police shooting.
Wasn't Wysinger the commander in 015 when this P.O was there? Just say'n....

awwwwww, what the award wasnt enough for you? You need your name in the paper and have someone tell you good job on the blog. Get a life geek. Stop trying to pat yourself on the back so much and stop looking for the glory. If you signed up for this job because you wanted to be in the papers and a glory hound then your in the wrong business...

Merit, Merit, Merit. Lambert Tree for political reasons not deserved. Others nominated deserved it more. If it is a Duck it is a Duck. Might be a great guy but so is my Uncle.
