Enter At Your Own Risk

  • The Detroit Police Officers Association is warning citizens and out-of-towners that they enter Detroit at their own risk, saying that the "grossly understaffed" and overworked police force cannot adequately protect the public in the increasingly violent city.

“Detroit is America’s most violent city, its homicide rate is the highest in the country and yet the Detroit Police Department is grossly understaffed,” DPOA Attorney Donato Iorio told WWJ over the weekend. “The DPOA believes that there is a war in Detroit, but there should be a war on crime, not a war on its officers.”
Not only that, but they're handing out informational fliers to fans attending playoff games:
Imagine handing these out on Michigan Avenue or near the 018 District tourist areas. Rahm's head would explode.

Hey, guy, hasn't anyone else seen the bright red FOP ad signs on the sides of CTA buses, "HIRE MORE POLICE?" Saw one on Grand Ave. bus. Anyone got a pic for SCC to put up?

Gonna get ugly.

The citizens retort to that very story...

To The Detroit PD: Disband And Go Home

***

Here's the answer I have for the cops: Go home, disband and die of starvation under an overpass in the upcoming Detroit winter. The people will take care of this themselves.

$420 million dollars for cops is more than enough to cover 800,000 people. If it turns out that it's not, for whatever reason, then the simple solution is that cops didn't do their job and the job needs to go back to the people, who should be happy to do it on ther own. For $420 million one time every single citizen in Detroit can be provided a gun and enough ammunition to hole every single gang-banger a dozen times or more.

This act by the cops is nothing other than extortion, exactly as the mob practices. The correct response to extortion by any mob is never to knuckle under to it -- rather it it is to meet force with maximum lawful resistance and make clear that the extorting party will cut that crap out -- and that you are not making a request.

In short the people of Detroit need to take back their 2nd Amendment right and begin carrying firearms openly and everywhere, as the Constitution provides, making clear that the city belongs to them and not to the thugs, irrespective of what particular gang affiliation -- Crips, Bloods, god-knows-whats -- or blue -- the gang happens to be dressed in.

If the cops don't like it then they can quit and the citizens can take over. I suspect the streets will get quiet real fast should they do so, and then the "big lie" of the cop shop will become evident -- they're ineffective, they're overpaid and they're unnecessary.

Enough is enough.

Two 17-year-old boys were shot Monday night, one fatally, near a school in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side, Chicago police said.

The victims, were standing on the sidewalk in the in the 7400 block of South Dorchester Avenue when two men approached at about 8:15 p.m., both pulling guns and opening fire, Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman said who was citing preliminary information.

The shooting happened in the same block as Madison Elementary School.

The real problem is not with the cops or detectives, but with the politicians and their hack bosses promoted beyond their ability to think and lead. When you come up with idiotic methods because you've demonized the police over the years, this is the result. Handing money over to gang members in Sleaze Fire is as stupid as this new violence tax being proposed.

How about letting the police be the police and using tried and true methods and knocking off this business model bullshit? This isn't a for profit corporation, its' a fucking police department. When they stop putting wonder idiots in crystal ball units, we might see some results. Until then, you'll get more of the same.

The City may only be 800,000 people, but it's not like Chicago where there are good parts- practically all Detroit is the equivalent of the south side of Chicago (minus the good parts like Mt. Greenwood and Garfield Ridge). Plus, the city used to house over 3 million people so there is a TON of area to cover. To give you an idea, Detroit has approximately 139 square miles and Chicago has about 237 square miles. Detroit has only approximately 2,130 officers, far less than half of what Chicago has. And there have been 261 homicides in Detroit as of September 10, 2012 for only 800,000 people. Let's hope these fliers get them some support.

Mayor expected to paint rosy picture at budget presentation
Preview stressed TIF surplus, job reductions, but not 'a lot of detail,' aldermen say

Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to offer a good-news budget to City Council on Wednesday that would siphon money from special taxing districts and rely on predictions of an improving economy to balance the books, aldermen said.

"It wasn't a lot of detail," said Ald. Howard Brookins, 21st. "There wasn't a whole lot of: 'This is how we're going to do it.'"

...a promise to hire enough officers to keep up with attrition at the police department.

Even as the mayor and his staff try to paint that positive picture, they reiterated a warning that chronic underfunding of city pensions will catch up to Chicago next year if state law isn't changed.

At a briefing for council committee leaders, Emanuel "said we have to get a handle on the pensions, or this would seem like the good old days next year," Ald. Joe Moore, 49th, said.

If changes aren't made to how taxpayers and public employees pay for pensions, the city will face a $700 million increase in contributions just for police and firefighter retirement funds in 2014, said Laurence Msall, president of the nonpartisan Civic Federation budget watchdog group.

And pension reform isn't the only major issue the city will have to resolve come next year. The city's major labor contracts, for police and firefighters, have expired and are under negotiation.
