The Neighbors Did What?
- Pamela Ball bit the hand that was trying to force her into the trunk of her car, but she doesn't believe that's what saved her.
Ball credits the dozen neighbors who heard her screams in the alley behind her Andersonville home and chased away the two men who had just robbed a jewelry store after tying up the clerk and were planning to get away in Ball's car Monday afternoon.
“There were 12 neighbors in the alley with cell phones,’’ said Ball, in her early 60s. “One neighbor even chased them and one neighbor grabbed me.’’
The neighbors called police? They neighbors chased the suspects? The neighbors identified the criminals to the police?
How very....unusual. At least unusual in Chicago. And unusual from the usual fare we hear in the media about "uncooperative" witnesses and victims who tell us "You're the police, figure it out." It's almost like a functional segment of society doesn't want to put up with the criminals and is actually eager to see them imprisoned for their crimes instead of embraced, coddled, glorified, sheltered, and supported by a dysfunctional structure.
Too bad it isn't contagious.

Not too long ago, some drunk girl was walking home from the bars, singing at 4 AM down the alleys, and someone grabbed her. A guy heard her yelling and came down the stairs and beat the s__t out of the assailant with a shovel. No smartphone. >grin<
Laughing about all the "cell phones" -- folks used to grab pitchforks, shotguns, etc. and still do once you get out of Space Bubble Chicago -- but still gotta say "Good Job" to everyone who came out for the event. May well have saved your neighbor's life.

I live not too far from where this happened, and I recognized some of these "good neighbor witnesses" as being parents of children from my kids' school. I have had more than a couple of occasions where I wound up in their company at school functions before they knew what I do for a living.
Before they figured out that I'm CPD, I got to listen to them laugh and joke about topics ranging from officers deserving being shot and killed, to being infideltous to having asshole kids, to stealing and selling drugs and "getting off easy losing his pension and going to jail for beating a kid just for spitting on him".
Not all - but I'm secure in saying most - of these people are NOT your friends and absolutely cannot be trusted. Hopefully this is what starts the beginning of the turning of the tide, but I'm not holding my breath. I may change my tune when these witnesses are all still religiously attending court dates after the defense requests his 9th continuance.

They keep tabs on people who intervene and who are cooperating with the police. Then when the police are gone, the gangs and criminals decide to burn the citizens garage, burn their cars, slash their car tires and even hurt them physically, etc.... Now let us see how cooperative they are! I grew up in Humboldt Park and about 23 years ago it was a bad neighborhood. I grew up in a decent family. I witnessed first hand what happens when you cooperate with the police- my dad's face was slashed and our car was burned. You as a police officer SCC should know better yet sometimes you stereotype certain segments of society.

I live near the area (5 blks away), and knew something was up when I saw numerous helicopters flying above the area. It's good to know that some of my neighbors were willing to get involved however since we know the offenders were armed, it would be nice if my neighbors were able to legally carry a firearm to protect themselves.

SCC, I am the original poster. Yes, I do support conceal carry. I happen to have a different perspective because I grew up on the other side of the tracks (no I don't need or want anyone's sympathy). It just irks me the wrong way when come people criticize an entire community with blanket statements without thinking things through. Just look at 016 today. In Copland there are shitheads and gang bangers right on the 30 sector of the 16th district. There are a lot of police officers and retired ones there, city workers and other hard working decent people. Now in that part of 016 when a major crime occurs, no one sees anything or heard anything. The reason is because the riff raffs can and do intimidate the decent citizens.
If only this was CCW state. All we would have to do is come clean up the scum bags from gutter.

And I grew up in Logan Square about the same time. Our block saw a huge wave of gang intimidation and I remember my mother was always worried 'they'll put a brick through the picture window'. I told her that's how intimidation works; if you capitulate to threats, the neighborhood will be taken over by two or three criminals, when, realistically, hundreds of law abiding citizens hugely outnumber the problem element.
My parents had the intestinal fortitude to stick it out and they called the police. A LOT. Thanks to them and a few neighbors on each adjacent block, we never had the severe problems others had.

We travelled in other circles similar to yours and yes... We encountered the same thing.
Lots of snark and smirk from the "smart set" who have so much to say about what Policemen do and how they do it.
There is absolutely NO PLEASING these people.
Yes... Very nasty when they're among each other regarding the cares and concerns of Policemen.
It is as if they absolutely HATE the fact that their fate, their quality of life is more closely intertwined with the fate and fortunes of the men and women of CPD than they'd like.
They (most of them) are conditioned to hate and disdain what "That Uniform" stands for...
They like to hide behind the facade of being "decent and law abiding" while celebrating the pain Policemen have to endure.
How do we know?
Our neighbors, of course... They have no idea we're The Police and we strive to keep it that way.
We don't mix or mingle with them very much for that reason.
Just enough to know how they REALLY feel about Policemen.
Of course... If the day ever came when it would be THEIR tender asses looking at manning a post or taking the point, they would scream and flee.
We puzzled over this for years and came to the conclusion that there is a BIG difference in the customs, conventions and mores of those who have several generations worth of tough, old fashioned blue collar roots in this city.
We can still smell the Stockyards...

We still remember those tough Dads & Grand-Dads going into the neighborhood places for a shot & a beer before going home... Moms and Grandmothers didn't complain too much because those hard-working guys were usually too tired for foolishness and were glad to come home.
The very character of Chicago has been re-booted and not for the better in our opinion.
One young and blissfully unaware of the real world neighbor let fly with this choice nugget a few years ago...

With group-think like that, it isn't a wonder why self serving shit-asses like the current mayor accquire and maintain their hold on the keys to this city.
We listen to these people talk and it's really aggravating how they blame the Thin Blue Line for essentially all that ails this city.
They scream and yell about "we pay your salary so we have a right to criticize you" but absolutely fail to execute their duties not just as "tax-payers" but as citizens as well... And all that that implies... Damning indictment inserted here... > <
They shit-talk about how Coppers are "funny in the head" too...
We would love to say, "If YOU had to serve & protect and try to protect YOUR BACK from you and yours for 20 to 40+ years, you would have a very skewed world view too."
Oh well... We just hope to be around to witness the arrival of the "Cocked-Hat Security & Chicago Public Safety Customer Service Agents" take over the function of CPD... Egad... They even embrace THIS pending nightmare because The Police will finally be made to "go away."
They have as much animus toward The Police as dude does... And just like dude, they really don't know why.

Not hardly. This happened about a mile north, about a block away from Pierce grade school. So, I'm guessing that had a lot to do with the involvement of neighbors.

To add to the post about Chris Pettry and the benefit. It will be held at John Barleycorn in wrigleyville,from 5pm-9pm. Chris was the bears fan who was murdered last weekend by a psychopath in Jacksonville Fla. Chris was self employed and the sole supporter of his wife and three kids.

The difference between Andersonville and where I work in the real part of town is that the good black people are simply sick and tired of being victims.
I had a guy observe his neighbor's house being burglarized. Dude was putting the goods in a supercart and started down the alley. The neighbor called police, took a shovel and tagged this guy really good. He was an easy find limping away about three blocks from the scene.
The good people where I work appreciate us, but they are afraid to help or even tell us because the assholes are in much greater numbers than they are in Andersonville.

The reading comprehension-challenged glossed over that fact that I referred to most - not all - of the folks in question as being untrustworthy and unsupportive of their police. I also stand by my words when I said I witnessed firsthand the contempt and scathing commentary directed at the CPD and law enforcement in general.

It's Andersonville, not too unexpected for that community-minded neighborhood! Which is also home to the best pizza in America and one of the best beer selections, at the Hop Leaf. Now, just imagine if we actually had CCW in Illinois --it'd be a 'hood full of gun-toting, Swedish lesbians with great taste in food & drink, and quite probably the safest, most pleasant area in the United States.

I did not condemn everyone in Andersonville either. I had commented that "WestSide knows the "treacherous yuppie" type in his gut. Been working for and writing checks to destructive social causes for years, now they want the results stopped at their particular condominium doorstep.
As I said -- just you go to court as a witness after one of these "neighbors" has had their lousy 12" kitchen TV snatched by some parolee. Guy drove there with them, but once the court appearance concluded HE HAD TO ASK THEM FOR A RIDE BACK. If you'd gone to the washroom for a minute, they'd have been gone when you came out.

Hey, not all of us on the Far North Side are liberals. In my neighborhood even the Democrats are a bit conservative. Something to do with keeping up the property values, I think. I have been known to walk up to a cop car parked on my block to ask if there is some problem I should know about. If he's just pulled over to make a cell phone call or something, I invite him to hang out here often. When I see cops around, I relax a little.

The courts and damnable civil lawyers have turned private citizens into terrified subjects, same as cops. So not only do you have urban anonymity leading to people not caring about one another, but you have people scared to lose their home and freedom if they beat down/shoot some savage who's commiting a crime.
Just look at the couple cases in the last year where private citizens have had to deal with legal bullshit after shooting some savage in defense of their life. Poeple know it's a nightmare; you think they're gonna put themselves out like that for a virtual stranger?
It's the damned courts and the politicians(lawyers). Exempt people(cops are people too) from civil liability when stopping a criminal act, as well as absolutely preventing criminals from making any profit whatsoever from criminal activity(civil suit=profits) and see what happens. Oh, and loser pays in civil court, to include making the lawyer liable for costs if the plantiff can't pay.
Problem solved.
I agree with the guy who wrote the quote I copied below..... Of course there are shit birds who wouldn't cooperate even if they had guaranteed anonymity but I have personally encountered several people who were just afraid to put their name on the report. Afraid of the jag's that live down the street that will terrorize them. Seeing that Many of you preach that 'don't be proactive' bullshit, you wont be giving special attention to the street the witness lives on because...you just don't give a fuck. That being said, I have also seen people, step up in face of fear and be damn good witnesses. Don't be so quick to blow off the 'other segment of society'.
-----Let's say the gangs and criminals overtake the area. They keep tabs on people who intervene and who are cooperating with the police. Then when the police are gone, the gangs and criminals decide to burn the citizens garage, burn their cars, slash their car tires and even hurt them physically, etc.... Now let us see how cooperative they are!
Man "West Side, Inside Do-Nothing" that's a lot of hostility you got there. Too bad you think you're alone. Try being a teacher and getting chastised/warned for restraining a kid that's literally physically assaulting you. Gimme a break, you deal with the same kids I do and you get a damn gun.
