At best, handcuffs will only slow down a career criminal. Just because a guy is handcuffed, doesn't mean he is safe. ALWAYS watch your prisoner, even if he's in a cage car.
That was easy when we had enough officers on the street. With this lack of manpower, it is dangerous. Is is just a matter of time......
Early in my career I had a prisoner almost get out of the cuffs by stuffing foil into the ratchet. I had cuffed him to the wall ring, went to the desk to get papers, gone maybe two minutes. When I got back he had only one click more to go and he would have been loose. After that I always, always double locked my cuffs.
It's just safe to remove all drawstring clothing from your prisoner when you get him or her into the processing room. Always give a thorough and complete search of your arrestee, and then have your partner repeat the process. Four hands might just find something that shouldn't be there that two hands didn't.
In each and every arrest during my long career I handcuffed the arrestee behind his/her back, placed them in the rear seat and put the seat belt on them as tight as I could even in a cage car. I have seen too many indidents where officers were injured by handcuffed arrestees, or escapes.

This piece of trash killed 2 detectives and a state trooper after he escaped out of his handcuffs. Be safe and God bless.
Thanks, SCC reader! I just passed this on to the guys in my agency! Just one more thing...

Both hands cuffed the whole time, and palms out.
