This Stuff Will Kill You

  • Hostess Brands announced Friday that it is winding down operations and has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to close its business and sell its assets, including its iconic brands and facilities.
Over 1,000 jobs in Illinois alone, and more than a few other brands tanking with the snack cakes.

Blame Rahm,

Rahm is the guy taking all the snacks out of the city building vending machines. Rahm is destroying jobs.

Hope you're happy now Rahm. Have another sip of your $3/bottle bottled water as the city goes to hell.

They pushed the union to the edge and the union said no mas.

Hostess tripled CEO and executive pay and they wanted union members to take yet another cut in wages and in health care benefits that amounted to a 17% cut.

Suck it Hostess. Another bakery will replace you.

They were all over blaming the unions and a strike for the Hostess shut down, but the real story is they were trying to break the unions, union workers have given up many benefits in the past but the company wanted to crush the pensions, the workers refused to give up more and struck.
Then the CEO of Hostess was awarded a 300 percent raise (from approximately $750,000 to $2,550,000) and at least nine other top executives of the company received massive pay raises before closing the business...

Yep as the mayor continues his non-stop attack of words, trying to redefine them to mean something else.

Word's like "World-Class City" implying that Chicago meets that commonly defined category of World-Class.

Welp mayor, if that's the case why is it that the neighboring states have an unemployment rate that is about one full percentage point lower than us? World-Class city? Ahhh Nope. Not even a World-Class State. Just a bunch of crooked amoral politicians violating the social contract by stealing peoples pensions -- then instead of prosecuting the thieves blame the victims and proclaim how you're gonna save them by reforming their pensions by taking even more wealth away from the people that played by the rules.

Hard to believe that they will get away with it untouched like the bankers and corporate exec's.

Not a single "pension reform" act proposed asks for the corporations to pay a little more in taxes or to give the tax breaks back. Follow the money ppl. Those tax breaks were funded in part from everyone's pension. It's a Grand Bargain transfer of wealth but not to the middle class joe on Food Stamps. It's going to the billion dollar corporate whores who fund the mayors and others campaign funds.

From the wall street journal

"The snack giant endured $52 million in workers' comp claims in 2011, according to its bankruptcy filing this January. Hostess's 372 collective-bargaining agreements required the company to maintain 80 different health and benefit plans, 40 pension plans and mandated a $31 million increase in wages and health care and other benefits for 2012.

Union work rules usually required cake and bread products to be delivered to a single retail location using two separate trucks. Drivers weren't allowed to load their own vehicles, and the workers who loaded bread weren't allowed to load cake. On most delivery routes, another "pull up" employee moved products from back rooms to shelves.

This year management negotiated concessions from some of the unions, including the Teamsters, but the bakers rejected a last and best offer in September. Then the courts gave Hostess unilateral authority to modify collective-bargaining contracts, prompting the strike. So now it will liquidate, instead of attempting to emerge from Chapter 11 intact.

The 18,500 layoffs are equal to about 11% of the net new jobs the entire U.S. economy created in October. The unions are blaming private equity, or Bain Capital, or capitalism, but the election is over. And so is Hostess"

The sad part is that the 99 months of unemployment is probably a bonus over the paycheck.

Unions are necessary to protect workers from ruthless management. But when a union goes wild, who protects the workers? Ya sure, elections, but we all know how bullcrap sells elections.

I bet the fiscal cliff negotiations dont touch the old buddy system for the few billionaires. ITs the middle guy "millionaires" that are going to get screwed. The elete that wont be touched. The president wants us to be a two tier class system. The rich and poor. He'll tax the middle to death until he makes them poor.

11/17/2012 01:58:00 AM

Probably as much as the over-paid millionaire CEO's of Hostess would have. I'm sure the $12.00 an hour employees will be just fine collecting unemployment and then finding a new $12.00 an hour McJob. Look at the bright side, the corporate kings and queens can just use their millions to open up another business without union employees and pay the serfs $8.25 an hour with no benefits. I'm sure they'll all be floating away from this with their golden parachutes filled with millions of dollars. Don't they always? How about we quit blaming unions and the little working guys that are just trying to make a living and support their families and start blaming these greedy corporate fat cats that can just never seem to squeeze enough millions out of a company. They have the workers taking pay cuts, benefit cuts, and cheating them out of their meager pensions while they're increasing their million dollar a year salaries and then they point at the evil unions and greedy $12.00 an hour employees and say it's their fault the company has to file bankruptcy. Doesn't any of this sound familiar? The city is constantly pulling this same type of shit. They have money for every entitlement and welfare program out there in order to keep those votes rolling in but they have no money for the city worker's pensions. They always seem to vote themselves raises too while they're turning their pockets inside out during contract negotiations with our evil, greedy unions. Wake up everyone. It's the same old shit. It's a feudal system under a different veil. Now get back to work peasants.

The only things that were bloated were the CEO and executive compensation packages. Corporate mngt are much like Chicago politicians, steal what you can and then blame the people you were supposed to be looking out for. Admittedly, executive compensation is a lower part of a company's operating cost compared to labor because there are fewer of them, but it's disgusting all the same. A company could hire a recent MBA graduate to be the CEO, pay the kid 50,000/year and the company would be no worse off than before.

They want 18,500 good paying jobs for Hostess & then tell people not to eat it because it's bad for you.

They want to keep gas expensive so as to "save" the environment & then wonder why car companies are in the shitter.

They want aggressive law enforcement & then throw Cozzi for a well deserved bitch-slap.

They want well-paying blue-collar jobs for Americans & then flood the system with illegals to take said jobs.

They want you to go to College and be a success, then proceed to excoriate once you are.

They want freedom of speech & go after Shaved because they don't like his blog.

I could go on and on, but I have to go take a liberal.

Incorrect. The Teamsters, who represented nearly 2/3rds of the Hostess employees, agreed to concessions and urged the Baker's union to do the same.

I'm not sure what Obama has to do with a company continuing the ~40-yr trend of breaking private unions in this country.

Swoop down and pick the eyes out, more like. These people are the problem. Some "hedge fund" investors were running Hostess into the ground. $2 1/2 billion annual sales and it wasn't enough for the looters. They drank deeply and tossed the empty away.

They had plants here in Schiller Park and Hodgkins.

Keep sucking down all that Dem-Obama class warfare-big government bullshit. Next year, with all the tax increases, you will be paying almost 50% of your wages in taxes. But hey, this is what you voted for!

...and you always get these outfits you never heard of before claiming "98 years of quality." They trace back as far as they can through a dozen other companies that had nothing to do with the crap they sell today.

I saw the words "Old Fashioned" on some product in this huge aircraft hangar of a store just now, and I started laughing.

what's the union do to ADD value? what's a union employee do that's better than a non-union employee that makes it worth the adde cost? oh yeah, nothing.

if you run a company, you do it to make money - not to piss it away with demanding morons who threaten to grievance or strike.

You're a bitter one. I would gladly shut it down rather than be pushed around. Unions are not the problem, your FOP is... If you were given the option to keep working understaffed and out manned for 17% less money and no overtime, or walk off and collect unemployment, what would you do?

A police walk off would rattle the shit out of rahm.(I know you have a no strike policy, this is hypothetical) Private co or not, unions created the 40 hour work week, weekends off (at least 2 days off a week for you), benefits and leave time.

But I guess you can't understand that. Everything good about your job was fought for and won. YOU are part of the FOP's problem. I would like to read your well thought out response...

When Hostess filed for bankruptcy for the second time, it was mentioned in the court papers that they had plans on closing stores. This was months before the strike. Teamsters wanted them to take the 8% so they could keep getting the dues, not because they were concerned about their membership.

Food cranks -- like our Mayor and all the other Wellness Ladies -- operate under the fallacies that everyone eats Twinkies all the time, and that everyone is a child who doesn't know any better and needs to have things pulled away from him by others.

I liked those chocolate cupcakes with the squiggle. Got the urge maybe every ten years or so but it was good to know that they were there...now, that Fruit Pie of theirs was just enough to get you home sometimes.

I am sorry for all the people who are going to be out of work. The company doesn't want its displays back from stores or anything, that is it.

11/17/2012 08:41:00 AM

Horribly true -- and extremely funny comment.

The flag over there is still red, and there is still a huge portrait of Mao Tse Tung in Tienanmen Square...no joke.

They are having a Condo Bust to follow their Condo Boom too, and their new "middle class" is getting out of the country, afraid of repression and asset confiscation. (You saw this in Venezuela too, with Chavez.)

News story that Chinese are using their hard cash to buy themselves "high-tech worker" green cards, and coming here and buying 50-100 cheap foreclosed houses at a crack.

Meet the new boss...

There are increasing mass protests in China, crowds sacking local Party headquarters and pouring the expensive liquor out the windows for the cameras, literally dragging "officials" into the town square and making them stop plans to erase the village for a new pipeline. Inspiring!

It remains to be seen whether a widespread "Chinese Spring" would be met with concessions or gunfire. Given the state apparatus, I'd bet on machine guns right now.

Well the Hostess employees took your advice and quit. I'd say what the executives are making is the employee's business because they all have a stake in making said company profitable. If a company makes $20 million profit per year and the top executives are making a combined 19.5 million per year while the workers are making a combined total of .6 million per year, you can't really sit there and point the finger at the greedy employees because the company is losing money! When you're making 2 million dollars per year and asking your $40,000 per year employees to take pay and benefit cuts while you're giving yourself a raise, your company deserves to go bankrupt. A good business owner would make equal percentage pay cuts across the board starting at the top, not just cutting the salaries of the peons at the bottom. You lead by example.

TO: 1041am

Private businesses have a choice to hire and fire, employees have a choice to work for them or another co. BUT, you talk about communism. Without unions, we have the opposite. If no unions existed, then all jobs and minimum wage would be like china production. No choice for the worker. This 2$ and hour job or that one? No choice for the worker= all profit for the boss. Unions protect a process (that has some corruption, but so does every private and public sector of management so those balance out) and its workers. Unless you're under the assumption that all bosses are great and look out for their people... Working for this city sure taught me that every boss is a great one... On second thought, you're right. Instead of Christmas bonuses this year, I will be enrolling you in the jelly of the month club to show my appreciation."Its the gift that keeps giving the whole year Clark." The comments by those saying a company should lead by example and the company employees should dictate what the execs earn are way out in left field and not based in reality. Employees have a right to bargain collectively according to federal law and in many states there are no closed shops. However, any company has a right to be mismanaged, has a right to underpay their employees and has a right to close the company. This has been going on for many years and will not change. Union membership is just about a thing of the past in private industry and unions in public employment are breaking the government. You can tell me to GFY but that is not going to change things and will not fix the financial burden of govt. Wait until you property tgaxes double to pay teachers and lets see what you think?? Those jobs at Hostess will never come back and those employees will never earn what they did at Hostess. The front runner to buy the Twinkie and HO HO names is Grupo, a mexican bakery.Times are always changing and if we do not adapt to a workd economy things will only get worse.

No one is pointing any fingers at " greedy" employees, only the reality of dloing business in and working in what is now a world wide economy. We must compete with workers around the world. Baking is non-skill position that is easily taught . You can only get in salary and benefits what the marker will bear. GrupoBakers in Mexico probably will buy the Twinkies and Ho Ho name and will bake the product in Mexico and ship to the US. Grupo also bakes many other products under private labels that you are not aware of and you think they are US products. So, go ahead and be angry at those who point out what should be obvious to you and the p;rivate sector unions, but sadly is not. And, in the near future this will also become obvious to the public sector unions, who represent the only employees who are aboe to get increases in pay and benefits. The well is running dry. Public sector employees in this state are empowered by a state law. Eliminate that law and you have no power.

heres a brilliant business plan: make numerous tasty treats like twinkles, hohos, ding dongs, wonder bread, butternut bread etc.....the lets deliver these products to stores where they can be sold to the consumer for a profit, a profit for the store owner, and the product maker. But when we deliver the product to the store for sales let's use one truck for every product instead of using one truck to deliver all the products and let's give the drivers a paid day off for their birthday, and let's not have them unload the trucks let's have sone one else unload the product that we deliver. so we can have 3-5 trucks operating on the same route instead of one truck for each route.......brilliant.......McCormick Place mentality

Most people don't "envy" the rich...

What pisses them off is when their pay, jobs, benefits, pensions and health care are negatively impacted so the executives at the company for which they work can give themselves a giant raise at the expense of their employees.

That's not class warfare...that's called standing up to greed.
