42? Or 44?

No one seems able to count.

The media and the Department insist the total so far is 42.

But the CrimeInChicago website cites 44.

We've found one error in the CrimeInChicago site as they count they police shooting on 07 January. We're assuming the other error is the shooting on the expressway that the Illinois State Police are investigating - if it isn't a Chicago RD number, it probably isn't being counted in the stats.

We're currently researching another incident and may have some info on it later today.

Chicago Homicides January 2013: City Off To Worst Start Since 2002

At a Tuesday press conference, he noted his officers took more illegal guns off the streets than anywhere else in the country.

(Chicago currently has some of the strictest gun laws on the books, wouldn't we also have "more" illegal guns?)

"... When people get caught with (illegal) guns in New York, they go to jail," McCarthy said, according to the Tribune. "… As a result they're not carrying guns with impunity."

(Unlike in Cook County!)

With still one more day before January ends, the Chicago homicide rate in the first month of 2013 is off to its bloodiest start in more than a decade.

(Way to go, Chalkie!)

Homicides already pushed past 40 by Jan. 28, and during a record-breaking warm spell with temperatures higher than 60 degrees the following day, three more were slain in broad daylight.

(Weather has no impact on crime!)

The whole story is here:

The NYPD style works, there's been a decrease in the increase in the decrease of the decrease of the increase in shootings. Also the number seems like a lot but its not it just because there's been an unlucky increase in deaths in the percentage of people who are shot but are usually expected to live so we are just unlucky that they are aiming better so there's actually a decrease in the increase there if you will.

The guy personifies the saying that you can make stats say what you want them too. He should be an SNL skit.

They cannot agree on the numbers because the City is not through with playing games with the numbers. Maybe that is why the FBI does not accept Chicago Crime Stat numbers. FBI knows Chicago cooks the books on crime reporting. They were killing crime through lies and fraud nearly 30 years ago when I was hired and they are apparently still doing it.

Back then Pam Zekman did a story that not all beats in the city were staffed every day and night.

The City's response?

They enlarged the size of the beats in the City, thus making fewer beats throughout the City and then declared that all the beats are manned.

Not much has changed with the hierarchy, it is just a new crew of snake oil salesmen at the top.

Is there any way to track how many of those are with legal guns and how many with illegal guns?

My suspicion is that that stat would show that all are with illegal guns...because a shooting with a legally registered gun by the rightful owner is so rare that it gets its own headline.

The Chicago State University shooting and the Xpwy shooting are both on the stats. The department removed one homicide after the medical examiner ruled it a "natural causes" death even though the girl died after the father hit her several times (don't think that one is going to stay that way though).

Glen is nuts. There's no doubt about that.

But, that doesn't mean that what he is saying isn't true. Looking at this department, particularly the south side districts, the everyday police work is a fucking embarrassment. Case reports for shootings and homicides are a disgrace. They're below a 4th grade level. Go to the scene of any violent incident and all you see is a bunch of patrol and tact standing around doing nothing. No one gets stopped. Hell, the POs don't even ASK anyone if they saw anything. Not only do POs make no attempt to keep witnesses, they go out of their way to avoid finding witnesses. If its below 50 degrees or above 65 degrees, almost all POs sit in their car the whole time.

Calling most POs useless is just a nice way of saying it.

Blame McCarthy or Rahm if it makes you feel better, but the decline in this department rests solely with the people on it. Blame civil suits that OTHER cops have had for your laziness if you like, but the real culprit is that most cops love doing nothing.

So, what new fines, fees, taxes, and licenses has Rahm and the city council come up with today, anything?

Hey I have an idea.

Since the mentality of the city is to ticket, fine, and fee the working class to death, because they are the weak ones, and to make up for the failures in controlling the violence. How about we pass a new fine for leaving a dead body on the street!!

Yeah, fine the person(s) that lives in the homes where the dead body lies outside on the street. I'll bet the mayor can get it passed as some sort of littering or anti-dumping ordinance.

I mean we could try and fine the people doing the violence but everyone knows that they have no money or assets (in the traditional sense that we know of)

There's a new source of revenue for ya!

I totally get where you are coming from and to some extent I can understand where Glen is coming from despite his inability to be articulate.

However, one has to realize that the officers and how they act and how they perform is all reflects the current state of the department.

You will always have your dogs. You will always have workers.
Unfortunately, some workers weren't treated fairly, so now the department reaps what it sows.

The main thing is, we have no reason to care.
