Lightning Strikes Again

  • Devin Common told his mother he was going to a nearby South Side store around noon Tuesday.

Minutes later, his mother Kimberly Common saw him laying dead in the 7400 block of South Champlain.

He was her second son fatally gunned down since last summer in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

“I couldn’t believe it was happening all over again,” said Kimberly Common, who lost her son Antonio Common, 23, to gun violence in an alley near the corner store at 75th and Langley.
This must be the new media trend - find out how many relatives of the dead have also been killed by gunfire. Don't mention the thirty and forty arrests in 10 years since the age of 17. Don't mention the wheeling and dealing lifestyle that brings the "victims" into close contact with gun play.

No, this is a family tragedy. And we're sure someone from Rahm's office will be delivering a script to momma's house shortly about how we need more gun laws to protect these poor altar boys and honor students from the dangers of the street - you know, like just a few days ago where momma lost her four chillens to guns wielded by law abiding citizenry.

Hey how about we call out the Media in Shitcago...... STOP CALLING IT GUN VIOLENCE...... IT'S G A N G VIOLENCE and until it gets the proper name NOTHING will happen to solve it. It's not the guns it's the thuggery behind them. I assume (dangerous term) that by blaming the "thing" instead of the culture & race everbody feels better and it doesn't affect Shitcago and asa long as we don't have to admit it we don't have the problem .....Right ?

Why isn't CPD's press office pointing out the evidence of exemplary citizenship of these people?

Seriously: a press release saying "it's no surprise this guy got shot, given the company he kept." And then go on and list all the death and violence related activities the deceased had been caught up in.

Why doesn't this happen? Would the aldercreatures blow up if the CPD dissed their late constituents? Is that the problem? Or are we just totally paralyzed by politically correct notions about victimhood?

A 15-year-old majorette who performed at some of President Barack Obama's recent inauguration festivities has been shot to death in Chicago.

Police say Hadiya Pendleton died after she was shot in the back while hanging out with a group of teens in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park about 2:30 p.m.

Pendleton was taking shelter from the rain under a canopy, when an unidentified man or boy jumped a fence and ran toward the group and opened fire, police said. The shooter then fled in a vehicle. The man fled the scene in a vehicle. No arrests have been made.

A teenage boy was also shot in the leg during the shooting, which occurred in the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue, near King College Prep High School.

The pair was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, where Pendleton died at 3:10 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Hadiya belonged to the King College Prep High School band, which performed at several inaugural events in Washington, D.C.

Police said Pendleton was not a gang member and was most likely not the shooter’s intended target. But most of the teens with her, who also fled the scene, are believed to be gang members, police said.

Residents of the upscale, white-collar neighborhood were dismayed by the shooting, which some said was a first for their block.

"I was torn apart, shocked. I cried when I heard about it," said resident Robin Hollis, who has lived across the street from the park for about 20 years

Wait say that again...upscale white collar neighborhood! Do they do any fact checking. Since when is the s 4500 block of oakenwald an upscale white-collar neighborhood. anything to advance the liberal agenda and anti gun fodder. Fools

White House calls slaying of girl, 15, a 'terrible tragedy'

2:34 p.m. CST, January 30, 2013

"As it pushes for national gun control, the White House on Wednesday addressed a tragic shooting close to President Barack Obama's home in Chicago.

"Fifteen-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who last week performed at Obama's inaugural festivities, was killed when a gunman opened fire on a group of students just blocks from King College Prep and about a mile from Obama's home in Kenwood on the South Side.

"Presidential spokeman Jay Carney, asked about Hadiya's death, said it was a “terrible tragedy” any time a young person is struck down “with so much of their life ahead of them.”

“The president and first lady's thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hadiya Pendleton,” he said. “All of our thoughts and prayers are with her family.”

"Carney, asked about a petition urging President Barack Obama to attend Pendleton’s funeral, said he was not aware of the petition and had no scheduling announcements to make."

Just in. Ammo sales up quite nicely.

Olin (OLN) said the backlog for its Winchester ammunition unit has multiplied nearly 10-fold since the end of 2011, and it expects business to stay strong in the months ahead thanks partly to consumer demand that's being stoked by the debate about new firearms laws.

At the close of the year, Winchester's commercial backlog stood at $138 million, up from $92 million at the end of September. Since 2013 arrived, Olin said demand has only continued to swell, with backlog reaching approximately $280 million in January. By comparison, the backlog on Dec. 31, 2011, was $29 million -- that's a leap of about 9.65 times in 13 months.

The Clayton, Mo., company said in a press release late Monday that Winchester started seeing heightened interest around the time of the November election "and the elevated level of demand continued through the balance of the year." During the fourth quarter, commercial volume, covering shipments to retailers, rose more than 20% from the same quarter the prior year, Olin said.

******

Olin's comments on Winchester's sales line up with anecdotes that have been surfacing for several weeks regarding high demand. While it's only one sample market, some stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, such as a Dallas Dick's Sporting Goods location and a Cabela's in Allen, are noticeably short of many ammunition brands and types, in particular popular ones such as the .22 long.

Prices, at least in cases, are rising as well. At a Fort Worth gun show in late December, 9mm cartridges were selling in the $17.95 to $18.95 range per box. Five weeks later, at another gun show in nearby Lewisville, dealers were displaying prices of $29.95 to $31.95.

I remember that place 40-50 years ago - ROUGH AREA. There was a big public grade school there, Oakenwald School, long gone now. It was all-black...1962 when I'd go by? Abandoned RR tracks, the Chicago Junction used to fly up and over the IC mains and head west for the Stockyards, there was also a branch of the "L" there, shared the right-of-way. You can still see the embankments. That stretch was never Pill Hill, no way.
