No thanks. As fucked up as our department is we still have more freedom to do what we want than the smaller departments throughout the country.

Any of the applicants that ultimately get hired by APD cannot be counted by rahm boy as new Chicago hires, or can they ? rahmboy is very sneaky about things of this nature.

Atlanta will give you a stroke.

Dealing with hurricanes might be a treat considering dealing with Tiny and Co. plus you might end up with a real pension and insurance

There is no pension.

PENSIONS
Defined benefit plans are provided for general employees hired prior to July 1, 2001, police officers and firefighters. These plans, created by state law, provide employees with a source of defined retirement benefits determined by salary, length of service and age at retirement. The three defined benefit programs also provide for death and disability benefits under certain circumstances.

General employees hired after July 1, 2001 are enrolled in a defined contribution pension plan. Open enrollment for other general employees is in process. The defined contribution plan allows employees to determine how their pension funds are invested. Upon leaving or retiring from city service, employees may withdraw their invested pension contributions and a portion of the city's match, based on the vesting schedule.

I dunno. Not too familiar with Atlanta except I think you would stay busy there.

But the south is a strange place. Our last county sheriff is in prison for gambling and racketeering related issues.

Both the County and City Evidence Rooms were operated as "candy stores". Cash, drugs, guns and any recovered propriety that would look good in your home...all gone.

The NC State lab had some problems with un-certified techs. Thousands of cases and convictions in peril.

Big ole country boys in pickups that love fighin' with (then eluding - it's a NASCAR thing) the police. Most of the women have more testosterone that the big ole country boys.

Can't swing a cat without hitting a meth lab (it's the new moonshine).

Yup,the south is a strange place.

I have eight years on the job. In 2011 I thought about applying for them. I looked at how many vacation days you get: you get about two weeks! You don't get a pension. You get a 401K type of retirement. Your annual cost of living raise is dependent on their city council.

After looking at all of that, it was a complete no brainer. I'm staying in Chicago.

Climate is the only thing better in Atlanta . It's run by the same type of clowns that we have here. I went thru the process a few years ago thinking it could be an option; it's a completely screwed up city just like us but without the snow. You would be better off going to AZ or NV.

Go to Madison and Pulaski any time of the day there’s Atlanta. Now the outlying suburb’s are great.

According to immense data compiled in
"Strategic Relocation-North American Guide to Safe Places", Georgia is rated badly.

Gun liberty is poor, Violent crime is high 488/100K, property crime 3,901/100K. Most of the crime is in and around the Atlanta metro area.

Very high density population threats--170 people per square mile, 18th highest in the nation.

Atlanta is the 22nd worst traffic metro in the nation, red light cameras are used.
Not a good place to relocate to, or to be in during a time of social meltdown.

I was originally a cop in downstate IL (Decatur) and became a Dallas Tx cop in '85, just retired in 2012. To those saying the south is weird-they're right. Theres good and bad here, the ol boys still ain't over the Civil War, and they think all yankees are liberals. The weather is good though, its easier to get around Dallas than Chicago, and like anything else in life there's trade offs.

A troll says: Atlanta, ha ha. This is the city that thinks Andrew Young was a great mayor. If you go there, you go from the pot into the fire. Blow it off, Dallas is the place you ought to be. Hotter than hell in the summer and only cool in the winter. Your pay will be less too. But Texas is way better than this shit hole.

Hey
1/16/2013 08:33:00

Are you the same DPD guy who had the hard on for the ROISD? Must be a slow FOIA day for ya. Anyway Dallas easier to get around than Chicago? You must really have never traveled from downstate to the big city while you lived here because you my friend are mistaken. Dallas is Englewood without the snow, the roads are a complete cluster, the people are nuts, and the schools are crap. Fort Worth is closer to Chicago in feeling but it stops there. Dallas is a giant Cicero, don't waste your time; go to AZ, NM, or NV. I made the mistake and look forward to leaving.

HAHA!! This is why I love this horrible shithole. This entire blog for years is noting but rants and comments about how horrible and hopeless the CPD is, but when compared to another city, all the intense pride and affection for CPD materializes. SCC, please post more things like this. Its like in high school when you terrorize your younger brother, but God help the man who does the same to him, for the man will suffer an ass beating! Right off the Atlanta PD recruitment website:

"Employees may accrue a maximum of 11 hours of compensatory time per month."

"All accrued compensatory time must be used before the end of the calendar year in which it was earned"

And from my APD buddy who works in the 007/006/005 equivalent, OT is pretty much non-existant and court time is rarely compensated for (hours swapped). You're better off here as fucked up as shit is.

Don't even think about it. You have no idea of how spoiled we are working here. I would bet about 25% of the things we do in a normal weekend night would get you stripped and de-certified in AZ.
