Mayor Rips the Press
- Stung by recent claims that Evergreen Park Police traffic stops may be guided by racial profiling, Mayor James Sexton came out swinging at Monday night’s village board meeting.
With the words “…and justice for all” still echoing in council chambers after the Pledge of Allegiance, Sexton immediately began counter-punching, defending his administration and accusing the downtown news media of being interested more in fantasy than fact.
“I’m not going to let a couple of reporters tarnish the reputation of our police,” Sexton said, referring to a
recent analysis of traffic-stop data conducted by the Better Government Association FOX 32 News.
Sexton ripped the BGA/FOX 32 News analysis as severely flawed. “There’s an old saying: ‘Figures lie and liars figure.’ You can get statistics to say anything you want,” he said.
Someone get this guy a beer or two.

Refreshing to hear a police chief stand up for the work his department does and not feel he has to apologize. Race baiting makes headlines, the media should concentrate on black on black violence.

I reside in the Beverly community immediately adjacent to Evergreen Park. My 22 year daughter was late on a light at 99th and Kedzie last week and got a citation from the Evergreen Park police. My wife received a speeding ticket on 103rd Street in October of last year. We are WHITE!!!! FOX 32 the supposed right wing outlet here in Chicago is no different than any other liberal news outlet. Is it just coincidence that this story comes out during Black History Month? Not hardly!!! This "poor me" mantra is getting really, really, really, really, old.
PS: by the way they both were guilty as charged and deserved the ticket. Oh well, taking responsibility for your actions, a concept foreign to certain communities.

Went to high school w/J Sexton jr. He was an outstanding athlete, academically inclined, and a really good dude. Doesnt surprise me that Jimmy's Dad is one of the good ones as well.

It's no secret that like many other suburban departments, Evergreen Park PD is a revenue generating department. Traffic stops are done in a strategic manner in which there is no option but to not only tow a vehicle and charge an admin fee, but to ticket the vehicle for being illegally parked before it is towed. Get more tows! Your doing a great job getting all those admin tows son... here is a promotion. Hours? not a problem, work whenever you want, just keep them tows coming in. Can you not see that it is easy to start profiling the no valids when under that kind of pressure to produce????

Having had many interactions with the E.P.P.D. over the years and all have been as you describe, professional and positive. As an outside agency leo, I am have been impressed each time I have been in their HQ. They are a bunch of good guys and gals. The FOX-32 smear is undeserved.

I loved how the two shitheads were almost in tears on camera telling how they were not speeding. Their noses were growing during the spot. Everyday you drive east or west on 95th st and car comes flying past you. Nine out of ten times it's a shithead. Thats the simple truth. There is no enforcement in Chicago and they think their outlandish driving is acceptable where ever they go. It's good to see EPPD out there doing what we should be doing!!!

The BGA does a lot of good and does bring attention to some areas that sorely need the light of day. However, they are deeply involved in fund raising and in keeping their name out there in the press. I did not see the presentation about the Evergreen PD so I cannot comment on it. If the statistics indicate that a certain race is stopped more and written citation more then other races, it certainly is something to look at, but that does not mean the police department is racist or is profiling. It seems the media and the race pimps are always looking for something to hang their hat on and are afraid to talk about what might be the real cause of these numbers. It can't possibly be that everyone who drives through the area are of a certain race or ethnic background; or certain races or ethnic background are worse drivers, or certain races or ethnic backgrounds commit more crimes? No, we cannot consider that. That would be unfair.
If you're jumping up and down celebrating so be it. The EPD will write you soon enough. Once you're identified as a Chicagoan, skin color won't matter you'll be written up. When that day comes don't be an a**hole to the EP copper,just take your ticket and;plead guilty.

excellent response from mayor sexton. i have been stopped by evergreen park police and i have always encountered professional and well-mannered officers. and just because evergreen park borders a portion of chicago's southside ghetto doesn't mean they're profiling. blacks are the majority of the area. it is like saying if you go to englewood and when you stop a black person it is racist. englewood is 99% black so do the math you fuckin' ignorant, idiotic and naive media. this same rule applies to evergreen park's situation.

But for some reason I was pulled over near 98th Kedzie. When I asked the young officer, after producing DL and POI and stating MY office why I was pulled over, he replied a someone called in a suspicious veh. matching my cars description. Yeah sure junior, as if I havent used that one a thousand times myself. MY crime that day was DWH (driving while Hispanic). What did anyone think the Mayor of that burg would say?

I was driving home from work last summer and was stopped on Califonia for doing 12 over the limit. the copper ran my plates and license then gave me a sort of a warning form that he explained is used to compile statistics for the ucr code reporting regarding racial profiling. This is a total lie concocted by fox news. They stop everybody. And by the way, Fox News Chicago is a semi lefty outfit, not on the same page as the national fox News channel.

I helped her change the light bulb because her husband was at work and she had to drive through Evergreen Park again that day. By the way this woman is a Nurse at Christ Hospital. Karma is a bitch and I avoid spending any money in that town.

I know one of his friends and they say Sexton is a decent guy. He is still a politician though so to be trusted minimally, but as held to the standard of his peers he is supposed to be one of the better ones. He does for the most part stick up for his cops unlike the pukes in this City. The media coddles the politicians like an expensive call girl hoping they'll get to fall in love. I am also a PO and live in Evergreen Park and by looks appear to be Hispanic but am Italian. I have never been stopped by EPPD for your bullshit DWH, though I had been stopped for minor traffic. They were nothing but professional when I dealt with them. I call BULLSHIT on your post.
I drive in EP on a daily basis and every day there's the shithead from the city driving like a maniac weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed on 95th. They (yeah, you black drivers) think it's the e-way when passing through EP, though it's CLEARLY posted at only 30mph.
EPPD keep up the great work and keep writing those citations to ALL that can't drive civilly.

Sexton is a decent guy, but their chief is a complete tool. Most of the coppers who work there will tell you outright that hes a pompous jag, but hey, it's a job. This is not new in Evergreen Park. I grew up there when it was Everwhite and everyone got tickets for speeding. I graduated HS with the Chief Mike Saunders and you won't meet a finer person. The Mayor is Sexton.

Do not speed and you will not have a problem. I am sure EPPD stops numerous ODPO every day and give numerous a pass except for the real dickheads. Do not speed and show respect when stopped.

Evergreen Park PD are a great group of coppers. They have always extended professional courtesy to me and my family. (In fact, as early as this week, thanks for reminding daughter about rules of the road. Its nice to know other departments look out for each other.) God bless guys/gals and stay safe. When driving in EP or OL make sure you watch your rear and side view mirrors and drive under 30 mph. They love to suddenly appear behind you and start clocking your speed.
