Mattress Pads and 2 Degrees
Couple of items forwarded to us this week.
First up, the D-unit is now required to supply mattress pads to prisoners they keep overnight. This isn't that big a deal as the district lockups already have to supply sleepy prisoners with pads following a court settlement from a year or two back. Rumor is that some lockups are asking prisoners their "sleep number." We guess if they're keeping someone on the camera for an interrogation, it makes sense lest some wise-ass lawyer claim that the prisoner's discomfort led to them confessing to a crime. Anyone else missing the days of the old Maxwell Street station with the trough cut in the floor?
More interesting is the "2 Degrees of Separation" strategy we've started hearing about. It's exactly what it sounds like - a poor-man's Kevin Bacon game, but with some statistical backing. The theory as we understand it is that persons with two-degrees of separation from recent homicide victims are more likely themselves to be victims and shooters. Individuals are given a "heat" rating, as in "how close are they to being sent to the hell they've surely earned."
Our inner cynic says, "No shit Sherlock" seeing as how like attracts like and decent people aren't likely to be hanging around on dope corners with dope dealers slinging dope and getting shot for their troubles. So is this the ultimate endgame with Contact Cards? The more often you connect with a past/present/future Chalkie victim, the more....what exactly? Are we going to start babysitting these idiots? Are we going to snatch them off the street for their own safety? Are we going to put signs on their lawns?
We just wonder at the deterrent aspect.

We should pay more tax money and give it to these poor ghetto dwellers. And send more police from tax paying districts there too. They are worthy of more.

I have been given this 2 degree sheet for my beat.
its just silly. Its signed by Joe Patterson. It has names and addresses. The sheet directs officers to make as much contact with the subjects as possible. If my name isn't on the contact cards, then i wont be apart of the lawsuit that is sure to follow.
If it wasn't for the bangers getting themselves killed 2 weeks after they shoot someone else, the city's homicide "clearance" rate would be way lower than 26%.
Getting locked up is a joke these days. Prisoners are treated like they are in a fking hotel. We have to take these scumbags to hospital for every ache and pain they report- and some of these lockup personnel are so shaky and scared that one hiccup out of a prisoner will have them transported to the ER. How much taxpayer money has to go to ensuring the comfort and health of criminals and low-lives of society?? Go try that bs in a foreign jail- you think in Mexico, Russia, Africa, or Pakistan they give a shit about wether you have a pillow to sleep on, or a stomach ache? Maybe that's why everyone comes to this dumping ground of a country- you can commit murder and still get three meals/day and have the best healthcare in the system while never having to lift a finger. America is like the lazy absent father who is divorced from his wife, and all the kids want to live with him because they know he don't give a shit and they can do whatever they want.

2 degrees..now we have become there body guards. Order or info or whatever it is states that we should keep watch over these people. Sounds like police protection to me. Next we'll be taking them food shopping and shoveling there sidewalk least they get shoot.

016th district taxpayers should contact their aldermen and complain loudly of the poor police service. They slam us with ever-increasing taxes and continue to take away police protection. I blame McCarthy for this, he is not concerned about the 016 district citizens.
I'm sure rahms's neighborhood is heavily patrolled.

Amazing. Crazy throwing-of-all-books at alleged shooters of Hadiya Pendleton, 100 murder charges each or something -- and no tox screen released on victims? Whole world supposed to revolve around this, yet the particulars are none of our business.
No tox screens on CPS "honor students" who stole boats in the middle of the night and drowned themselves in the Fox River some years ago, either -- although I understand that taxpayers picked up the funerals.
If there is to be a "Hadiya's Law," it should read "You will not have a law named after you if you are killed or injured engaging in illegal activities."
...and now it is coming out that Newtown shooter Adam Lanza's idiot mother kept the whole gun cabinet in Adam's room, "where he lived isolated with guns and violent computer games" and was known to do whole classwork presentations without ever speaking...
