MegaSports Blows

MegaSports isn't a place we'd spend a dime at - especially now.  The following is an e-mail we received from a concerned reader:
  • I was just at Mega Sports in Plainfield. I live just inside the Cook County border and Mega sports is the best gun store/range within a reasonable distance from my house. So I'm at the counter on Sunday and want to take a look at a Daniel Defense AR-15. When they do the obligatory FOID card check, the guy behind the counter asks what county I live in which they had never done before. I say Cook County, and he tells me they are prohibited from selling me any semi-auto rifle (in Libtard-speak = assault weapon). I ask why, and he says there is a Cook County law/ordinance that prohibits them from making the sale. Being well versed on the 2nd Amendment issues and laws, I tell him there is no such law that prohibits the sale of any otherwise legal firearm to a Cook County resident. I explain that even if Cook County prohibited possession of a certain firearm, I am nevertheless permitted to buy the gun and keep it outside of Cook County (which I did for numerous years with my 92FS Barretta while living in Chicago). He then backtracks and says it's a new store policy dictated by the owner. When I ask for the reasoning behind this new policy, he has no further information but snidely says I can still hold the rifle, but cannot make the purchase.

Now my bullshit antennae are up because I sensed that other things were off in the store, namely that they "carded" me when I walked in the front door meaning I had to show a FOID to walk inside which never happened on prior visits. There was also a camera next to the "doorman" taking photos of everyone coming in, which I think is new but may have not noticed on prior visits. There were also numerous signs prohibiting all cell-phone use, even in the bathroom, which was never prohibited in the past because I had used my cell on my last Glock purchase not 3 months ago to consult with my brother right at the counter prior to making my purchase.

I thought you might find this interesting and worth investigating or posting about.  Not sure why Mega Sports is so paranoid lately or whether Cook County is putting unfair pressure on them or using intimidation tactics, i.e. threats of sting operations, prosecutions for "straw purchases," etc. But, based on the new policy, I would bet that not even police who live in Cook could buy a semi-auto rifle. I think the whole situation is complete BS and Mega Sports is cowing down to leftist pressure and infringing on the 2nd Amendment rights of Cook County residents.
So MegaSports is denying the exercise of your Second Amendment Rights based on non-existent laws and some "company policy"?  We'd have to recommend finding some establishment happier to accept your hard earned money.  Recommendations are encouraged in the comment section.

I think Mega Sports is working with the FED's. Do not trust them, they are going to deny your legal purchase because of reeducation plans. Only guards guarding the liberal elite will be allowed "assault" weapons.

Gee, does that mean we should bring our lawyer with us if we go there to insure our rights and the possibility they are placing illegal rules in our way to purchase a legal weapon to keep in our vacation home in Ogle county? Hmmmm... if they are photographing us, then we can videotape and record our visit?

And the asshole employees at Mega-Sports really believe that their actions are going to sway votes in the direction desired by the NRA? They're even more idiotic than the trolls who want to curtail assault rifle purchases. You almost need to carry a scorecard to keep track of the idiots on both sides of this debacle.

Had the same thing happen a few months ago there. They card you to get in, then re-card you if you want to hold a weapon. They now call your name out if you want to look at holsters etc. Have not, nor will I be going back ever.
They definitely have a hard on for Cook County residents.
Thanks a##holes, my money will spend else where.

I wish the employee had been upfront about the "policy", and I hope it is official, something along the lines of "No sales to Cook County residents, especially law enforcement and other government employees and elected officials."

Frankly, I'd like to see arms suppliers and manufacturers abandon your state and refuse to sell to it.

See Magpul in Colorado, and the hundreds of companies refusing to do business in New York.

I know you are not the one at fault, SCC. I'm not disrespecting you, or most of your fellow officers, at all.

But it is foolish for the rest of us to continue to supply those who keep electing the would be tyrants who seek to disarm us all.

Maybe they are joining the rest of the weapons industry in not selling to officers-depts in areas which prohibit possession for regular citizens.

Oh, and I almost missed this: "So MegaSports is denying the exercise of your Second Amendment Rights based on non-existent laws and some 'company policy'?"

It's not MegaSports, SCC. If I understand the situation correctly, they are acting in completely justified self-preservation.

It is your state and city governments that deny the free exercise of the right to arms to the citizens of Illinois and Chicago.

You, sir, do not exercise that right yourself.

You exercise an illegitimate power granted to law enforcement personnel in your state, a power that the vast majority of your fellow citizens do not have.

Throw the bastards out, SCC. Get the laws changed.

Or move to a free state, and stop propping up a corrupt tyranny.

Because the day is coming when you will be facing a freely armed citizenry, and they will quite properly not have much patience with you and your brothers in uniform, especially those who have enthusiastically enforced a set of insanely illegitimate laws.

I'm sorry to sound so harsh towards someone I believe is truly well meaning and honest. You have shown yourself to a friend of the right to arms many time.

However...lie down with hogs, get up smelling like manure. Dogs, fleas. Guilt by association. You know the drill.

Time's running out. June, isn't that the Supreme Court's deadline?

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I wanted to purchase an AR chambered in 22 cal. The sales guy consulted with his manager, who looked like he just awakened from a bunker, proceeds to tell me that their store policy prohibits any sales in an AR platform to anyone with a Chicago address. NO WAY would I ever do business there again.

I hear Gat Guns in Dundee is the place to go

Rinks in Lockport is far friendlier, cheaper and much better attitude towards it's customers than Megasports.

Have to admit Megasports has a better selection and has more ammo right now.

As for the Cell Phone usage that seems to be something a lot of gunstores are banning inside the store (including Rinks).

MegaSports has been run in an unusual fashion since the beginning, but this is not unknown for any gun shop, or even a licensee or manufacturer. People who own an FFL tend to interpret laws in whatever way they understand them, and generally take the least path of resistance... resistance from the authorities, anyway.

I understand from friendly salesmen that MS and other close-in gun stores are "shopped" fairly often by slightly-less-than-obvious undercover agents, out on a fishing trip.

In this hightened season of political stoopid, it is not hard to believe that Cook County and it's various Lordships are out trying to make a point.

From day one, I did not understand the need to flash an FOID at the door, except it does do one thing: There is one central check point where all that one person has to do is to carefully examine credentials for validity. I know it gets checked again upon purchase, but checking at the door relieves the merchant from yet another potential BS charge of allowing a mere uncertified minion to touch a firearm. It's their FFL, it's their discretion.

Mega Sports employees have good customer contact skills, but everything they do is literally under close observation by the owner. Nothing happens in that store without him believing that he knows about it.

We get to vote with our wallet. Nearby to MS is the very small but friendly "Rinks" gun shop, and the newly re-located "Article 2" up in Lombard. Still standing their ground is "Midwest" in Lyons. All of them have ranges and less draconian internal policies. I believe Mitch Shore is still selling to the PoPo. Bass Pro in Gurnee has a very nice range. I appreciate that Cabellas in Hoffman does a huge business in firearms, but screw 'em if they don't think to provide a range. GAT is operational and expanding.

As far as places to shoot, and it is rumored that some Police do this even when not being paid and if they can get ammo, there are fewer each day. CPD utilized the Aurora Sports Club for their Patrol Rifle Carbine Quals with great success, and it offers any time access and ranges out to 600 yards.

Vote with your wallet. If you don't like something, express yourself in writing (the best way) and let management know about it. In the mean time, explore other options. For many years, the best way to get guns was through the internet, using GunBroker and having them shipped to a friendly FFL for $25. Paying retail sucks, and why not buy out of state via internet and avoid taxes (for now)?

There are still two viable Gun Shows, the one in Wheaton Fairgrounds is on the 1st Sunday each winter month is far superior to the daisy chain at Kane County on the 2nd Sunday. Idiotic management and disregard for the attendees has been a hallmark at that St Charles show- go to Wheaton, you might like it. None of them hold a candle to the long ago gone Lake County Show... which itself was a victim of governmental pressure (of the power-money set) exerted by manipulating law enforcement.

Actually the policy goes back as far as 2003 when I first walked in the door. They wouldn't sell a chicago resident a handgun until the Heller case. They still won't sell you an AR15 or other "evil looking" rifles now. They've been covering their asses for a long time. Also, the liability waiver for the range was first implemented about three years ago. Since the panic buying started they have changed their hours of operation drastically, started asking for FOIDS for practically everything, calling out names for service, and rationing ammo.

It seems to be an issue at other stores as well. Watch out for DICK'S SPORTING GOODS. I stopped in to look at ammo and was happy to find some available. Went to purchase it and when I gave them my FOID, they entered the number into the register. It took a moment to realize what they had done. When I asked why they did that when it is not required by any law, they couldn't answer and started to get evasive. Asked for a manager. They got on the radio, 10 minutes later told me a manager would not be coming out, but that the reason for collecting the number is "store policy" because they are "hyper compliant" with the law. They couldn't explain to me what their privacy policies were, data retention periods were, or what "law" they were hyper compliant with.

Not quite the "carding and recording" just to get in the door, but this is scary on a number of levels. Where else is this going on.

There is no such thing as a "firearm owners ID" in federal law. Have fun convincing a jury that a gun dealer HAS to make every sale possible.

Sounds like they're protecting themselves. Don't like it? Change the government in Chicago and Illinois for one that respects everyone's rights.

I've had Midway decline to sell me magazines because my ZIP code -- but not my actual location -- resolves to inside Cincinnati. That city used to have a magazine limit, but Ohio state law preempts that and eliminates that restriction. I still do business with Midway, because I know it's their right to say "sorry, that's too much risk for us".

Rink's in Lockport is just ok as far as indoor ranges go. They have about 12 dimly lit shooting lanes with the old style crank and cable target movers. My biggest complaint though was the lack of ventilation, whenever I leave after a decent range session the amount of lead and powder residue in my nose and throat is ridiculous. Also, it's freezing in the winter and almost unbearably hot in the summer. I have rarely been impressed by their customer service either, especially from the rather portly gentleman. That said, it is only like $9...

Mega Sports has always been a place to check out what you are considering for purchase; but buy somewhere else with better prices. The range was one of the nicer ones in the area and the employees have always been friendly. This all before the major renovation. I haven't been there for quite a while and haven't experienced the card at the door policy. I am a Chicago resident and was there one day with a buddy of mine from Naperville who was looking at ARs. The guy at the counter made a point of not letting me touch any semi auto rifles due to my residency. Upon questioning, he said he was not allowed to even sell me a Mini 14 with a 5 round magazine as with a magazine change it would become an evil assault rifle. My intended place of keeping such a rifle makes no difference. Vacation homes make no difference, you are branded by the address on your ID. The reason for this policy as he told me was that the owner was very versed in Chicago rules as he is an ex CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER. I have no idea if that is true or not.

I can under Mega Sports worries and concerns but they don’t have to be so arrogant and ignorant. These policies have in place for a long time at the store. I was treated rudely when they found out that I lived in Chicago and I will never spend a penny in there.

Mega Sports won't let any one in with out a FOID Card. I asked them what if I was from a different state. Since Illinois is the only state with a FOID card. They told me I wouldn't be allowed in the store.
Also my buddy went there. He is a FFL dealer from Indiana. They would let him in the store. He told them I am a dealer. I could purchase anything and leave with it that day. They didn't care and turned him away.
Mega sports is making up their own rules and its causing problems. Now people think its the law.

Don't forget about the price gouging.

Go to Rinks or Gat guns. There is also some great online gun shops.

MegaSports were very good to CPD in the past. The owner knocked $150 bucks off the price of a S&W 4586. Later purchased a S&W Performance Center Model 629 .44 Magnum from them. They knocked off $200 bucks. Don't know what happened. That's too bad, huge selection of guns & ammo.

3/21/2013 04:28:00 AM

When was this? This is nothing new to me over there. Over a decade ago I went there looking for a .38 for a backup gun. I identified myself as a Chicago police officer and told him what I wanted and the salesman showed me a used Ruger at a decent price of about $200. I was all set to fill out the paperwork when the guy comes back and tells me he can't sell me the gun. I told him I was a police officer, showed him my badge and I.D. along with my FOID card which was already on the table. He says he's sorry but it's store policy not to sell to any Chicago resident. My buddy was there and was going to buy a nice .22 target pistol and the guy tells him I can sell you the .22 but he (me) can't buy anything. My buddy says No way. If you aren't going to sell him a gun I'm not buying anything here either. We both left pretty pissed off. I never went back. They won't get any of my money even if they change their policy, not a penny. This was over 10 years ago. To be fair, this was about the time the former mayor of Chicago was sending out teams to try to do false straw purchases dressed like gang members to surrounding gun shops to try to shut them down but I told them who I was from the start and showed them my credentials. I was still refused service. So I went to Rinks where I paid over $400 for a Smith&Wesson .357 and was happy. Screw them and their policy.

I was at Mega Sports on Sunday also. Went to pick up a couple of magazines before they become extinct. Yeah they do card at the door – keeps out the riff raff…I bought a couple of magazines, they were overpriced, but I was there and to go back home and then head out to GAT Guns – fuel and time , I just bought them.

But while I was checking out – a dressed for success blonde walks in and inquires with the doorman about renting a gun and shooting at the range… she asks about the need for an FOID card… they explain. She asks if they can assist her in getting one…(which is why there is a camera just inside the front door, the only one I saw anyway.) they say yes.

So she then jiggles and bats her eyes and asks if she can “just go back there for a little while with out having the FOID card.” And they tell her no and she huffs out and gets in a car with 2 other men. I asked the cashier if that happens a lot and he says 3 or 4 times a week that someone tries to enter with out a FOID card.

I wasn’t inquiring about guns, but the service and staff were ok. I wanted 2 17 rd mags he tried to sell me 15 rd mags for the same price. They didn’t have any 9mm or 40 cal. ammo

I was down in Bloomington the weekend before – 10-8 outfitters is a nice place, small, good guys running it. Helpful friendly, did I say small??

MegaSports not selling ARs & AKs to Cook county residents is nothing new. This has been their store policy for many years. Any cops who live inside of Cook county wanting to buy an AR from them need to bring a letter signed be their Chief stating it is for "Duty use". Honestly I don't blame the owner of Megasports for watching his own ass in this shithole litigation happy state. Regardless, I would never buy a firearm of any type from them anyway, but that's their store policy and you are free to spend your money elsewhere.

Find a friendly/local FFL who will do a transfer to you and find a dealer out of state who has what you are looking for. Prices online are much better as long as you know where to look and if you buy it from a dealer outside of IL who ships it here to your FFL, you will avoid having to pay ANY state sales tax. You will typicall only have to pay shipping and the transfer fee @ your local FFL which I usually no more than $30 by a legit FFLs.

Sorry to say even before thy doubled the size of the store at Megasports, they were arrogant and less than customer friendly. Starting with policy you can only use targets purchased from them on the range. And while I understand the policical climate today , I think the employee's there are confused as to who the enemy really is. I was there several times when my son-in-law was trying out some pistols before he decided what to buy and there was no ackonwledgement we were regular customers or had been there before . The prices are skyhigh and they are preying on a captive market, that said there is no reason to treat lawful gun owners with a FOID card like criminals and make the experience in that store unpleasent. It's store owners like this that will determine what happens with the next generation of gun enthusiasts & shooters and they are doing a poor job of promoting the sport and keeping the 2nd Amendment alive. So when the hysertia is over and things got back to some type of normal, who will want to set foot in there. Vote with your wallet there are several Family owned small business's that do a much better job and have already been mentioned here, Midwest , Rinks & Chucks....

By banning sales to cook county and the city of Chicago residents Mega Sports is basically enacting and enforcing their own "assault weapons" ban! Hes is doing all the work for them! idiot!
Mega sports is taking the low road out all due to monetary reasons. The owner doesn't want to pay for a lawyer if he gets sued, plain and simple.

With regard to MegaSports, here's the deal ladies and gentelmen. I have a source who tells me that their policies have become over the top because they can.Did you see the expansive new addition on MegaSports and all that money that's been poured into the building, they were able to do that not because of the walk in sales. I'm told that their internet sales are through the roof and they are not about to lose their cash cow.Bottom line, it's a business and they realize their new policies are strict but they are protecting their investment. They realize they may lose Cook County sales and Chicago patrons but even if they lost a third of those patron it doesn't matter when you have the entire U.S. to sell to. Please remember, MegaSports realizes they have the S/W burbs market monopolized. Plus, No gun store in Chicago, hell, they know, regardless of your feelings. You'll be back.

regretfully they are right about cook county:
Sec. 54-212. - Assault weapons and large capacity magazines; sale prohibited; exceptions.

(a)
No person shall manufacture, sell, offer or display for sale, give, lend, transfer ownership of, acquire or possess any assault weapon or large capacity magazine. This subsection shall not apply to:
(1)
The sale or transfer to, or possession by any officer, agent, or employee of Cook County or any other municipality or state or of the United States, members of the armed forces of the United States; or the organized militia of this or any other state; or peace officers to the extent that any such person named in this subsection is otherwise authorized to acquire or possess an assault weapon and/or large capacity magazine and does so while acting within the scope of his or her duties;
(2)
Transportation of assault weapons or large capacity magazine if such weapons are broken down and in a nonfunctioning state and are not immediately accessible to any person.
(b)
Any assault weapon or large capacity magazine possessed, sold or transferred in violation of Subsection (a) of this section is hereby declared to be contraband and shall be seized and disposed of in accordance with the provisions of Section 54-213
(c)
Any person found in violation of this section shall be sentenced to not more than six months imprisonment or fined not less than $500.00 and not more than $1,000.00, or both.
(d)
Any person who, prior to the effective date of the ordinance codified in this section, was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine prohibited by this section shall have 90 days from the effective date of the ordinance to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution hereunder:
(1)
To remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from within the limits of the County of Cook; or
(2)
To modify the assault weapon or large capacity magazine either to render it permanently inoperable or to permanently make it a device no longer defined as an assault weapon or large capacity magazine; or
(3)
To surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to the Sheriff or his designee for disposal as provided below.

Nonetheless, they are arrogant strokes. I have been in there maybe four or five times over the past ten years and they have always been complete douchebags. The first couple of times I stopped in out of convienence. After that I did return with my buddy who for some inexplicable reason likes the place. Everytime the have lived up to the gunshop stereotype which is becoming all too prevalent these days ... Ignorant, arrogant money grabbing morons.

They are the typical know it all blowhards dispensing their "expertise" despite having no idea what they are talking about. My 7 year old kid knows more about firearms and the shooting sports than their entire staff.

Every time I have shopped in there the prices were ridiculous. I tried getting a few things but they held to their delusional prices and I walked out every time.

The sad fact is they aren't the only ones. Midwest is filled with the same douchebags. Shore Galleries is run by a thieving, fraudulent con artist whose satff will rip you off any chance they can. Im not sure if he's still in business but there was that ex-cop, crook on Grand Ave just west of Harlem, Illiois Gunworks who called himself a "Gunsmith" and did work that made the 3 stooges look like trained professionals. The owner of Gunslinger on SW HWY was in prison last time I checked, so was the owner of GunWorld in Bensenville.

The anti-gun zealots in Chicago and Crook County have made the gun business just like booze during prohibition ..... If you want some you get stuck paying way to much to some shady thief who acts like he's doing you a favor taking your money.

I went to Article 2 to qualify for my IROCC card right after I retired. My own department, CPD, would not allow me to qualify in the range I had been using for 27 years. And I cannot qualify anywhere in Chicago. Article 2 treated me better than my own police department.

Fuck Rahm, fuck Prenkwinkel.

If time permits in his busy schedule, talk to Seiser, he can help with all of your firearm needs.

Please remember, MegaSports realizes they have the S/W burbs market monopolized. Plus, No gun store in Chicago, hell, they know, regardless of your feelings. You'll be back.

3/21/2013 12:08:00 PM

Don't think so. I've got a long memory for things I don't think are right. Hell, I'm still not buying Ben & Jerry's, and I never will again. Too bad. I love that Cherry Garcia, but they supported a cop killer.

Mega Sports is price gouging on PMags. Retail price is about $14.99 and Mega Sports is selling them for $44.99. Don't go to this place.

talked to Atwood Armory about their raffle, explained that I'm CPD, and the lady said that she is not sure that she can send an AR-15 to Chicago if...when I win the raffle, of course I was dumbfounded, so it seems crook county is pulling some bs yet again

3/21/2013 08:14:00 AM

It has to go through an FFL. And there aren't any in Chicago.

You may want to check the G.O.'s and local ordinances.

Under FEDERAL lAW they have to sell you a weapon if you have a valid FOID card. If they do not, you can sue them for discrimination. Get the clerks name and the owners and find an attorney. Sue them civily.
3/21/2013 02:10:00 AM

Wrong pal. It's a private business they can sell or not sell to anyone they want. Just because you have a driver's license it doesn't mean someone has to sell you a car either. It's their loss.

3/21/2013 07:29:00 PM

I didn't know they sold cars at Megasports too. What floor is that?

What did it for me was last year at MS after paying $100 dollars for range fees and their ammo I was saying how Obama would be going after gun owners in a 2nd term and the clerk behind the counter told me; "But Romney will take away my Social Security!" I never went back to MS.

A little tidbit about Megasports... They have either fired or forced out every Vereran that's ever worked there.

My brother went in there a few weeks back with his wife and kids to make a purchase. The guy at the counter asked for his FOID and he showed it, but said his wife and kids would have to wait outside or in the car if they didn't have FOID's. How ridiculous, a man out with his family stopping by to give them business and they treat his wife and an 8 & 10 year old that way, tough guys I guess. They just lost both our business. He got in an argument with the guy and told him he would never be back. Problem is for them, the word is getting out about them and now all of our friends, most of which are firearms owners are aware, they will eventually feel it in the revenues.

Cook county does have an assault weapons ban that only applies in unincorporated Cook County and cities/towns that don't have home rule or have adopted that ordinance themselves if they do.

Long and short of it is that it's a private business on private property. They can ask you to leave for any reason or no reason. With the exception of the protected reasons (race, age, sex, sexual orientation, etc) they can also deny you service for any reason. The FFL documentation from the ATF tells them they can refuse to sell a firearm to anyone. Don't like it? Shop elsewhere.

These dealers and their businesses are under a giant microscope from the gotcha journalists and the scumbag political police leaders who send officers to do undercover work to get them on a bs paperwork beef. No thanks, I wouldn't take such risks either.

It's true-Cook County does in fact have an ordinance prohibiting the possession of certain rifles such as the AR-15. Called the Baines Law or something similar...
Ridiculous, but true.

AND starting April 1st, there will be the $25.00 tax imposed on all Cook County firearm sales.
Sadly, this will cause some to go out of business.

AND starting Aug 01, any firearms transaction by Cook County residents have to notify the Sheriff of this transaction-of course-expect a fee.

There's not enough Beat cars to cover the unincorporated areas...Court Services is understaffed and the jail...simply pathetic.

Whose going to assume this concept?

DART thinks this is gonna fly? Perhaps as soon as Toni Preckwinkle sprouts wings! Both are so hated by County Employees.
Two useless politicians...

P.S. GAT Guns isn't the answer. More thieving greedy A$$holes taking complete advantage of the firearm feeding frenzy.

P/O's-stick with O'Herron's despite the delay...just sit back and let things settle down a bit.
They've always been good to the Police.

I've never been treated nicely by any of these Gunshops on a regular basis. Feel like I'm a criminal most of the time the way I get treated, and I'm honorably retired from 35 years in Law Enf. tired of the attitudes and the 3rd Degree from a bunch of punk sidewalk commandos who never tracked down any armed felons or otherwise, but all have their nylon holsters and 20 shot Glocks, and like to talk like they're know it all, been there, done that, badasses.

I went this summer to Mega Sports looking to buy a gun.. I didn't like the little twits they have working there, and they were NOT at all helpful..(think it's because I am a girl). Finally found one at Carbella's now finding ammo and a good range is hard..I was told MEGA SPORTS had PLENTY .. but with their staff I would prefer to go somewhere else..

Rock River Arms would not ship P-mags to me last year because I'm in Cook. Their online order form asks for your county. I went to Ray O'Herron, paid a few extra dollars, and bought them with no problem.

3/21/2013 10:48:00 PM

No one will ship mags with over 12 round capacity to Chicago.

Check the city ordinance.

Fuck those "big box" stores like Bass Pro and Cabelas. Small mom and pop shops like Chuck's is the way to go. The only thing I liked about Mega Sports is their selection. The fact they treat even coppers like shitheads is why I will NEVER go back.

MaxonShooters.com in Des Plaines carries ARs and will sell to residents of Cook County. Remember that only specific types of AR and other sporting rifles are banned in Cook County. A Colt AR-15 is banned, but not a RRA LAR-15, even though they are practically identical.

They have a new facility with 20 75ft lanes.
