Rental Cars

Anyone have legit info on this rumor?
  • RENTALS

YES. I am surprised SSC has not covered this yet!

The city is so short of cars that they are handling out "rentals" to detectives and to sergeants working VRI! Chevy Impalas with NO emergency equipment.

    Typical democrat waste of money!!!

Why doesn’t the city just pay Ford for the new damn squad cars on time?

The license plates are from Indiana on these cars.

I know a dick who took out a car and went through some red light camera over 40 times just for shits and giggles. (he did not sign it out)

Hertz will be real happy when RAHM sends them the bill for the tickets!!

This city is a fucking joke.
Okay, that last part is a bit childish.  The city will just void out the tickets.  But are they actually renting cars?  And wouldn't this be a biddable contract?  Who's getting the payoffs?

Was at meeting with McCarthy. He met with a group of sergeants and explained that he wants to get back to making the department a para-military organization. That is his big picture plan.
After a little though i realized what the big plan really is about. Mayor Emanuel has a plan. Get old timers ,who cost the city more per officer, to retire. Start mass hire of new healthier lower payed officers like they did in the early 1990's. The mayor and McCarthy know that traditionally in an organization that the members who are most resistant to change are older employes who will just retire instead of change.

A friend in a small unit says he was told today he's getting rentals in exchange for the couple of unmarkeds he had to turn over to this overtime initiative. They were told the same thing about the lights/siren.
Can't wait til a couple get wrapped around trees. And if there's a mileage limit, the City's gonna get hit for all the over-miles charges. Wouldn't real police cars be cheaper?

Does Vanecko have a Hertz franchise?

Makes sense that he'd license them in Indiana-wouldn't want to have to pay all those Cook/Chicago/IL fees & taxes.

Wasn't Streets & San renting vehicles from Indiana? Wasn't that story broke here on SCC?

Back in the mid-80's there was a similar situation. We were so short of MARKED squad cars that the next batch of unmarked Chevys were given double gumball machine Mars Light bars and given to District Sergeants.

Frankly, dark solid color unmarked cars with those old fashioned light bars looked rather dashing.

They Are enterprise rentals and yes they are being given to supervisors working VRI. Detectives also are using rentals due to a shortage of vehicles but not when working VRI but actually their normal assignment. The vehicles have dash mounted light bars that are portable, but no sirens. Some cars do have out of state plates which shouldn't be used unless as a last resort. I hope the detective was joking about the red light if not I'm sure he just created a CR for all in the unit of assignment to be investigated which is totally childish and I hope he or she is identified so they can be held accountable. Unless responding to an emergency that's the only reason I could see doing something so foolish.

Someone must be reading SCC because I suggested that the city could rent cars in order to put some cops on the street quickly on an earlier thread.

So whoever rented the cars probably got the idea off of SCC's blog. Even if they didn't, it was no "original idea".

As far as biddable contract, well, you know how the city works.

So what happens when the City fails to pay the rental company for the cars? Or will the rental car copanies be paid right away to take care of the connected companies? Probably just another way to get the connected City money.

Yes, it's true. But they are leases, not rentals. And the only equipment they will have are flashing lights, no sirens, and they aren't going to VRI, they're going to the detective division. We have been warned that we are not to use these vehicles in chases, per an email we received citing a general order about such things.

They are leasing bunch of gas guzzlers VANS from enterprise through out the city.
Supposedly, we were about saving money with the GRID garbage, instead they are leasing more vehicles and wasting more GAS on the daily basis compared before GRID garbage.
I wish someone would ask SHITY-HALL...what is the monthly gas bill for S&S department and compare it prior to the GRID GARBAGE.
I bet if MIDGET Byrne was around,he would be fired along with the other clowns that pushed for the GRID.

55 million to honor a wife that was as corrupt as her husband. Look at Patty and Rod, the criminal couple. Maggie and Rich were worse, much worse.

This in not the first time this has been done, the city got was leasing cars from another company years ago, cost taxpayers big bucks when it turns out they could have just purchased the cars for a lot less money, but then, the mayor could not get the kickbacks he wanted. It was a big scandle at the time.
Aviation is another big user of lease vehicles.
At one time, the fire dept also wanted to lease some ambulances, but found out it would be twice as much in the long run.

3/02/2013 12:13:00 AM

Whether he 'earned' it or not, one lieutenant took his newly assigned (city owned) unmarked straight to his back-alley friend and installed a remote start on the car so he wouldn't have to get his toes cold in the morning. Did he get that car reassigned to the new Area when he was moved?

You mean beside the fact that it is an overall fuck you to prove mcdumass and rahms incompetence! It is one of the best forms of silent/passive prostest that could have been done. The bosses didn't think of lights, sirens, emergency response, only-go make us look good with less! Now take the time and find the car with indiana plates and tickets. Make more work for the boss. To the detetective that did this if true-do not come forward to anyone-let them find you. We can only solve 25% of crime in this city anyway- you got a 75% chance. And... That is one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. Fu_k em if they can't take a joke. Everyone loved supertroopers, why not this?

It's true in the D Unit, no cars available for the detectives to go out and conduct followup investigations even worse, go out and get lunch. Starting Sunday supervisors are to get rentals without emergency equpminent and their cars are to go to the detectives. Even with the cars being reassigned there are not enough vehicles for detectives to do their jobs. One cannot make this stuff up!

This is true for the D unit.

What if you are going to a job and there is no legal parking space in front? And illegally parked rental gets a parking ticket? what if you see a crime occur and you try to pull over a car with that starsky & hutch flashing light on the dashboard? what if gangsta sees your rental with out-of-state plates and wants to carjack an officer or detective? Will the City be held liable for damages if said detective shoots and kills the would-be carjacker, because their client didn't know he was the police in a rental car?

it is so clear that that this decision to rent cars for on-duty working police officers and detectives was not thought out completely at all. whoever made that decision clearly was never The Police.

It's getting so bad that it is sad that taxpayers money is wasted with so little thought by those controlling the money.

COBRA is federal law for uninsured. It is automatic for 60 days. No money to pay for it unless needed. You are federally covered under this at no charge unless needed. Enter the phone number in your cell and you can call them to activate on the way to the hospital if needed. CPS teachers were covered under the strike by this if the strike spilled into OCT. If you work just 1 day (1st of the month) you are covered by job insurance for that month. COBRA doesn't kick in till following month (if needed). FYI

NYC is using police cars painted up as taxis.

Maybe we'll be doing the same soon...take fares between jobs.

Do we get to keep tips?

You have no idea what you are talking about Go to the government COLA website and there is absolutely nothing about being automatic for 60 days. I just hope none believes your bullshit
