February Slayings Drop

  • After a violent start to the year for Chicago, the number of homicides plummeted in February to a level not seen in more than a decade, police statistics show.

By Thursday evening, with just hours left in the month, 14 homicides had been logged in Chicago, down from 29 in February 2012 and less than a third of the 43 killings in January.

A Tribune analysis of department statistics since 2002 showed that the previous low for a February came in 2006, when the city recorded 17 homicides. Over the past 11 years, the month has averaged just under 25 homicides, the analysis showed. A month-by-month breakdown for years before 2002 was not available Thursday
And they finally interview someone with a brain:
  • The up-and-down numbers could be due to a variety of factors, including bad weather, an increase in officers on the streets and the worldwide attention given to Chicago's epidemic of gun violence after the slaying of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, Arthur Lurigio, a Loyola University criminologist, said Thursday.

"Statistics fluctuate for a variety of reasons, but for us to be confident of crime reductions, they have to take place over the course of years," Lurigio said.
Exactly. January had the largest total in a decade. February was the lowest in 11 years. Trends are measured over the years, not month to month.

The snow and cold have been more severe this February. Rahmen Noodles and Mc501 are putting 400 extra cops on the street daily at time-and-a-half along with stripping the taxpaying parts of the city of police protection. Let's see if someone keeps McJersey away from the cameras this weekend lest he jinx the whole thing.

Plummeted? Strong word for "luck".

Which strategy will McCarthy attribute this to?

Which strategy is current?

400 is approximately the same manpower as MSF/TRU.

I wonder why burglaries and auto thefts are exploding in some of the "slower" districts that have been gutted of manpower and are left with a skeleton crew--- if your beat and rapid cars are just going to job after job it leaves little time for proactive police work--- gmac has told all the commanders of slow districts that they are not getting anything and they have to make due with what they have--- so all of our police resources are sent to fight the beast and the taxpayers are once again shorted--- concealed carry can't come soon enough--- note to all you people paying 6000 dollars a year in property taxes--- no police for you, they are all babysitting little boo so he doesn't shoot little elbow in the back of the head because he called his baby mama a hoe--- you are insignificant because you have insurance and you just have to take a hit once in awhile....

Marchs totals should be down 50-60% from last year. Last March saw a 100%+ increase on murders over 2011. McCarthy is doubling the amount of Officers working VRI in March. Come April McCarthy wants to be holding a news conference exclaiming what a great job he has done. I'm guessing we still won't get below thearch 2011 numbers for murders ( you know the year before McCarthy showed up with his plans). As always stay safe and back each other up unfortunately to the leadership of the department officers are just another piece of equipment to be used and abused not to be taken care of.

400 extra cops a day at time and a half? Hows about we hire some coppers to work everyday instead of a bunch at time and a half for a while. That sounds like a better INVESTMENT. Isn't that the word the Democrats like, investment?

So we wait until there is a crisis, to wit: We don't police these areas enough and they start killing each other. Then we run in with a boatload of coppers (at time and a half) to try to get them to stop killing each other. Does that make sense to anyone?

One month doesn't make a trend, nor does February make for a good month to base a trend off of. Historically Feb has always been the quietest month. Much of the lack of murders can be contributed to 1) lousy weather and 2) poor aim. There were a total of 63 shot in Feb but only 11 died (17.4%). They certainly tried to kill one another, but they simply weren't very successful.

Dear Ignoramus,

Our pointed commentary about homicides being up and out-of-control is a direct response to their claiming to have everything under control, that manpower isn't hideously short, that weather has nothing to do with crime, etc. We counter their bullshit with facts and experience and real-life examples. And the deliberate mischaracterization of statistical data by CompStat that feeds into the ridiculous chest-thumping by Rahm and Mc501 is called out and has been called out by our readers since they started.

The fact that someone in the establishment accurately defined what a "trend" is AND the fact that the media published it, means they are coming around to our way of thinking.

And that means We Win.

I hope I never hear anybody complain about getting time due denied. You fell into the city's trap, and there is absolutely no need to hire any new police. The district's are manned as long as time is denied. The overtime on these initiatives are peanuts compared to hiring more police. So, good luck working till your 60 yrs old, and don't ever complain again. Somehow the police always screw themselves during contract time(can't wait for that retro check I already spent,,,Must vote yes to this contract,,,even though the city won,,,ala $1 insurance premium) Stop blaming everyone else for your greed. To all those who continue to cry about TRU and MSF getting disbanded, shut the fuck up already. Listen kids, when a new unit gets started it eventually gets disbanded, I.e. you get your ass dumped to a district. However the department has always started up a new unit shortly thereafter disbanding an existing one. There used to be Task Force, then SOG then Gang Crimes then SOS then TRU and MSF. Also some units were created with the intention of replacing existing ones, dumping less clout heavy coppers and retaining heavier clout coppers. They did it when they decentralized Gang Crimes, all sent back to districts but just 100 stayed (clout heavy) to form the new SOS unit, which got expanded with coppers who came in on phone calls. However there were no replacement units when the disbanding of TRU and MSF occurred, maybe due to Rahms policy of decreasing the department numbers. So I wouldnt be surprised if in the very near future a new citywide unit is created, and when that do and that one eventually gets disbanded don't cry, this is the nature of things on this job,the nature of the beast. So be safe........

Really?. I've been in 008 and came over around the same time as cmdr kup. We were very close friends and talked and drank a lot. It's funny because although kup liked everyone he always had the same exact complaint about 008... 3rd watch and the amount of bitterness and dogs. He constantly would talk about how nothing got done by 3rd watch. Yes, he liked the people and kup would never blow up to the coppers and demand things which is what made him great... But he always would say after a shooting or if there was a robbery pattern that the tact teams incident teams or other watches would have to be depended on because 3rd watch did nothing with the exception fof maybe 3 or 4 cars. So lets not play this game. I've worked on that watch and know all of the people on that watch. There is not gonna be any huge uptick in work if there is a new boss put in. We had the best boss in the dept in kupczyk and you guys still managed to piss him off by not doing anything so I venture to say its not this boss it's the watch. Yes, he's a micro manager and freaks about shootings but a dog is a dog and 3rd watch in 008 is a kennel. Kup and I drank many nights together talking about this very same topic. Woof woof 3rd watch

McCarthy
Please do us, and yourself a favor, and GET RID of 8th district commander. He has starting nit picking every little thing and is doing it to the workers. The entire district is fed up with him. There are several stories about him and all of them result in the same outcome- he's pissing the working police in 8 off. If your goal is to lower shootings you need to switch up commanders in 8. People on the 3rd watch dislike him so much that they don't want to do anything for him. He doesn't know our names and doesn't bother. He only wants us to make him look good so that he can get promoted and what do we get for all of our hard work? No days off. Have you ever heard the saying "you get more flies with honey"? Treat the police-especially the workers because there are VERY few left in 8-with respect and we will be happy to work and get you what you need. Sure if SCC started a thread on this commander the stories about him would count in the hundreds. Get him out of 8 and ship him back to the north side. He can't handle the south side!

Don't hold your breath on that. A couple weeks ago 008 was up at Compstat and McDouche and his effeminate partner Tracey were cumming all over themselves about what a great job McNaughton is doing. He's staying. They basically told him he's doing everything right, so do more of it.

So all you people who keep lying to yourselves and to others about McCarthy leaving can maybe face the facts that this guy is NOT going anywhere!! Get used to this system it will be around for a while!

3/01/2013 01:10:00 AM

As someone who has been around a long time and now happily retired, I have gone through my share of police superintendents. I left before Weiss so all of my experiences have been with insiders. I can honestly say that only Rochford, OGrady and Rice were worth a shit. The rest of them did not car about you and sold their soul to city hall. Promotions used to be sold in the alderman office or from members of the old civil service commission. Transfers to good units were impossible unless you had some real clout. And this my friends went on through the administration of Hillard and Kline. The phony merit selection system, uneven and disparate discipline system, just about everything rigged or influenced. Complain? OK, but you will on the shit list forever or as they used to say " You have a brick on you"Our command staff? When they would testify at depositions or hearings they would lie their ass off to your face. Not very inspiring. Yes, I made some rank but it took a long time and a hell of of a lot of hard work while others just sailed past me. If McCarthy is reasonably fair then I just would not wish for him to go so fast. When he goes you will get an insider no doubt and that is truly a roll of the dice. And I have never seen an original thought come out of the head of one our insider leaders. I cant think of one who went on to success in anything other then another clouted government job.

So they just set up VRI offices in 011 with a full time staff. Supposedly there is another one on the south side. Are we so bad off that we need VRI permanently functioning? We must be at dangerously low levels of PO's on the street. Not that it matters, since we don't have cars for the PO's working now.

Exactly. January had the largest total in a decade. February was the lowest in 11 years. Trends are measured over the years, not month to month.

well scc, to be fair then you must abide by that same thinking. I can probably find more than a few postings by yourself who blast the supt after a month of high homicides. Im not taking sides at all, im a blue shirt out doing the same as you however to be fair is fair. If your gonna hold the media and supt to not calling it a trend then all of your yelling and screaming since gmac has been here has to be thrown out. its measured in years not months as the article and now as YOU state. so, we will be watching in the future, hopefully none of your posts will be hypocritical scc.

3/01/2013 01:58:00 AM

-----------------------------------

I think that if one was to do a 12 month moving average that you'll find that trend has been up though.

Just remember one thing.

This is the Super that took cops off the street that helped to create the crisis that he could use.

Now after telling us all time and again that more cops on the streets are not the answer -- now after putting over 400 more cops on the streets he's a hero??
