Move the CTA Crime Around

  • The five-month reconstruction of the CTA Red Line promises to redirect a tidal wave of riders from the city’s No. 1 line for station crime to its No. 2 one.

In fact, three of the four South Side Red Line stops that will feed passengers by free shuttle into the Green Line during the massive track rebuilding project were among the top 10 in station crime last year.

  • Come mid-May, passengers at the four southernmost Red Line stops will be offered free shuttle buses to the Green Line’s Garfield station. Riders at other affected stops can take existing bus routes with discounted fares and more frequent runs.

[...] Some wonder whether the Green Line is due for an onslaught of redirected Red Line crime — especially at the Garfield/55th Street station. Will free shuttles and free train rides attract those with crime on their minds?
The short answer is "yes."

By a strange coincidence, the long answer is "yes," too.

Like we said, it's a slow news day.

Let's see how they deal with a recruit with 2 days on the job telling her FTO with 20+ years how to handle a call...

What a sad commentary on the 20-somethings coming onto this department. The entitlement, know-it-all generation. It's only going to get worse; you can see it on the streets: a slow denigration of American society.

Time for the white shirts to step up in 006; don't bend to the generation that thinks they are entitled. Entitled to a star and a gun? No, I think not. A recruit with zero time on the job. Wow.

Get rid of her. Too hard? Retread. Retrain. Whatever. Give her a healthy dose of humble. When I came on I kept my mouth shut, tried to learn, and trust me, had some weird FTOs and of course, "acting FTOs".

In summary, stay the hell away from the FTO test.

Experiment indeed... I'm really looking forward to this. We all know that the Crime Line is the main feeder ramp into downtown for South Side Honor Students. It's also the main conduit into the North Side neighborhoods for all those early morning robberies around Fullerton, Diversey and Belmot.

The differences in crime stats will likely be way outside any sort of statistical noise area. The we can all watch and laugh at the excuses that are thrown about.

Funny you should mention that. We have some privates in the Army here in Afghanistan who feel the same way. 1 year in the army and they should be able to tell an E7 how things should be run.

They don't think they should have to follow orders that aren't "fair" Everything is about THEM and thier morale.

Sad thing is, that line of thinking has infected at least some of the senior leadership as well, as they have tended to mollycoddle these soldiers, especially the females.

21 years in the military, and I have never been so disgusted with the way things are going.

Ok dick head, you want to explain to me how it's the "white shirts" fault that this recruit 2 days out of the academy is giving a 20 year vet a problem?? How in the world does that fall on the "white shirts?"

You are just a wheezily little spineless prick that want to blame the "white shirts" when anything at all goes wrong. Guess what FNG, when we had a problem recruit... we dealt with him/her. We didn't need to run like a little whiney kid to the "white shirt" every time we had a recruit that thought they were a hot shot. There are definitely ways to deal with this recruit on the "blue shirt" level. But, you are too much of a spineless bitch to take care of anything yourself.

2 more points:
1) maybe it's possible the 20 year vet didn't know something or was doing something the wrong way and the new recruit fresh out of the academy with all the newest laws and procedures in her head did it the right way?
2) what does this say about the 20 year vet that is getting run over by a brand new recruit? To me you just threw him under the bus b/c right away i think that person must not be a strong leader/ policeman if he can't control or lead a brand new recruit.

The lack of easy access to the downtown area on the red line will make for an interesting study of crime statistics once the work begins. I expect crime will drop in a big way in the loop once the project starts, as the predators won't have their usual mode of transportation to the downtown area where their preferred victims are. I really hope someone will be keeping track of the stats.

Related to South Side mayhem ...

I'm doubt too much SCC readership overlaps with fans of NPR "This American Life," but I highly recommend checking out their two-part episode documenting a turbulent several months at Harper High School in Englewood.

Ho-ly shit. On one hand it makes you sad to think these kids never had a shot thanks to shitty parenting (family involvement is barely mentioned) and poor role models at school (the CPS "educators" can hardly speak a sentence of functional English). On the more predictable other hand, it makes you outraged to see how the thugs' behavior is accepted and accommodated far more than it's discouraged or punished. Make no mistake: nearly every administrative decision is guided by what action the gangbanger shitheads take or might decide to take. There can't possibly be a free moment to maintain a semblance of classroom instruction at this place but, really, why bother? The upperclass students they interview are barely coherent and clearly ill-prepared for even the most menial jobs or college (Malcolm X and Harold Washington excepted, of course). Despite this, they’re all praised and thanked profusely for semi-accomplishing the most basic tasks.

It’s far from uplifting, but it gives the most cynical among us some confidence in proclaiming what should have been obvious to everyone for decades: there is NO hope for these areas without a major political and community housecleaning.

Stream or download the shows while they’re still free!

SCC.... Ya know I have lived in this era of do more with less way to long now. Now explain to me how a beat Cop is supposed to do contact cards on a PDT that has minimal or NO cell tower connections most of the time? Or how a Beat Cop can finish a report in a timely manner when they cant get their PDT to connect. You do the report on scene then have to relocate back to the station because the PDT won't connect. A report that should only take a matter of minutes takes an hour. DUMB!!! And when the PDT finally connects finally does... It takes up to 5 minutes for it to switch screens. DUMB!!

Nothing this department does sets a Police Officer up to be successfull. I mean they toss a MILLION DOLLARS at a bunch of pimp reverends and they cant even keep the STATION COMPUTERS RUNNING.

Crappy Dell computers running windows XP and a host of other departmental stuff that eats up those outdated computers power rediculously. I mean how does anybody expect an old computer to run new technology on 512 MB of RAM? Its takes up to 5 minutes for the damn thing to boot up. Yet a MILLION DOLLARS is tossed at a bunch a PIMP REVERENDS. Here's a hint... Try installing 4 gigs a ram in those outdated computers. XP will only use 3.25 Gigs a ram but it will make the station computers 5 times faster. All this city wants is Parkers, Movers, & Contact cards. Well for Pete's sake why not at least give us the tools to deliver????

I honestly cringe when I have to make anarrest because the station which has the heat on HELL... also has a bunch of computers that are basically useless. I was 10 times faster on paper. Just my 2 cents.

The job of a FTO is to guide and correct the behaviors of recruits, not complain. Recruits are not perfect when leaving the academy. Provide the guidance and correct mistakes instead of bitching and complaining. You should avoid the FTO test and let qualified officers apply for the position.

My niece is the mother of one of those whiners. She pitches an over-the-top fit if he doesn't email her every day and contacted his commanding officer when she didn't hear from the kid for two whole days!! I'm not sure what the hell is going on with the military these days, but insisting on constant contact with mommy can't be good for discipline or objective behavior in warfare.
By the way, thank you so much for your service. We're all the police; you're just doing it on a global, far more dangerous, level.

Contrast NYC

NYPD murders down 33% this year so far. That is on top of their best year ever in 2012 with only 414 murders.

From NY Post.

Remember, NYC is Compstat land. Who could believe their stats?

Just like here.

Tribune the fortune teller?

In today's on line breaking news in the trib they had the story on how the new Madigan concealed carry bill will not permit concealed carry on public transportation (and most anywhere else), and right next to it was the story on how 3 south side female dogs beat and robbed a woman in the near north area. I BET THEY RODE PUBLIC TRANS TO HUNT THEIR PREY. They should post new signs on the CTA, a sheep with gun free zone stamped on it. It is all a conspiracy, provide them with entitlements and plenty of unarmed game to hunt for that democratic vote, Feed that lion so he don't eat you! Beelzebub has a Devil put aside for you Mr. Madigan.

Had a little girl in 019 that gets a bid spot through an old timer. The old timer is a wagon guy so he'd want nothing to do w/that creepy desk. This was done to keep those w/seniority off the desk and the real C/O of 019(MBS)in charge of the watch. The little girl has max 5 years on the job and was overheard saying that she should have a different furlough pick cuz she works the desk w/MBS. They want days, summer furloughs, off the street entirely, and many other entitled benefits. Eli is getting jackhammered at the SS meetings cuz his X/O(we all know the douche)is screwing him using MBS to put the wrong people on the worst beat. This beat is a constant topic of discussion for Eli during C-stat. I have almost 15 years on and U realize U don't know a lot or rather U could know a lot more. These peeps that have yet to receive their 5 year raise have big mouths and don't want to work the street. Law Enforcement is done on the street, not watching movies on the desk.

Life is so hard 019. That "worst beat" must be a killer.

Stop whining and make money tags.. And you don't know any players in 008. Go back to pretending to do police work with your daily hype sandbag arrests. Far from doing police work

You must be talking about the Royal Eddie Winters from the DOC. Yes, he is special and believe me this will not be his first or last meritorious promotion.

Hearing rumors of a lot of complaining about the white shirts in 006...

Just letting you know, just because you have "time" on the job doesn't make you an all around genius. Our job is not that difficult. But a lot of times people like you act like it is brain surgery. Sometimes a person with 20 years on the job doing cross word puzzles can be wrong just like someone who has three days on the job. Now go back and brag to everyone how you have so many years on the job.

And as usual, The Police will be blamed for it.

That lying little twerp Moreno had nothing to do with CCSO taking over 013's old building. Find me one news article or press release where it says he was working on it.

The Sheriff's Office approached CPD about taking over the building when it was decided to close it.

Don't ever believe an alderman.

It is so obvious that you have little time on the job and this is coming from someone else that does. You're right, there were a few times my FTO did something I didn't respect or understand. A good friend of mine with 20 years on gave me great advice: shut up. I'm not there to evaluate their training skills. I shut up and my how time flew. You can't learn even the small tidbits when you're busy talking about what you think. Respect the vets and stay in your lane..stop making us look bad.

Truer words were never spoken. I know some po's that came on the job knowing nothing and 20 years later they still no nothing and the opposite is also true. Some recruits, months out of the academy know more than the FTO they are being trained by
