Police Shooting in 011
- One man was wounded by police after he pointed a shotgun at officers from his car in the East Garfield Park neighborhood this morning, officials said.
No police officers were injured and the man, 30, who was holding a sawed-off shotgun when police fired at him, was shot in the arm, according to a news release from police and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 spokesman Patrick Camden.
Harrison District officers were called to the area around Franklin Boulevard and Central Park Avenue in East Garfield Park about 4:30 a.m. after receiving a call about shots fired, police said in the statement. Once they arrived, a witness pointed at a car, saying that the man inside the vehicle had a "big" gun, Camden said. The car was headed north on Central Park, and police activated their emergency lights and sirens and followed the car, according to police.
Police pulled the vehicle over on Central Park just south of Chicago Avenue and two officers, with guns drawn, approached the vehicle, demanding to see the man's hands, Camden said. The man, who was hunched over the car's steering wheel, did not comply, and the officer on the passenger side shined a light into the vehicle.
The driver then straightened up and pointed the sawed-off shotgun at the officer on the passenger side, Camden said. The officer, fearing for his life, fired twice, he said. The officer shot the man in the arm, police said.
Nice job.

Glad the officers are safe at home. Stay safe everyone!
I was at the academy last week and can anybody tell me why somebody on this police department has straight days and every Friday and Saturday off? It's ridiculous with all the mayhem that happens every weekend that people have shifts like that. Clean out that academy and every other unit where people are off Friday and Saturday. Every department can function with officers working at least one of those days on the streets. Start with the academy. It's really insane!
More range time. Point a weapon at a police officer and you get a toe tag and a one way ticket to the morgue.
Nice save officers. Keep up the good work!
As soon as you can: Buy, qualify with and carry either a .45 or a .40. Our 9mm loads aren't worth shit and it was proven again in this incident.
Brothers/Sisters in Blue, stay safe and go home to your families. May God put a hedge of protection around us all. God Bless You.- Your sister in BLUE
Nice work, Po-po
Too bad, Mo-fo
its all in shot placement dick wads. No matter what you use striking a man with 9mm or 45 in the arm even with a 50cal won't make a difference. Don't be a Monday morning cowboy. Upper chest cavity by sternum just an inch or so to the right perfectible or the inverted triangle in the face!
Off topic: congratulations to everybody from the class of 03-03 on our ten anniversary. And never forget our classmate and brother Clifton P. Lewis #4103 EOW 29DEC11
Rest easy brother, we've got it covered down here.
I love having weekends off at the Academy.

______
Actually the 9mm rounds that the department issues is one of the best 9mm rounds available. It is light years ahead of the Speer sub sonic crap we were forced to carry before. A 45 is definitely a heavy hitter but many pros and cons to both calibers. It comes down to shot placement and training. And since our department gives us zero firearms training it falls upon ourselves to make sure we are properly trained. Spend one VRI check and get some training, swing out to the Hollow Training center and take a course. It is a hike but well worth it. What is your life worth? Of course the dogasses would never even repsond to a call like this so they don't have to worry, but alas that is another subject all together. Stay safe.
OT: Read column on front page of Tribune today. That shortshank fool is A TOTAL PIECE OF SHIT! Anyone who believes his nonsense is as dumb as a rock. He knows he will burn in hell for eternity. A thievin kniving MF who will do anything. Buh Bye Rich as your fellow gym people call you. SHORTSHANKS-Fuck U AND your Family. Doesnt want to talk about Vanecko? One of top 10 influencial lawyers in America? This fuck couldn't pass the bar exam after 3 times? Needed help? My dog could pass it on the third time.

I could understand your gripe if the academy wasn't being used for classes, but it's fully engaged with classes right now.
Sometimes you just stop shooting I guess.
We need to change the training module.... these kids need to learn to count their rounds and fire till the threat no longer moves.
I wonder if this is the same crew that was robbing people in 11, Friday Night, Heard a call of a Nissan Armada robbing people and one offender had a shotgun, they gave out the plate and good description, supposedlythe victm has cameras on his house. Hope it was the crew. and I'm glad the police are fine.
1151 am, you are a real jealous douchebag, aren't you?
At that close range, dude should be dead. However, glad the PO is ok. Now all we have to do is wait for shitbird's momma to post the proverbial 8th grade graduation picture and start screaming, "My baby was framed! He was fixin' to think about going back to school to get his GED!"

A shot to a non-vital center area like the arm is unlikely to be a lethal shot regardless of whether a 9mm, .40, or .45 is used.
If a bullet passes through the arm or gets re-directed in such a way as to strike a vital center area afterwards, then caliber might make a difference, but that's a pretty big if.
At the end of the day, shot placement is the most important factor.

Maybe we should close the academy one day a week so staff can work on the street! But unfortunately, the academy has 500 recruits. Any other ideas asshat?
At least with a .45 or a .40 dickhead would have known he was shot-even in the arm, instead of us finding it out at th station.
A large bullet will fuck you up, even if it wasn't a chest shot
To the guy who referred to us as the PO-PO, have some respect for your fellow officers.
Joe Biden told citizens that shotguns were OK.
Oh for the love of God. Enough already with these monsters. Take the empty schools, turn them into jails and stack em in there like sardines.
Everyone needs to stop being Monday night quarterbacks. If you weren't their then you don't talk. The po did a great job shit yes will live but that is how the cookie crumples.
So where does it say that the academy has to run Mon-Fri w/ Sat & SUn off? Why not WEd - Sun w/Mon & Tues off? Or another combination? If officers have rotating days/hours, why can't the academy work the same way? Get the PPOs used to it?
OT: Off Duty P.O. did a great job in 012 tonight. Truly heroic work officer, God bless you.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
So then why in the hell in this big City Dept. that leads the nation in homicides ....why can't even a Sergeant take out a shotgun for his tour?
We were all shotgun trained at one time or another but taking out a shotgun is not allowed and if you inquire they think your nuts.
Glad they just gather dust in the racks.
I believe its important to have at least one carbine out in one car on each watch and at least one shotgun too !!
3 bars
To the up tight poster complaining about us PO POs in 011 lighten up francis..stop by anytime.RR..good job bro..home safe..
Good job by the officers involved. I am thankful you went home unharmed to your loved ones.
On a side note the 2nd watch LT showed up late to work again, didn't call to say he was running late. He just showed up at 0630 because he is the LT. Must be nice to show up whenever you feel like it.
Why dey gotta do him like that? They shot him down like a dog and den put dat gun on him

Sir, if you make a big enough hole, it doesn't matter where you hit him. That's why I recconend using deer slugs or an elephant gun.

Lighten up, Francis
The issue with the Academy is not the Weekends off, but rather how officers who have virtually No Street creds end up as instructors for the rest of their careers because they got there in the first place on a phone call! Once in place these instructors become tools and fools for whomever is in power towing the Party line to maintain their weekend off spots. Sometimes at the expense of the quality of training for the recruits.
good job, a great job would be a toe tag with one to the head, yes maybe it is time to bring back a few shotguns, after all if it's good enough for Joe Bitme it ought to be good enough for the C.P.D.

It's not the gun or caliber my friend. It's the man behind the gun. An old west example is Wild Bill Hickok who carried a .36 caliber cap & ball in the days of the .45 peacemaker. No one wanted to face him and he was deadly with that medium caliber. Why? Because he practiced EVERY DAY with it.

asshole stop Monday morning quarterbacking. its obvious from your rhetoric that you have never been involved in situations like this. adrenaline and stress take over and if you place the shot before they do, that's a victory in itself. I was there I and the officer did a great job with what view and opportunity he had. we went home that's all that matters. you, asshole, probably are still misfiring with snap caps. come around 011 to the wild side and see if you can stand being in hells kitchen for a while. I bet youll do a jody weiz "gotta run". once again im proud of all those from 011 that showed up and I call cowards to those were able but didn't, you know who you are. and to the "legend" coming all the way from the south end,, I was very impressed, thanks, to the seasoned officers that were there, the best sergeants and skipper our LT, what a great job by all. we all know who has our back and its nice to see that they were all there. Jmack I know youre pissed bc u on furlo, but it will still be here when you get back, PS you don't need another, RR you got the asshole and his in custody and that's all that matters. better dead but at least hes in custody.Summer is here boys and girls.

You STILL sound like a whiny baby. There's no point to it, that's why.
The academy is full. The instructors would not be available to work weekends (your original beef) and help cover the busy weekend tours BECAUSE THEY ARE busy TEACHING. If the academy was 'open' on the weekends, the instructors would not be available to hit the streets; they would still be in the academy, teaching.
So, your time due was denied and you're mad that the academy staff has weekends off. Get OVER it.
Keep the academy instructors in the academy. We need policemen out there. Not teachers.
Practice, practice and practice some more with your draw until it becomes as normal as breathing. Your conscious mind may be going haywire and your fine motor control gone, but your roscoe will be out, up and at your NPA.
011 district ain't hells kitchen. Get over yourself stroke. Try ur ass working on the south side. It makes 011 look like Naperville.
4:28 PM
Got the testosterone flowing, eh?
Historically since the 1960's, 011 has always been among the worst violent crime districts per capita in the entire nation. Don't you ever forget it.
Take your pissing contest elsewhere, "stroke".
