Officer Shot - Accidently

  • An on-duty Chicago police officer sustained a gunshot wound Monday night in the Englewood neighborhood, authorities said.

The officer is expected to survive, Chicago Police Department News Affairs [...] said.

The shooting happened about 9:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 72nd Place, authorities said.

According to a law enforcement source, an officer's weapon discharged as a dog was charging at police.
The weapon didn't discharge. It was discharged by an officer pulling the trigger. Let's not pretend guns have a mind of their own. If it was an accident, 'fess up, say it was an accident.

Initial reports have the officer in serious, but stable condition. No word on long-term recovery. Best wishes to the Officers involved.

How about if you and all the monday morning quarterbacks keep your comments to yourselves?

I gotta tell you, SCC, you're way out of line on this one. You're no better than the mainstream media when you publish supposition and conjecture that can only hurt the involved officer or at the very least make him look like a fool.

Shit happens fast in 007. You have to react in a split second and live with the consequences. I'm sure the officer feels badly enough without you piling on.

In a previous post someone suggested we attend traffic court to support the Officers who issued the citation to the asshole Alderman. That is an excellent idea. Especially if he did in fact obtain a cr# against the Officers. The media should also be notified. If we can get something going, you can count me in!

Not an accidental discharge-negligent discharge. Every time that gun is fired, it takes a conscious effort to pull that trigger back. It's not like we carry cocked and locked 1911's out there. It happens, so there is no shame in it, but tell it like it is. Hope the PO heals quick and everyone learns from the incident.

Let's get the terminology right. The proper term for this is not accidental discharge, it is more proper to call it an unintentional discharge. Yes the trigger had to have been pulled but the officer didn't intend to shoot him or herself.

All the supposition and conjecture came from the media report that we referenced. The fact is weapons don't "discharge" on their own and the media giving the gun this ability contributes directly to the ignorance about guns that abets the liberal agenda of banning them.

If pointing out that single fact is "piling on," then we're guilty. However if educating the readers, many of whom aren't the police, was our goal, then we accomplished that. You'll notice we wished both Officers well - shit happens. You admit it and you move on - something this Department has had difficulty with in the past.

And spare us the 007 chest beating. We served there and elsewhere during our careers and there aren't many finer cops around. But it isn't unique and it isn't an excuse.

How does an accidential shooting turn into an unintentional discharge???? When coppers start monday morning quarterbacking, that's how. The dog charged, the officer drew his gun and shot at at the threat. Did he hit the threat?? We don't know and for all we know he nuetralized the threat. The unfortunate part for the officer is that his partner was unintentionally wounded during the gunfire. No Recklessness involved here, good instincts on the part of the officer and a good learing experience for both officers. Nothing more nothing less. To the officer who discharged his weapon thanks for doing what you were trained to do and to both officers a speedy recovery.

I've seen coppers spooked which caused an accidental discharge. It happens. Main thing to remember if you are carrying a Glock, Springfield XD or the S&W MP, the trigger pull is nothing. The accidental discharges I have seen have been with revolvers, DA Semi Autos and striker fired pistols. It has happened many times in the past. It is never intentional. I feel sorry for both officers. The one who fired has to feel like shit. Best thing to try and do is what we have always been taught. Try to keep your finger off the trigger unless you are almost 100 percent positive you are going to pull the trigger. I have to say I didn't always take my own advice. But after I started carrying a Glock, I made sure I was ready but my finger was off the trigger unless I felt I was in imminent danger. I was in situations and one thing I have learned is not to make any judgement unless you were there. No 2 situations are alike. Remember when you pull the trigger, even intentionally, tunnel vision sets in.

This department has it's head up it's ass. First off for how many years in the academy they preach about anything you do will get you sued and/or fired. Second, even after your FTO training, your first year is all learning. Hell we learn something new during our whole career. As my FTO said, when you think you know everything about the job, quit, because you are full of shit. How true. The idiots who came up with the idea to put PPO's on foot patrol in the worst shit neighborhoods should have their heads examined and a foot up their ass. All they are doing is setting up a bad situation where one of these green officers is going to get hurt or killed. Instincts build in your first year. They teach you basics in the academy, but the rest is learned on the street by working with coppers who have been in multiple situations and have built up instincts by learning how people act when all hell is going to break loose. Can't blame them, blame the asinine bosses. We were all new once. How quickly we learned the academy really didn't teach us shit outside the basics.

SCC, you laid the facts out as told. We all have been in a situation like that or heard of one. 007 is a great district to work and has some very good coppers there. But so do most other districts now of days. I've worked with some great cops all over the city. Many districts like 10, 11,005, 003, 006 and others are just as busy. Maybe 25 years ago there were slow districts, but that isn't the case today. As far as the shooting, whether it was an accidental discharge or the PO got tunnel vision, doesn't matter. Shit happens quickly. Much quicker than a split second. Never second guess. One thing we all should remember is every one of us is human. Mistakes happen, have happened in the past and will happen again. We don't have the luxury of taking time to think things out before they happen. So sometimes shit happens. I almost broke my partners arm wailing on a guy we were trying to get a gun off of with my maglite. Tunnel vision. If you want to arm chair quarterback. Do it for yourself. Every other situation, leave it alone.

Hope the officer is ok, but know what you are shooting at and know when to pull the trigger. Back in 1997 there was an idiot in 020 cleaning his gun in the locker room and discharged his weapon. The round flew around in the little locker room bouncing around. He is lucky he only shot himself in the hand and didn't kill someone.

I will say hope the officer is ok and now go to the range and practice practice practice.

No go ahead and flame me for my opinion. I bet you you would say the same thing if that round was coming towards you.

Unintentional discharge???? It takes a trigger pull to fire a weapon, question is weather it was intended or an "oops" reflex. Just like when the brain trusts in 019, exexcuted the roll call room floor. These officers ( resource team officers) are dumb and dumber. The first mental giant unloads his weapon and gives it to the other knucklehead who pulls the trigger and shoots the floor while the round hits Jeff with a G in the leg. Talk about the three stooges. But then the XO comes to roll call that week to tell the troops to not give these officers any shit for what happened since this happens all the time. Oh and they are still on quality of life cars which are now called resource teams, soon to be renamed I'm sure......

By the rules of shooting, that would be a problem too. Not sure why the officers are approaching the dog from both sides, but I won't judge. However as one of the basic rules of shooting you need to know your background behind your target. Essentially that is shooting at another police officer. I won't judge I wasn't there, however trying to move a step or 2 to one side or the other might have prevented this if that was the case.

Oh and for the hero at 06:51, things happen fast anywhere at anytime. Save the 007th Dist. Ranger bullshit.

Similar incident when I was new on the job. Copper was on the porch, my partner and I walking up to assist him, we were separated by a cyclone fence. Owner let pit bull out the back door it charged the officer on the porch, he let a few rounds off, we happened to be in the crossfire. The dog ran off uninjured, my partner and I just missed catching a round. What I can say is that the officer on the porch was trapped and had no choice, I didn't fault him then and I don't fault him now. I'm grateful it worked out that day
I guess what I would add, is that if you weren't there, in this latest incident maybe we could cut the officer some slack. I can't imagine how bad they feel, let's be grateful the outcome wasn't worse.

Shit happens. Monday morning quarterbacking isn't gonna change that. No matter how much we try to do things right- reality sometimes gets in the way. Not the first time an officer was accidentally shot by another officer and it surely won't be the last- but it is a rare event considering the big picture.
Also- if you weren't there- it's not appropriate to judge the actions of the officers.
Wish them well, be glad they will survive , learn from it and move on.

Fido has already purchased a lifetime supply of Alpo and has weekly visits to the animal shelter lined up for his choice of the latest "poon-tang".
