Brave Child Passes

Back on 09 May, we wrote about the CPD Mounted Unit fulfilling the wish of a child. She is the child of a CPD sergeant and her story touched many.

Her mother wrote to us -  Kira lost her battle Wednesday:
  • Kira Mammoser, a 9-year-old girl who captured public attention this month when she received a surprise visit from two police horses, has lost her battle with an extremely rare disease, her family said Thursday.

She died about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, surrounded by family and friends in her room at Advocate Children's Hospital Park Ridge, said her father, Chuck Mammoser.

"Kira was awake," Mammoser said. "She was able to say goodbye to everybody — hugs and kisses."
Arrangements are posted at this link here. Our deepest sympathies to her extended family and again, thanks to the Mounted Unit for bringing her happiness during a difficult journey.

There is a poetry selection on the Memorial Page linked above. We don't know who selected it, but assume that it had meaning to Kira and her family. We share it here:
  • You cannot choose your battlefield,
    God does that for you;
But you can plant a standard
    Where a standard never flew
    By: Nathalia Crane 1926
Godspeed Kira.

To the members of the CPD, we thank you for your many kindnesses, for your support, and for the love you have shown for our granddaughter Kira. The few minutes she was able to spend with the Mounted Unit were among the happiest of her last few days with us. Please hug your children and grandchildren for us, and stay safe for them. With great thankfulness and deep respect for all CPD officers - Bill and Pat Ruting, Kira's grandparents.

So sorry to hear this. God bless this girl. It angers me so much that a girl like this that is so loved by her family is taken away so early, then you have kids running around this city that the parents are nowhere to be found and grow up to be gangbangers, leaches, or a detriment to society.

Angels

by Unknown Author

The sky is filled with Angels
With puffy lacy wings
The remnants of God's beauty
With treasures they now bring

Each one of them a Guardian
That travels in the sky
To watch throughout eternity
Their parents from on high

Smiles that come from Angels
They fall like crystal rain
Eases earthly burdens
Lifting all life's pain

Halos so astounding
That glitter gold each day
Following their loved ones
In such a perfect way

Wings in gentle breezes
That fall from up above
Kissing every parent
With everlasting love

Angels soar through heaven
With everlasting light
Looking down from heaven
Saying their "goodnights"

Kissing all who loved them
So gently on the face
This life's tender mercy
Each parent can embrace

Wings and shiny halos
Travel from on high
Surrounding all their loved ones
They never say good-bye.

RIP Kira.

SCC,
Thank you for sharing my daughter's story, not once, but twice. Kira was a fantastic kid who possessed unbelievable strength, both physical and emotional. She was diagnosed with ROHHAD when she was 6 and fought her condition for almost 4 years. Kira was 9 years, 9 months, and 18 days old when she passed away last week. Kira was fully aware of what was happening as her time grew near. Her hospital room was filled with people she loved and she was able to say goodbye to each and give everyone hugs and kisses. She was not in pain, as that was part of her condition. Most importantly, she was not afraid of dying. Kira had coded numerous times in the last couple of years, being revived each time. We had spent many nights together talking abut life, death, and the after-life. She had been to Heaven's gates before and she knew when it was time, to step through the darkness into the light of Heaven. When it was time, she went to sleep and peacefully passed away in the arms of her family. Kira planted her standard here on earth and her spirit lives on. My family owes a huge thank you to Father Brandt and Chaplain Kim Lewis-Davis of the CPD Chaplains Ministry, the CPD Mounted Unit, CPD EAP, and the CPD Memorial Foundation for all their support during this difficult time. There was also a huge out pouring of support from individual members and retirees of the CPD. We could never thank them enough.
Chuck Mammoser
